ABSOLUTE MMA SHANGHAI – COMPETITION RESULTS (14/01/2019 – 20/01/2019)

And just like that, the first competition of 2019 is out of the way! DEFGroup held it’s second episode of it’s second season this past weekend at SHBJJ Century Avenue. To switch things up, all the fights were no-gi. The Absolute MMA crew showed up ready for battle as always, and we’re proud of our competitors for putting themselves out there!

Bret continued our Absolute white belt win streak, as he took out the white belt division in all his wrestling glory. Xiaoxing made it to the finals of the coloured belt division, taking the silver medal. Everyone performed great, and we’re more than happy to kick off the 2019 competition year with exciting matches and good results.  Let’s keep the momentum going, and we’ll see you on the mats!

AUSTRALIAN GRAPPLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – INVITATIONAL 3 RESULTS (19/01/2019)

The Absolute MMA St Kilda Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team went to war last weekend on the 3rd Edition of the AGC Invitational at the Arkaba Hotel, in Adelaide South Australia! One of the first tournaments for the year (inspired by ADCC and EBI) AGC saw our very own Coach Mikael Yahaya along with teammate Jeremy Skinner stepping onto the mat to defend their respective titles (under 77 kg and over 77 kg). Unfortunately, due to injury Dion Gadd had to pull out of AGC, with Hugh Boyd stepping up to replace him in a stacked bracket.

Overall, we saw excellent results from the team with Absolute MMA taking home the under 77 kg, and over 77 kg divisions! Great effort Jeremy Paul Skinner, Daniel Schuardt, Mikael Yahaya and Hugh Boyd, you all put on a great display of jiu-jitsu and showcased your skill! Congratulations to all of you on your efforts, thank you all for being such great representatives of the gym.

A great start to 2019 for the team, we can’t wait to see what the rest of this year brings you all!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT – KYLE RODDA

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Kyle Rodda, Financial Market Analyst and regular in our Melbourne CBD Boxing classes. Kyle is the guy that everyone goes to and says “Didn’t I see you on the television yesterday?” and if you keep your eyes peeled, you will indeed catch him on the big screen giving us all the financial news! Super humble and friendly, Kyle is known for consistently working hard in class, rain or shine, and we’re super happy to have him in the gym. Read on to find out more about Kyle!

Martial Arts/Sports: Boxing

How did you get into the sport?

I’d gotten back into playing football, but quickly realized I had no interest in it anymore. I wanted to find something that I could feel passionate about while keeping fit. I Googled boxing gyms in the CBD, found Absolute MMA, and totally found what I was looking for.

What are your immediate training goals?

To learn how to throw a hook properly. 18 months in and I am still working that one out.

What are your goals for the next five years?

By that stage, I’ll hopefully have learned how to throw a hook. If so, perhaps getting into the ring once to experience what competition is all about – that would be a big achievement for me.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

It all starts with the people. Everything else is secondary and evolves from that. The place has such a great culture. I’ve become a fitter and happier person since beginning my training. More importantly, though, I think I have become a better person for all the lessons I’ve learned from all the people I have met.

What is your favorite move?

That awkward thing that happens when one person goes for the fist-pound and the other person goes for the handshake. With my fighting ability, that’s about as graceful and lethal as I get.

Favorite workout/walkout song?

I love my music, so this is tough. I probably don’t listen to enough of the kind of music that would make for a good work-out/walk-out song. My first thought would be Rage Against The Machine – heavy, energetic, and gets you nice and p*ssed-off about the world. A good state of mind to be in before you gear-up to Box.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

“Kyl-o” is as probably as good as I have gotten since being at Absolute. Not too fearsome, unfortunately. Any nicknames I’ve had tend to a derivative of my last name. Simply Rodda is an easy one – Kyle always feels like a pain to say.

What do you like to do to relax beside training?

Playing guitar, outside of boxing, has always been the way I have unwound and centered myself. Otherwise, I have a 6 and 8-year-old brother and sister. I try to spend as much time with them as I can.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

It’s one of the beautiful quirks of training at Absolute MMA in the city: I am Melbourne born and raised, and with the people that I have met, that seems to be a novelty! There are so many different people who train at the gym from so many different backgrounds.

My piece of personal trivia tends to always be that I was expelled from two high schools. That was probably one of the defining features of my upbringing. Otherwise, I think I am just another middle-class, white-break kid from Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs, I’m afraid!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

The people I admire most are those with intelligence, self-awareness and strong ethics. I really enjoy being around people with a truly unique perspective on the world – something different from my own. I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few of these types at Absolute MMA.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

There was a time where I loved dining out. But I went vegan, and your options tend to be narrowed quite a lot if you do that.

So two answers in light of that: Minamishima in Richmond was awesome – the sashimi degustation there was a blast; in terms of vegan eats, Neko Neko is a vegan-Japanese ramen place that I really enjoy.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Go make friends with the raucous crowd training in the corner – they are good people.

“The lean mean Vegan Machine is a great assist to the gym. He always puts in the work and is a great partner to train with.”- Karman Moodley

“Kyle was one of my first good friends at the gym. Not only a great boxing partner, but he can also mesmerize you with crazy knowledge about history. When he’s not at the gym you can find him suited up on telly running the financial review. What a dude!” – Linnea Waestberg

“Kyle is always dedicated to his training. Even after a big Friday night on the piss he shows up for that Saturday class despite the fact he smells like a distillery. Kyle is great advertisement for the gym. He always has his Absolute t-shirt on everywhere he goes. Sometimes I wonder if that’s the only shirt he owns. In all seriousness though, Kyle is always great to have around. He is funny, thoughtful and kind. You know you are going to have a great training session when you partner up with him.”- Ashley Pate

“Kyle is proof that awesomeness can rub off, while I was only able to pass on a pinch of it, that pinch of awesomeness has seen Kyle come a long way… Or maybe it’s his regular consistent hard work always turning up to class putting in the effort?. Either way, once he learns to relax he’ll go even further. Keep at it bro.” – Jeremy Wharerau

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

My mum and dad. They created something out of nothing.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pizza.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

I’d be a tradesman or a criminal.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

A bull, because they’re strong and keep moving forward. Or a gorilla, cause they are kings of the jungle.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I was in the Australian Army Reserve.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Goodfellas.

“Alby is a little sh*t head with some massive ego. But when you get to know him, he’s actually one of the funniest and kindest people around. He’s very supportive of his team and friends. He fights like a ninja and kicks serious asses. The one thing I admire most about Alby is that he never lets losses bring him down, but instead he comes back way stronger. I will stop now before his head gets too big. Oh and I guess he looks alright in neon pink. ? “- Carmen He

“Team captain hits hard, trains hard and parties hard. Great bloke and I might even give him my shorts one day.” – Fei Yen

“I known Albert since he was 19 years old, he started with me at Young Bulls from Day One, introduced by his good friend Anthony Trejo. He came into my gym as ‘Fat Albert’ and was playing footy back then. Then he started training Muay Thai, a couple of years went by and he wanted to fight. Competing from amateur to the A grade professional. Won two WBC state title belts, he had around 30+ fights now. He is a hard-working young man and is always willing to learn new things. He trains with me here and then went to Thailand for 6 months at Kiatphontip fighting all the high-level fighters on Max Muaythai in Pattaya and he is the first person to coach the Timorese team. A few years ago, he won bronze medallist at the world amateur Muaythai championship in Bangkok. Albert is like a son to me. He got charisma, he’s a funny dude, putting funny faces on Instagram.” – Coach Laos Toohey

“Esse paneleiro 24 e’ com certeza uma das pessoas mais legais da AMMA, sempre alegre e ajudando a todos. Como lutador semprer faz um grande show e tem o respeito de todos Meu irmao preto.”- Coach Thiago Stefanutti

“Whoever says “those that can’t do teach” has clearly never met Alby. Gun pad holder, amazing mentor, and inspiration to everyone at the CBD. Blessed to have him in my corner.”- Georgia Verry

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: SARAH SINCLAIR

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Sarah Sinclair, three stripe white belt and one of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ladies! Sarah can be found powering through two to three classes a day and is progressing rapidly in BJJ after making the move from Karate. She loves a good giggle, is a meme master and is always making us laugh in and out of the gym! Read on to find out more about Sarah.

Occupation: Business Banking Associate
Martial Arts/Sports: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

How did you get into the sport?

I’ve always wanted to train in BJJ, however cross training was discouraged in my Karate Club. After I graded to 2nd Dan, I decided to take a break and reached out to a friend who trained at Absolute. Best decision I’ve ever made 🙂

What are your immediate training goals?

Currently strengthening and rehabilitation of my knee, so that I can roll more confidently and fully trust my movement. Competing is also on the horizon this year for me, so I’m aiming to ramp up the training and get better at take downs.

What are your goals for the next five years?

In the next 5 years, I’d like to have more experience with competing, possibly even have the opportunity to do some training and comps overseas. Movement is also something I’m committed to improving with respect to training.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The people are amazing here, and the calibre and range of experience across the coaches and other students means that I will always have the opportunity to improve. The culture and support here is fantastic.

What is your favourite move?

I’m really liking the weave pass at the moment, and also the bow and arrow.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

I like a lot of random stuff – I’d say that the majority of my collection is a combination of alternative, metal, progressive trance and deep house. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Lane 8.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

The first nickname I got at Absolute was “Sezzy-Lee” haha, I’ve recently also acquired “Jandals”.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I’m probably the most relaxed after a swim, but I usually wind down on the couch watching something on Netflix 🙂

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in a rural town on the Bellarine Peninsula called Portarlington and moved out when I was 19. Since then, I’ve kind of bounced around Melbourne and finally settled in St Kilda 🙂 Also one of the best decisions I’ve made 🙂

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I’d say the people I train with, especially the people who have the time and patience to coach me during a roll 🙂 you know who you are.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Oh my god, there are so many!! I really enjoy ramen – and there’s an awesome ramen bar in China Town called Fukuryu Ramen. If you upload a pic of yourself with the ramen on Insta, you get free green tea ice cream!!! Also, if you’re ever down Geelong way, Fujisan on Ryrie Street have a decent ramen as well 🙂

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I’d probably tell myself to relax (something that I’m still needing to remember now and then). Also to listen to my body and not ignore the niggly little injuries.

“A powerhouse, keep an eye on her or you’ll be in danger! On and off the mats. She’s also a firecracker and fun to hang out with.”- Tina Trinh

“Sarah’s determination and dedication are dwarfed only by the positive energy she brings to the mats, she’s like a beam of sunshine in a Gi, straight to the top I reckon.” – Maxwell Mews

“To explain Sarah I have prepared a bunch of meme and video references Christmas Pud video, the meme breaking the treat in half does not count as two treats and the video of a golden retriever playing with a golf ball, drops the ball in then celebrates with a romp. With references like these, it’s clear, Sarah loves a good laugh, she’s funny and adorably lovable when it comes to training and rolling.

She is my daily dose of fun and laughs, I always leave with a smile when hanging out with Sarah, you stay classy and never change.” – Apryl Eppinger

“She’s funny, nice and very positive. On the mat, she has an aggressive style and she has been progressing a lot lately. She’s a nice girl.”- Thiago Stefanutti

MEET THE TEAM: IMANTHA ALAHAKOON

Imantha Alahakoon, affectionately known as Iman, is our valued casual staff member on desk at reception, stepping in to save us on weekends and when all seems lost! Training primarily in Mixed Martial Arts out of Absolute MMA Collingwood, Iman loves a good chicken parma as much as he loves riding around Melbourne on his beloved motorbike. He’s a genuine soul who loves his metal music, and is someone we genuinely appreciate stepping into shifts when no one can. Read on to find out more about Iman!

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Ironman / Chocolate Man – I dont even know

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Participating in the Greg Jackson seminar. That opened my mind up to a new way to think in the cage/gym.

What made you start Martial Arts?

My best friend. He did Taekwondo and I wanted to give it a shot. Did it for about 3 years then quit … to do tennis.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I’ve worked in IT and still do. I started working at Absolute as I wanted to change industries and was given an opportunity to work in the gym as a casual. I wanted the change because sitting on my ass 8 hours a day is not something I fancy.

Favorite workout/walkout song?

I cant name just one song. Right now there are a couple of songs I smash off Architects new album that get me real gee’d to train.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

KISS – Keep it simple, stupid.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favorite memory from when you were younger?

Mum dropping me to my best mates house and finishing Pokemon Fire Red in like 9 hours. Still my best achievement to date.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Not being in the rat race – Travelling the world and training.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

My mum. She brought me up as a single mum, did everything she could for me and I’m forever grateful for having such a strong, determined woman in my life. She’s stood by a lot of the stupid shit I’ve done and helped me open my eyes and grow the f**k up. Love ya ma!

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Hanging out with the misso or mates and depending on Melbourne’s awesome weather, taking my bike out through the twisties.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

An eagle – you get to fly. Who doesn’t wanna be able to do that shit?

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

I’ve actually done no proper traveling. I do want to go to Hong Kong to get my leg tattoo finished off and then do some exploring through Asia and then North America and Europe. So … I wanna go kinda everywhere.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I look like a 10 year old without a beard.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Well, I was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Sydney when I was like 3 years old. I moved to Melbourne almost 3 years ago now, with my ex girlfriend who had a job opportunity here. I’d been to Melbourne twice before this all happened, the last time I told myself I’d move here one day so I kinda said ‘f**k it’. Quit my job, told mum I was gonna move to Melbourne and yeah, drove from Sydney to Melbourne with all my stuff in my car.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

This wasn’t when I was a teenager, but I was about 9/10 years old and in Sri Lanka on holiday with Mum. I was playing outside with a friend and we saw a snake go into a house – so naturally we threw rocks at it (how dumb, right?) and lo and behold the thing started chasing us. My mate was on a bike so he started peddling along and we (I was a chubby little kid) gapped it to the house. We had a security person who had to let people in and out so I’m yelling telling them to let me in, spamming the bell and they take their sweet ass time…I’ve hated snakes since. I also hate spiders, but that’s another story and this time I was the victim.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Cars/Bikes – My best mates dad was a race car driver and a mechanic so that was something I got into in my teens (Also Need for Speed Underground 2 helped, heaps). It’s probably one of a few things I’d still love to get into. From my basic mechanical knowledge, fixing and troubleshooting things is really satisfying.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

My face – it looks funny.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

Today. I just ZipPay’d close to $600 of new training gear. Not sure if I’m happy or not though …

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favorite? Any funny stories?

I did tennis for a little bit. Then skateboarding. I was sh*t at both to be fair.

Have you ever worked a job not in the fitness/martial arts industry? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

Yep, still do. I’ve worked in a few different IT roles. Being a project manager was probably the most involved role I’ve had though. The biggest thing this role has taught me is to be resilient. When things go wrong, you’re the first person people are abusing and when things go right you may get a thanks if you’re lucky and also not taking things to heart.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Rice Queen. It was the place one of my tattoo artists recommended to me and it is LEGIT.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Ace Ventura.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

The Barefoot Investor. I read this book and then a week or two later I went to Ducati and bought a brand new motorbike (Imantha, you stupid). It’s true though; The heart wants what it wants.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Stick with it and don’t give up. Also to do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Wrestling and not TKD.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Simon – His experience in the army would help heaps and I imagine he could build a shelter or at least try.

Amit – A black/chocolate person is the first to die in any zombie/horror movie so if there are two of us, we can work together and let someone else get eaten. #blacktics

Joe – Wouldn’t Panic! at the disco, let alone in a Zombie apocalypse. Skilled in the art of closing doors.

“Iman is the whitest Sri Lankan that has ever existed. His personality can be best described as manifestation of that ‘S’ thing every kid drew in year 7. Despite never having played a game of cricket, he has somehow found a way to bat far, far beyond his average, and would easily put Steve Smith to shame…again.” – Mithunnan Saseetharan

“Iman broke my ankle and I will forever remind him about this event. On another note, Iman is a great team mate who I enjoy partnering up with as he has a lot of patience to explain drills to me when I don’t understand them after being told over 20 times what to do. I always have a good laugh with Iman and hope he doesn’t break my ankle again.” – Lisa Kyriacou

“Iman is the world’s oldest teenager, usually found doing push ups while listening to my chemical romance, his training soundtrack is questionable. MMA? He’s panicking at the wrong disco.”- Joe Boobyer

“Imantha May be little but his heart is BIG! Always provides a big smile, some help if you need it but more importantly high levels of banter! He’s a ray of fucking sunshine behind his emo angst. He’s the panic to my disco ?“- Marisa Amaya

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: KIM COUSINS

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Kim Cousins, brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, active competitor on the BJJ scene and super mum to not one, not two but three teenagers! Kim has competed at the Asian Open, the Pan Pacifics, Masters World Championships, AJJC (The Australian Jiu-Jitsu Championship), IBJJF Sydney Open and many more competitions. Thank you for all your support and help with our Women’s BJJ team Kim! Read on to find out more about this superwoman!

Occupation: Planning & assessing officer

Martial art: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

How did you get into the sport?

My ex husband did BJJ back in the 90s. When we split up, I was looking for an exercise outlet to get me out of my garage and squat rack, and get me meeting some new people. Bjj seemed like the obvious choice.

What are your immediate training goals?

To land a clean take-down ?

What are your goals for the next five years?

To keep improving, and work on the weaker sides of my game. Lately I’ve been working on wrestling and am enjoying working on my stand up and No-Gi game.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The people and the skill level. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to be able to train in three world class facilities, all bringing their own uniqueness to my training.

What is your favourite move?

Bow and arrow.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

I have very eclectic music taste. My playlists include anything from Madonna to Black Sabbath to Depeche Mode. I do love some bad 80s dance though, much to my kids’ disgust.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

I’m sadly still yet to receive a Portuguese nickname ?

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I love bikram yoga. While sweating in a 40 degree room for 90 minutes isn’t everyone’s idea of relaxing, I love it!

Who am I kidding? Food and alcohol (as in photo above) is how I really like to relax.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m born and bred in Melbourne and love it too much to move. I come from a strong swimming family; my grandfather went to the Commonwealth Games and I grew up getting up at 4.30am to train before school. Now my kids are a bit older I’m planning to hit up the early morning classes in the New Year. I’m definitely a morning person!

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I look after my kids full time and don’t get out much, so anytime that someone wants cook a meal for me, I’m hugely appreciative. (I’m happy to take any offers?)

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Don’t be so hard on yourself (I still struggle with that one!).

“Kim is a power house! She also fits more into a day then I fit into a week! I always love getting to partner up with Kim on the mats… her technical expertise and her sense of humour ensure it’s gonna be a good session!”- Maryanne Mullahy

“Kim is my hero! Whoever knows her history on BJJ and life will understand why she is my hero!”- Coach Thiago Stefanutti

“Kim is an awesome training partner, always smiling and full of energy. Trying to get out of her half guard is nerve-racking.”- Juliette Brillet

“I have heaps of admiration for Kim. Not only is she a total badass on the mat but she’s an incredible, genuine person. Absolute MMA are very lucky to have her as part of the team, and I’m very grateful to have her as a team mate! ?”- Hannah Gorman

“Kim has the kind of arms Gods envy. When you need support Kim will back you in anyway she can (arms included). My main training partner and a very dear friend and sister, she has pushed and challenged me on the mat more than she knows. Kim is both warm and giving. And I hope one day I can have arms like hers and be as awesome as she is on and off the mat.”- Apryl Eppinger

“Kim is such a powerhouse! Whether it’s jiujitsu, wrestling, lifting, yoga or cryotherapy, she’s always busy putting everyone else to shame with her seemingly endless energy and drive. She’s a supportive team mate, a frequent competitor and a good friend. You couldn’t ask for a better teammate.”- Natalie Hobbs

Read on to find out more about Apryl!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Making the Philippines National Team in Jiu-jitsu.

What made you start Martial Arts?

I credit coach Livia Gluchowska for the introduction and the addiction.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I’ve been a member since 2012 when the mats were yellow marshmallows and I’d wanted to work with the gym for the longest time. Prior to working with the gym I have worked numerous jobs in retail and admin. And always been athlete on the side.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Still doing what I love, rolling, working with great people and hopefully a black belt.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Pretty lame but have to say the people I roll and train with. They tend to be a mix of friends from around the world and other teams and also from Absolute. Picking one wouldn’t do justice to the wealth of knowledge and things I have experienced in the sport.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I have a bunch of samurai Star Wars action figures in a display cabinet, yup I have action figures and loooots of lego.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

Pretty sure a goth athlete was something that confused many people around me as I grew up.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Dogs, my dog and other people’s dogs. Pretty sure they are the greatest creatures on this planet.

Have you ever worked a “normal” job (not in the fitness/martial arts industry)? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

Yes, many…don’t invest your time in meaningless jobs. Do one you actually love or enjoy…seriously, it makes a huge difference. It took me years of asking but the gym finally hired me. Now I am really happy being in a place I love being in.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Terminator 2, still no other movie like it today.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker.

“Apryl is such an asset to Absolute MMA. She selflessly gives her time to others and is always there for me on and off the mat. I seriously couldn’t ask for more in a human being.”- Kim Cousins

“I owe 100% of my friendships through the gym to Apryl. 70% is just her being an awesome friend and the other 30% are people who talk to me because I know her. 10/10 would recommend as a buddy”- Sarah Wahjudi

“She does alright for a blue belt.”- Daniel Howard

“Apryl is a talented grappler who is loved by her friends and adored by wild animals everywhere. In August 2014, I saw her befriend a pack of dingos in the Otways. The Alpha clearly respected her killer instincts. I highly recommend learning from Apryl if you’d like to learn wicked jitz or how to talk to animals.”- Han Wahjudi

“She is a savage on the mat and an absolute epic human being off the mat. One of the nicest humans you could meet… she puts in countless hours with the girls team and leads from the front. What an asset to have on the amma team!”- Nick Metcalfe

“Apryl is not only a beast to roll with, she’s truly one of the most supportive and friendly people in the gym. She’s always willing to help you with drilling, and she will always push you to be the best you can on the mat. She’s part of the reason we have such an awesome culture for the women doing Jiu Jitsu at Absolute.” – Sarah Sinclair

“Apryl has been back to Estonia more than I have in the last five years.”- Richard Lattemagi

“Apryl is one of the most kind and scary women you can find on BJJ in Australia.
Dedicated student, coach and good friend she is always able to help our teammates.
I think she will be one of the best female coaches in Australia in the future.
I like Apryl as a person because she is real and if she is unhappy with something she will tell why. I like people like that.” – Coach Thiago Stefanutti

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BEK DIMASE

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Bek Dimase, aspiring Muay Thai fighter who is looking to make her debut in 2019! Bek has shed an inspiring amount of 8kgs this year, and we couldn’t be prouder of all that she’s achieved in terms of her fitness and martial arts technique. We can’t wait to see Bek get in the ring next year and we know she has the motivation and dedication to go far. Read on to find out more about Bek!

Occupation: Project Integation and Change Lead
Martial Arts/Sports: Muay Thai and kickboxing

How did you get into the sport?

I’ve always had a fascination with fighting and followed a lot of different promotions/fighters. Always curious but too nervous to try, it wasn’t until I met my partner (who coincidentally is a kick boxer) and his continuous encouragement (nagging) that got me over the line to give it a go. Haven’t looked back since my first class!

What are your immediate training goals?

Immediate training goals are to lose the last 5 kilos to fight weight, get up my sparring and land that beautiful question mark head kick… and of course have my first fight!

What are your goals for the next five years?

The next 5 years is a big one… I’m just focused on getting to my first fight, haha! I just want to keep pushing and see where I end up. And travelling, I intend to do lots of that!

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I love the people more than anything. The coaches and other members have made the gym feel like a second home to me. I’ve always been able to be myself, have fun, challenge myself, and am kept accountable… I’ve never experienced that at any other gym.

What is your favourite move?

I love a good question mark kick and the oh so sweet feeling when it lands, haha.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Currently is – here comes hot stepper – Ini Kamoze.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

The only consistent ones are “the boss” or Toohey likes to call me “Bekka the Wrecka”.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I love a good beach session or just being outside generally. I find sunshine and nature helps me reconnect to myself and disconnect from the hustle and bustle that life and work can sometimes bring.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

My favourite childhood memory is going to my Nonna & Nonno’s place at the end of every summer on National Wog Day (it’s real!) and making pasta sauce from my nonno’s home grown tomatoes. My job was to pop the basil in the bottles and I remember my nonno would inspect them! It’s a tradition that we still do every year and means so much to me…. nonno still inspects my basil placement… it’s a tough gig!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

For me, those that are honest, kind, courageous and show integrity are the people that I look up to the most, as these are attributes I aspire to grow within myself. Over the last year, I’ve really looked up to my parents, siblings and partner more and more. Through a really tough year, they’ve demonstrated all of the above and that has really inspired and helped me be a better person.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Um, if I had to pick it’d be the club sandwich from Smith & Deli, or just the whole menu at Smith & Daughters next door.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I’d probably tell myself four things
1. It’s okay to be uncomfortable, it’s not okay to give up.
2. You don’t have to get it right the first time
3. Learn to love the journey, it’s a bloody long one!
4. KEEP YOUR GUARD UP WHATEVER YOU DO!!

“Bek is a super dedicated member of the gym. She always shows up and works hard! You’ll always get a good sweat on if you get to train with this Nak Muay. Try to do it before she betrays us and leaves Australia forever next year!”- Mary Hoang

“So very proud of what Bek has achieved over the last year or so. When she started she had one good punch with the rest as powerful as a slap in the face by a wet bus ticket but kicked like a mule, an ancient broken down one legged blind mule…so we had room to grow. Not to mention some big weight loss goals. Bek through consistent hard work has shed the kgs turning into a bomb throwing gangsta who now kicks like a young powerlifting mule whose mother was just insulted. All this growth and hard work has her ready for her debut fight this February. Onya Bek, go get it!!!” – Coach Jeremy Wharerau

“It’s always great pairing up with Bek in class. She’s dedicated, has great technique, gives good pointers to you on how to improve and sets a perfect pace! Bek has overcome some hard points in her journey in 2018 and I can’t wait to see what 2019 brings for her. Thanks for all your honesty, advice, dances in between rounds and friendship this year!” – Emilie Yap

“Bek is such a happy energy to have in the gym – when you walk in and she’s there I know we’re going up a level for that session. Super excited to see her fight in 2019!!”- Georgia Verry

“Bek is the hardest working person I know. Whenever she sets her mind on something there is nothing that will stop her. She’s the best muay thai partner and definitely isn’t afraid to let you know if your guard is down. She always pushes me to the limit but somehow makes it fun at the same time. I can’t wait to see her step into the ring and smash it in 2019!” – Licia Yeo

“When I first saw Bek I thought she had the potential to become a quality fighter. She always listens to my advice, asks good questions and when I explain something to her she does it. She surprised me when she said that she wants to train to become a fighter- then I say she’s talking my language now! Hopefully it will be a good year for Bek, I believe in her division she will crack some heads!” – Coach Laos Toohey

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

There’s a lot of things I’ve done in my life…everything I do has turned into gold.

What made you start Martial Arts?

I was inspired by Bruce Lee at the age of 13, my Aunty took me to the theatre, the movie we watched was ‘Enter the Dragon’, Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris. From that day on, I wanted to be a martial artist. Everybody knows who Bruce Lee is!

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

Before I was involved with the gym, I ran my own gym called Young Bulls. I ran that gym for 15 years plus, teaching Muay Thai, Boxing and also Taekwondo. We used to also practise BJJ there. When I closed Young Bulls, I met a gentleman named Simon Carson, Simon I met through Anthony and Albert who trained at my gym. Then I got asked by Simon and Dan, “Do I want a job teaching at Absolute MMA CBD?” and I worked for this club ever since. After six months I got promoted to head coach of Muay Thai at Absolute MMA CBD.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Oh God…hahaha. I can’t remember! “I got the power”!

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

My memories growing up…I never thought I’d be a fighter, or a martial arts instructor. I lived next door to a Muay Thai gym, called Muay Laos Gym. Everyday I would hang out after school there, sometime I got asked to do some sparring just to earn a penny. That’s how I started becoming a martial artist, with Bruce Lee as my idol. Those were some of my favourite times.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself in five years still a head coach but not involved with the fight game. I’ll always want to teach classes, maybe I’ll teach kids self defence. Maybe I retire.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

One meal….man I can’t say anything…what my favourite…Asian food. I pick Asian food.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

Wow. I would still be working in a factory somewhere, or being a bartender. I used to love being a bartender.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I like to relax by listening to soft music, put my feet up on the couch. That’s it.

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

Asia, it reminds me of where I came from. Spain is nice too, and Italy is good.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I’m always a funny guy! I’m firm but I’m fair. I make people laugh.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

When I first came to Australia I was living in Sydney, then my parents moved to Albury Wondonga. I got a scholarship for my taekwondo in Melbourne, then I moved in Melbourne. Melbourne is my home now, I been here since 1990. That’s a long time.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

Sh*t, I can’t remember.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

I love playing soccer. I always wanted to play in the red team when I was a teenager, we won a premiership when I was a teenager. My uncle was a professional soccer player. I grew up with that.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to my parents, they worked so hard to bring me here for a better life. I’ll always look up to them. Made sure we grew up with everything.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

Learn how to sing. I did terrible, Muriel! I’m learning how to sing from Pok.

Have you ever worked a “normal” job (not in the fitness/martial arts industry)? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

I used to be a storeman, and bartender. I learn how to drive a forklift, learned how to make cocktails…I don’t think I remember that anymore.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Pho in Springvale, one of my favourite place. I always go eat there after a good workout.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

Oh sh*t. I collected a lot of ACDC and Bon Jovi back in the old days. I like to listen to them. All the 80s music. Bob Marley is relaxing. No violent music. MC Hammer, no violent hip hop like these days. Like every gym I go to, 50 cent and all this. Music shouldn’t be like that. Ahhhh, I don’t wanna talk about it.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

The one, the one with Al Pacino….the gangster one. Scarface!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Always be good, no matter what you do. Try to do your best, lose or draw you are already the winner. Anytime you step in the ring, win or lose you’re already a champion.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

I would pick Albert Xavier, young Darren Gn and the fun lady who is always helping me, Emilie.

“Toohey has elevated all our striking games to the next level. May the legend of the Asian Bull and the Three Wongs live on.” – Andre Nguyen

“The second best lefty that I know (the best is me, of course!). Toohey is an awesome coach, knows everything about martial arts, and has an endless supply of funny nicknames. So lucky to be able to train with you!!” – Yvonne Chow

“I’ve been to a few mix martial arts gym’s in Melbourne, but Absolute MMA was the one for me. My first class I attended was with Toohey! He’s an awesome coach and even a friend, always making me work hard, supports and motivates me when needed!
Always leaving his classes with a smile on my face!”- Arinah Zain

“Toohey is the most loveable man at Absolute MMA. He also has a wealth of experience and knowledge in martial arts and life in general if you can just learn to decipher what on earth he is talking about”- Darren Gn

“Toohey is like a fun, loving Asian father who looks after his kids in Muay Thai. He is very patient and treats everyone from beginners to pros equally. He loves a good laugh and makes his classes fun to go to. He is passionate about the sport and always has everyone’s best interest at heart. “Bob your head! Bob your head!”.”- Carmen He

“Toohey is the man. He knows the ins and outs of western boxing and traditional Muay Thai, chuck in some high level spinning shit too. Put all those together and you have an atomic bomb of fight knowledge. Whether it’s life advice or fight advice his words always ring true and deep. Even when he’s calling you a fat lady boy. Much love.”- Liam McNeill

“Toohey is a true role model, highly respected.”- Tas Dionisakos

“Toohey is one of the best coaches that I have ever had. He pays attention to every one of us and corrects us when we’re doing something wrong. He’s an easy person to talk to and he’s fun to be with. ♥️”- Amy Ong

“Honestly there’s so many ways to describe Toohey, even his laugh deserves its own recognition. He’s like the cool teacher I wish I had but never really did because unfortunately my teachers had the misfortune of teaching me maths ? .
But anyways, It’s great to see that Toohey is someone so passionate and committed to teaching a sport he truly lives for and I hope all future students will be inspired by him as I have.” – Leanne Huynh

“This little sifu is full of wisdom and has a talent for bringing out the best in his students. He spends hours and hours and is truly passionate about passing down his vast knowledge and experience down to the next generation of strikers. Loves to crack a joke even though no-one understands them and brings smiles and energy to his classes.” – Fei Yen
