MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: WILHELM SISOUW

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Wilhelm Sisouw, a graduate Architect who proved himself in the ring earlier this year in April at the Stan The Man Cup 7 “Quest for Greatness” in Blackburn. When he’s not designing buildings of the future, Will can be found working hard in the gym and is a familiar face in our CBD Fight Team sparring classes. Read on to find out more about Will!

Martial Arts/Sports: MMA, Basketball, Golf & Surfing.

How did you get into the sport?

Watching too much UFC and a desire to learn self defence led me to my first class.

What are your immediate training goals?

Keep a level fitness and sparring ability.

What are your goals for the next five years?

I like to do dabble in a fight possibly once a year. I want to keep a steady incline of fitness and technique.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The culture! Anyone of any experience can train together, as there’s no ego.

What is your favourite move?

Toss up between an overhand right, body rip and a question mark kick.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Don’t sweat the technique – Eric B & Rakim.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Yoga, surfing & golf. Getaway weekend trips are a must for relaxation.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Melbourne born and bred. My parents originally came from Sri Lanka with little money. They never forget to remind my brothers and I of how lucky we are (haha). Going back to Sri Lanka from time to time helps to ground you on your roots and heritage.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Will Smith, Tony Robbins, Kobe Bryant, Quentin Tarantino. These are all people who are extremely passionate and dedicated to their crafts. Will Smith & Tony Robbins especially, as I’m trying to learn the importance of mental belief and self manifestation, whilst spreading positivity to those around me.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Almost impossible to answer. My weekly diet consists of Rice and Curry, Pho, Ramen, Hot Pot and Lamb Ragu. I would have to give you my top 10 at best.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Focus on the basics and stop trying to be a Mortal Combat Fighter. Also to breathe and relax!

“It’s always good to catch Will for training in the mornings, thanks for the helpful sessions. Hopefully see you back in action to kick some ass.”- Joseph Choundary

“Great bloke to train and have a yarn with, CBD misses you!”- Fei Yen
