THE CLASSES

A typical class will start with 10 to 15 minutes of warm ups involving skipping, plyometrics and conditioning followed by a few rounds of shadow boxing.

Following the warm-up, your coach will develop your skills and fitness primarily on pads and with partner drills which create a realistic offense/defense situation. The content of the class will vary from week to week, keeping the class fresh and focusing on all aspects of kickboxing.

In Advanced and Sparring classes, you will have the opportunity to apply what you have learned with live sparring. The objective with sparring is to test your skills, to attempt to apply what you have learned in the class and to have some fun – it is not to hurt each other.

In an addition to the Dutch Style Muay Thai classes, we also recommend the checking out the traditional Muay Thai and Boxing classes for a truly well-rounded striking game!

If you have any questions not answered below, please feel free to give us a call on (03)9663-9122.

Q: What is the difference between Traditional Muay Thai and Dutch Style Muay Thai?

A: In traditional Muay Thai points are scored according to clean strikes; punches, kicks, elbows, knees and sweeps. Kicks, knees, sweeps, and a dominant clinch score more points than a clean punch, unless the punch results in a knockdown or does visible damage. Dutch Style Muay Thai, made famous due to its domination of kickboxing promotions such as K-1 and Glory, has much more of an emphasis on punching and combinations. Many major kickboxing promotions do not allow excessive clinching, elbows and may restrict knees and sweeps.

Q: Do I need any experience to join these classes?

A: From your first step onto the training mats, we'll walk you through all of the fundamental techniques, drills and concepts. Although our Dutch Style Muay Thai classes are not specifically targeted at beginners, they are certainly accessible. If you are feeling apprehensive about jumping in to these classes we can recommend trying out Muay Thai Fundamentals or Introduction classes first but in our experience, most people will be up to speed after the first couple training sessions.

Q: When can I start training?

A: You can start now! There is no set start date for our classes. We rotate through a syllabus, allowing you to start at any time.

Q: Do I need to be fit to start?

A: No, you don't need to be fit to start. In fact, in the beginning we expect most people to have trouble keeping up! Muay Thai is a physically demanding sport! Over the first couple of weeks though your body will adapt to the training and you'll quickly feel yourself becoming fitter and stronger. If you have health or injury concerns, please consult your doctor.

Q: Can I join this program by myself? Do I need a training partner?

A: You'll find lots of friendly training partners in the gym! The social atmosphere of the gym is one of the best aspects of training so you can be sure that you'll meet lots of new friends as well as training partners. Of course, you can join with a friend if you like, but it's not required.

Q: Do I need any equipment?

A: In terms of clothing, all you'll need are shorts or tights and a t-shirt, rashie or singlet.

Q: Is this program available to both men and women?

A: Yes, men and women over the age of 16 are able to participate in this program.
