Martial Arts/Sports: Muay Thai

How did you get into the sport?

I was diagnosed with a autoimmune disease called Ankylosing spondylitis and my doctor told me i had to become physically active. So instead of going to the gym, I chose to start Muay Thai.

What are your immediate training goals?

Become more flexible and fit.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I really like that they make it so welcoming for people of all levels of experience.

What is your favorite move?

Question mark kick.

Favorite workout/walkout song?

I’ll whip ya head boy – 50 cent.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I play in a punk band called “Yeah Don’t Care”, that is really the most fun and exciting part of my life but I do also love to skateboard and dominate people in World of Warcraft.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I am originally from the Sunshine Coast (Queensland) and I moved to Melbourne to follow my passion for music. While growing up I spent a lot of my time skateboarding, surfing and playing music.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I have every dietary requirement under the sun, so I mainly eat at home but for when I do eat out, it would be a veggie laksa from Viet Rose on Brunswick street in Fitzroy.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Don’t be shy, everybody starts somewhere.

‘It’s been great seeing Josh go from a complete beginner and looking like a fish out of water at the gym, to being one of the guys in the class who looks out for the new kid, and looks at home in the gym – still in his leather jacket, but at home none the less.’- Oliver Smith
