FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (12/07/2019 – 14/07/2019)

Our Mixed Martial Arts fight team kicked off the weekend for the crew on Friday, with Sem Kakembo and Will Toumbos representing in the octagon at Wollongong Wars MMA 7. First up was Will who had a very good first round, catching a body kick to take down his opponent with a counter right hand. Will controlled the round in a dominant performance, letting up his opponent to slam him. Unfortunately in the second round, there wasn’t enough energy left in the tank, with Will receiving a body shot and being unable to continue. Not the result he wanted, however Will definitely has all the tools to win in the future, and we look forward to seeing him get in there once again!

Sem Kakembo put in an excellent performance in his bout against a tough local opponent. Sem was dominating the first round, dropping his opponent with a head kick, taking him down, taking his back and chasing a RNC. In an exciting back and forth round resulting in Sem’s opponent sustaining a cut, it was close, and it could have gone either way. The second round went to Sem’s opponent, however it was definitely close. In the third round, Sem was controlled against the fence, and didn’t get the result in the end in what turned out to be a very close fight.

The Saturday saw our MMA team continue to work hard, with Danielle Steven and Bekhzod Usmonov making the journey to Tasmania for their bouts on Legion 10, with Bek headlining as main event. Danielle fought well on the night against opponent Emily Nalu in a 61kg bout, with the first and second rounds being extremely close rounds. Unfortunately, Danielle got mounted in the last minutes of the fight and sustained a loss via TKO. Lots for Danielle to take away and learn from in this bout, and we look forward to seeing her come back stronger for the experience!

Bek was fighting a very seasoned opponent in Shaun Etchell (6-1) in a 62kg bout. Bek put in a fantastic performance, and it was clear that he is much improved from his last appearance on Hex. Fighting smart, Bek managed to secure take downs and hold his position to dominate on top. He also put in a great striking display, utilising his low leg kick in the second and third rounds to dominate. A great effort by Bek against a tough opponent where he used cage control, pressure against the fence and top position to grind out a win. Congratulations to Bek!

Battleground (Amateur Fight Event) at the Doncaster Shoppingtown Hotel saw two of our team eager to prove themselves in their first Amateur Muay Thai fights. Joseph Choundary won via unanimous decision after an aggressive performance against his opponent, and Ben Arias unfortunately lost his bout via decision, despite performing well against an opponent with a significant reach advantage. Congratulations to both of you on your debut bouts at the amateur level, we look forward to what the future holds for you both in your fight careers!

Absolute MMA also had a strong contingent represent at the AGC (Australian Grappling Championships) over the weekend in Adelaide at the Arkaba Hotel. Jeremy Skinner is now the u77kg champions for the 3rd time running, and Dan Schuardt is the 77+kg champion for the second time, securing his win via triangle. Lachlan Warne put in a strong performance, but ultimately lost his Superfight against opponent Declan Moody (Adelaide Jiu Jitsu Academy) via arm bar. And a special shout out to Bradley Wiedenhofer who made it to the u77kg final, but lost to team mate Jeremy via heel hook. Congratulations to all who stepped up and competed!

Sunday saw strong performances from active competitors Bobby Sandhu and Hugh Boyd at the Central Coast Open held at the Gosford City Basketball Stadium in New South Wales. Bobby got through some tough sports to secure gold in his division and is on a great streak competitively, having just come off a win at Grappling Industries in early July. Hugh took away a double gold for his efforts, battling through six fights and achieving six submissions to secure his division and the open weight. Huge congratulations to our competitors! Amazing effort from the two of you.

We also had team members working hard locally on the Sunday, with Rob Pelle, Edward Smith, Josh Ber, Nicholas Duggan, Trenton McNee and Amir Gholizadeh all competing in wrestling at the Australia Cup, held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). Amir and Josh both took away 1st place, with Josh in the Junior Male 74kgs, and Amir in the Senior Male Freestyle 74kgs. Well deserved team! We also had the following results from the team:

  • Nicholas Duggan – 3rd in the Senior Male Freestyle 74kgs
  • Edward Smith – 5th in the Senior Male Freestyle 86kgs
  • Rob Pelle – 3rd in the Senior Male Freestyle 70kgs
  • Trenton McNee – 5th in the Senior Male Freestyle 79kgs

Well done to everyone who competed and placed!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: RIDZ WAN

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Ridz Wan, one of our amateur Mixed Martial Artists who has competed on promotions such as Path to Hex, and Eternal MMA. Also known as “Mr Malaysia”, Ridz has a background in bodybuilding and is famous for his muscles around the gym! Supremely humble despite his achievements, Ridz is working on reaching the professional level in MMA and we could not be prouder to be a part of his journey. Looking forward to seeing you back in the octagon soon Ridz! Read on to find out more about Mr Malaysia!

How did you get into the sport?

It was during the Ronda Rousey era. That was when I only knew about UFC and MMA. Wanted to give it a try, so I looked it up on the internet, found Absolute, and I have been training/competing ever since.

What are your immediate training goals?

Working more on my stand-up.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Becoming pro.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Some of my best friends are from the gym. Sometimes I just come in to chat with them lol. Sometimes though, most times I still train.

What is your favourite move?

Armbar!

Favourite workout/walkout song?

ACDC – Back to Black.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

”Brcocoli arms”, credit to Toohey.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Playing my PS4 and bring my partner’s dog to the park.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Grew up in Malaysia. Moved away when I was 17 to another state, away from my parents. I was into bodybuilding throughout college and even competed in a few competitions. Never had any interest or thoughts of trying martial arts at all back then. I was all about those gainz, and smashing weights. I worked as a financial adviser for almost a year after finishing college before I decided that it was not for me. Had a talk with my parents and they suggested to further my studies here in Melbourne. Came here four years ago, started martial arts about a year after and I have been hooked ever since. I remember my first free trial class that I did about three years ago. I was bigger and muscular than I was now, and this girl I partnered with just double legged me, and got me in an RNC before I knew what was happening. It was then I knew I needed to learn this lol.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Those who are humble and respectful. No matter how good you are, there is always someone better, so stay humble.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I grew up in Malaysia so it would have to be Nasi lemak. Mamak restaurant in the CBD makes the best one around Melbourne, I think.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Listen more to your coach, not YouTube.

“This guy is a legend both on and off the mat. Seriously down to earth and incredibly talented.”- Stephanie Scipione

“Ridz is an absolute killer in the gym, very friendly and not that strong……. this man loves his kimura grips, but what he really needs to work on is his abs and biceps (I’m totally not jealous of his muscle). PS, if you want his body, I’m his dietitian/trainer.”- Bailey Wang

“The lil Malaysian warrior that eats too much broccoli haha. Happy guy that always has a smile on his face and loves to train.”- Drew Anthony Birch

“Easily one of the nicest and most swole members at the gym.”- Andre Nguyen

“My boy Ridz one of the nicest human being in the matts. He’ll look after you during training sessions and even share his wisdom too. But always get to amaze me seeing him lifting people up with a double leg so flawlessly. This guys is a machine!”- Luke Catubig

“An absolute beast both ground and stand up. He’s the Mighty Mouse of the gym, the only difference between them two is that Ridz still has a set of hair and maybe one or two more abs. ?” – Donn Malate

“Ridz is the smallest giant I ever met. What a monster.”- Thiago Stefanutti

“The only guy who can potentially defeat mighty mouse johnson. All round nice guy with a million dollar smile. It’s great training with the former Mr Malaysia.”-Kevin Lau

“ex-Mr Malaysia, pretty sure he still is.”- Rio Iskandar

“Ridz, aka Mr Malaysia aka Mr Armbars. With a disproportionate volume of Muscle to height, a smile like Tom Cruise in risky business and speed like a cheater, Ridz is an athletic charcter built for action movies ( playing the bad boy) and mma. I’ve been super fortunate to have been able to train side by side with Ridz for a few years now, he is a great team mate, martial artist and someone you want you train and partner with. He is the sole reason I know how to escape armbars ? I hope he continues to train and compete in MMA, Ridz has had a super impressive transition to striking after grappling for so long. I hope you lose some Muscle and abs so we can all feel better about ourselves Ridz- miss you mate!”- Kyle Morgan

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: VAUGHN YOUNG

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Vaughn Young, Muay Thai fighter born in Trinidad, and raised in Canada. Despite having trained with the Absolute MMA crew for just under 5 months, Vaughn has rapidly become a valued member of the fight team and our in house clinch technician. As generous as he is tall, Vaughn is always happy to help out and share his knowledge with the team. We would like to wish him all the best for his upcoming bout on Roots 12 (Rebellion Muay Thai) on July 20th, 2019. Tickets are now available to purchase at our Melbourne CBD location! Come down on the day to support Vaughn and the team, and read on to find out more about this legend!

How did you get into the sport?

When I went to Thailand I saw my first fight at the Bangla Boxing Stadium. To me, it was the ultimate stand up combat sport. I originally wanted to do it for fitness, but my coach convinced me to have my first fight. He said he saw potential.

What are your immediate training goals?

To develop my cardio (Thanks Coach Dan!) and boxing.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Reach 30 fights and a few more belts.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

It’s a complete gym. The the resources I have are limitless for anything I could possibly want to improve on. It’s a big gym with a small family feel.

What is your favourite move?

I don’t really have a favourite move, but I like toying with people’s minds. A lot of fakes and strikes they didn’t see coming. Mind games.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Hard pad rounds/ Jidenna- Love Live the Chief

Nicknames & Fight Names?

I’ve actually never had a fight name. Really should get on that (haha).

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Listen to music in nature and skydiving (weird I know).

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’ve only started training in Muay Thai for the past 2 years. I have an addictive personality, so when I like something I get obsessed. I had 9 fights in 18 months. The most interesting Muay Thai story I have is having the chicken pox 9 days before my first fight and still fighting and securing the win. I had an MCL tear 2 weeks before a tournament in the states and still fought on one leg. I won my first 2 fights, but lost on points in the finals.

I was born in Trinidad which is in the Caribbean. I spent half my life there and the other half in Canada. I like to travel and as a result I get bored if I stay too long in one place.

I wanted to escape the cold weather in Canada while still being able to develop my Muay Thai skills and improve my skydiving. Australia gave me the option to do all 3. I’m a city boy by nature so Melbourne was an easy choice.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to people who are humble and have uncompromising work ethic. People who act instead of making excuses. I try to surround myself with these sort of people because I believe you are who you surround yourself with.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Lentils as anything. I like what they stand for. They are community based, help out those in need and the food is actually AMAZING. The lasagna is out of this world.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Stop comparing yourself to others. Keep your head down and do the work. With this mindset you will get where you want to be.

“I can’t work out his accent. I’ve known Vaughn for four and a half months. At first, I didn’t expect anything from him, he’s been competing Muay Thai before I met him. He’s a natural athlete who is dedicated to his sport, a quick learner and a good listener. On the 20th of July 2019, it will be the first time he fights under my guidance. Hope he gets the win for the Absolute MMA family! Anyone who knows Vaughn, come support him on this day!”- Laos Toohey

“First time I sparred Vaughn, he shoved his palm in my face and laughed. I knew we’d get along after that – he’s such a crafty fighter…cannot wait to see him in the ring here in Australia.”- Georgia Verry

“Vaughn is as deadly as he is sexy…lethal combination. In the short time we’ve been training together he’s shared so much knowledge and has helped everyone train harder and smarter. Can’t wait to see him in proper action in the ring! Last thing, thank you Vaughn for the free vasectomy, it is hugely appreciated.”- Fei Yen

“Awesome training partner to have around, absolute technician in the clinch!”- Andre Nguyen

“Vaughan is that devastating knee fighter that everyone has nightmares about. He’s only been training with us for a short amount of time but since he arrived he’s elevated everyone’s clinch game. Aside from that he’s as cool as a cucumber and a pleasure to be around.”- Darren Gn

“Vaughn is one of the most dangerous vegetarians I’ve ever met, the Caribbean clinching machine that he is will hurt you on the outside with his range and kill you on the inside with knees. Thx for conditioning my ribs xx”- Alex Taylor

“Don’t be fooled by Vaughn’s balmy attitude, the man was engineered for Muay Thai and he ain’t afraid to show it! Whilst being a clinching beast, he is also very gentle and always happy to share his tricks. Great guy all round.” – MK Rubae

FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (04/07/2019 – 07/07/2019)

Ever present on the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition scene, Craig Jones spent the 4th of July in Orlando, Florida at the KASAI Super Series. Craig was up against a familiar face in Aaron “Tex” Johnson who Craig previously submitted via inside heel hook at EBI 14 in December 2017 (Craig’s pass breakdown available here), with Tex clearly keen to pay back the loss he experienced prior. In a KASAI super fight ruleset of 10 minutes with points, and a golden score overtime (if no clear winner), Craig focused on kimura attacks, working to expose the back and sink in a RNC for the win within the first 2 minutes. Congratulations to Craig on a stellar performance! This week is a busy one for Craig, who competed at KASAI with his match against Anthony Rumble Johnson on SUG 9 upcoming in just three days! More on that to come.

Interstate in Sydney, wrestling champion Reon Mahima entered the octagon on Superfight 12 for his second MMA fight, on fight 4 of the card against opponent Peri Santos. Setting a solid pace, Reon fought through some strikes from Santos, and took the fight to the ground around the last minute of round one, looking dominant from a top position. The bell sounded for round one with Reon still dominant on top, and after an evaluation from the fight doctor, it was concluded that Santos was unable to continue due to a foot injury. Congratulations to Reon on his first Mixed Martial Arts win! We look forward to seeing you back in the octagon soon!

Saturday saw our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors head to the Dominance Sub Only Gi Round Robin in Richmond, with notable performances from Vesper Cheon who secured a Gold, Hannah Cooper getting in there with 1 win/3 losses in her first competition after a two year hiatus, Linda Raymond taking away Gold in her weight class and Rebecca Stahlnacke winning three out of her four fights. Cooper Anderson and Elena Gomez also performed well on the mats, and we would like to congratulate them on their efforts, and for being amazing representatives for the gym! To everyone who competed and received medals, we would like to congratulate you on continuing to challenge yourself and moving forward in your martial arts journey!

Blue belt Bobby Sandhu represented for the team at Grappling Industries Sydney, powering through 6 matches to achieve 6 submissions, with his fastest match ending in 13 seconds! An amazing performance from Bobby, who spent a total amount of 9 minutes on the mats to achieve Gold in the No-Gi Adult Intermediate division for -155lbs. What a weapon!

On Sunday, July 7th, Craig Jones went to Portland, Oregon for the main event on Submission Underground 9 against MMA star and two time UFC light heavyweight title contender, Anthony Rumble Johnson. There was a significant size difference between the two, with Craig weighing in at 208lbs, and Rumble at 278lbs. Pulling guard to start, Craig attempted a triangle, before using his z-guard to enter leg entanglement and secure a quick win via heel hook. Back to back wins for Craig this weekend, defeating Johnson and Johnson in a double victory! Amazing work from Craig.

After a huge week at Absolute MMA Thailand with the Lachlan Giles Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Camp, the team took to Bangla stadium in numbers to watch Kru’s Athit and Watt in action, which was a huge treat for all present! First up for the team was Kru Watt, with the first round fought at a slower pace, both fighters looking to feel their opponents out and get their reads. In the second round, things stepped up and both fighters went to work. Kru Watt delivered a series of brutal leg kicks to the rear leg, and after the 3rd heavy kick, he knew the fight was over.

In the main event of the evening, Kru Athit returned to the ring against an opponent with a significant size advantage. Both fighters started strong, Kru Athit kept his back on the ropes and took some heavy shots, however continued to attack his opponents back leg. Round 2 saw some scary moments for Kru Athit as his legs went a little shaky after a big elbow strike, but he stuck to his game plan and continued to attack the rear leg of his opponent. In round 4, enough damage had been done, and Kru Athit came out with the victory after another huge leg kick to achieve the K.O!

A very special moment followed for all in attendance as the Absolute MMA team flocked the ring to celebrate. A very special night for the team!

MEET THE TEAM: GLEN FRASER

Coach Glen Fraser is a life-long martial artist, personal trainer and coach. He started his martial arts training at age 10 with Kung Fu and earned his black belt at age 14. He later moved on to Karate where he earned another black belt, won multiple state titles and worked as an instructor for 4 years. In 2005 he completed his Personal Training, Fitness and Boxing Certificates and started working in the fitness industry. Glen has competed in both Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai, is known for having perfect hair and for being the resident flex master of Collingwood! Read on to find out more about Glen!

First black belt (kung fu) at age 14, then 2nd black belt (karate) at age 26.

What made you start Martial Arts?

Bruce Lee movies.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

Our former Muay Thai team (sor.jaiphet) joined forces with Absolute MMA.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Bangarang- Skrillex.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

“Take what is good, reject what is useless and add to it what is uniquely your own” – Bruce Lee.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Music and singing.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favourite?

Rugby Union and Volleyball.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Shrek.

“Glen has been the OG Muay Thai fight team assistant coach since Absolute was an empty shed with a few bags and pads. Always there to corner fighters, always teaching us something new, always making us laugh and always putting us on our ass (in sparring).”- Jenna Bryan

“Upon my triumphant yet tentative arrival at Absolute, Glen was a welcoming and friendly presence. I was so nervous, practically hyperventilating, but Glen made me feel at home and I decided to stay. Glen is a most excellent human and he has great hair. His warm up routines are to die for, literally.” – Mary Panjari

“Glen is my right hand man. Over the past 8 years Glen has been there through every fight camp and every show working tirelessly to prep our team. A clever and powerful fighter in his own right. Glen now shares his knowledge with the next generation. I couldn’t have done it without him.”- Jai Tao

“Fast paced pad holding and warm ups harder than a lot of peoples workouts, you won’t forget any sessions you take with Glen! There’s a lot more to this man than the biceps, but that won’t stop him flexing as soon as the cameras come out.”- Joe Boobyer

“Every gym has one. The ultimate pad holder built like a tank. Sacrificing his shoulders day in day out for the fighters. But it doesn’t matter, because he’s built like a tank. His speciality used to be taking fights on late notice and knocking them stiff with his right hand, then he would go back to being a tank. Much love for Glen.”- Liam McNeill

“Largest guns in Melbourne? Slick Muay Thai? Ace coach? Great Pad holder? P4P best hair in Absolute? I mean, is there anything Glen can’t do?”- Amit Narayan

“With a keen eye for always knowing when to be “flex ready” for the camera, Glen is the man you want in your corner. His heart is as big as his guns ? Knowing someone has got your back not matter what is something I have always cherished in Glen. He has a way of knowing when to push you past your limits, and knows when you need your nerves calmed. I could go on and on about how great this man is, however at sparring don’t be fooled by his calm demeanour, I have seen those eyes flick into fight mode!”- Angelique De St Jorre

“Boy, am I grateful for Glenn! His patience and passion to teach his students really shows and it is much appreciated by many. Glenn is scary AF to spar, and is an absolute machine man.”- Lisa Kyriacou

“Known for his intense warm-ups (which are often more painful than the class itself), Glen is an ever reliable, beloved figure at Collingwood; who has worked tirelessly to help the next generation of fighters. If they were casting for a live action remake of ‘Moana’, Glen would just need to be himself for the role of Maui.”- Mithunnan Saseetharan

“Glen is the most consistent face at Absolute and probably the person you can rely on most. Many of our victories have his name written all over it. Our very own tarzan.”- Danielle Franks

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: GENEVIEVE SOVEREIGN

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Genevieve Sovereign, a movement specialist with a gymnastic background, who has now turned her hand to martial arts! Genevieve has coached gymnastics in the past, and has a passion for psychology, having studied it postgraduate to her engineering degree. Read on to find out more about Gen!

Occupation: Desk-bound office monkey, plotting for freedom bananas.

Martial Arts/Sports: Serial dabbling – honestly if it’s movement related, I’ll at least give it an inquisitive sniff.

How did you get into the sport?

Gymnastics hooked me from wee-tyke age and taught me the importance of self-awareness, broad exploration, seeking challenges, competing intelligently and acquiring bananas to lead a fulfilling life. With all that preoccupying my thoughts, Richard had locked me into membership before I even realised this wasn’t the book sign-out desk at the library. Damn son.

What are your immediate training goals?

I’ve recently pestered Dan Howard into doing PT sessions with me, in the hopes of becoming less embarrassingly unfit. My immediate priority is rebuilding enough stamina to start attending Toohey’s classes again without keeling-over halfway through his warmups.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Central to my freedom banana empire’s ongoing expansion will be deepening my understanding of health, fitness, movement, martial arts, the human condition and other Universal Truths. I also wouldn’t mind looking deadly in a bikini at some point in my life – I have faith it could still happen one day.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

My ringtone, going to voicemail – it symbolises all the missed opportunity and interpersonal connection I’m eschewing in favour of “personal development”.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Well, my kettlebell class buddy Nicola has started calling me Bendy, presumably due to my great mental agility and eagerness to please everyone at all times. I guess. In the unlikely event of ever needing a fight name at my ripe old age, I reckon something ambiguous and multipurpose like “Love Tap” would be pretty fun. Calling dibs now FYI.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Contemplate the nature of reality and the meaning of life. I’m totally serious actually. If you ever want to shoot that sh*t, hit me up for a weekend pint or few.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in the vast northern wilds of Canada. Moved to the big city for uni and somehow earned an engineering degree (major: chemical engineering/minor: bioengineering). Stumbled into Oz on a bizarrely specific visa that only existed for a few years, for engineering grads of a shortlist of foreign unis (thanks UofT). Fatefully met and married Matt, my love and best friend ever, here in Melbourne. Recently finished postgrad in psychology, because logical career progression is overrated. Now strategising optimal deployment of my freedom banana hoard, to break these self-imposed desk job shackles and establish my empire (or win the lottery and spend life until liver failure as an internet troll).

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I’m exactly five feet tall. It freaks the hell out of me not to be looking up to someone. Short people are f**king weird-as. On a deep and spiritual level though, I try to look up to everyone. We’ve all got things to teach each other – it’s just a matter of perception and reception. And maybe drunkenness. Personal drunkenness often helps when I’m trying to look up to everyone.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

“@t Ease – Easy Thai” in Lonsdale Street is my absolute favourite. The manager and wait staff are so lovely, and the food is (as far as my admittedly non-expert palate is concerned) consistently delicious, across the board.

“My fellow Movement Artist Specialist is usually found looking back at ya upside down doing handstands, pikes and backbends! Don’t let her smile trick ya as she will catch you in a sneaky Americana or quick armbar when you blink!”- Kelz Lau

“Genevieve loved us soooo much that she came back again. So happy to have her back in the gym on the mats. She’s always enthusiastic and eager to learn. Making it a pleasure to work with her. Her positively is simply infectious that you just can’t help returning her smile.”- Apryl Eppinger

“Gen is one of the most vibrant human beings in the gym. Don’t be deceived by her looks, though she may be nice and smiling walking around the gym, on the inside she’s a warrior and a true martial artist that has been training her entire life. Very grateful to have met a martial artist like her.”- Luke Catubig

“Genevieve is a legend. She is always smiling and ready to roll.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“Gen is a great training partner. She is so friendly, caring and has a positive attitude ready to tackle any challenge.”- Rebecca Cerra

MID-YEAR BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU GRADING (22/06/2019)

This past Saturday we celebrated our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team with not one, but TWO gradings at both Absolute MMA Melbourne CBD and Absolute MMA St Kilda. Amazing to have students from all of our three gyms across Victoria join together for the occasion! Huge congratulations to our four new black belts Kim Cousins, Mikael Yahaya, Lachlan Warne and Alex Russell. It takes approximately ten years for a student to reach black belt level and we could not be prouder to have been a part of this journey with our students!

Also advancing to brown belt and surviving the gruelling physical test with technique honed through countless hours on the mats were Oliver Smith, Journ Tang, Matthew Karakoucakis and Jarrod Beardwood. There were some epic battles on the mats with our students being put through rounds for over two and a half hours!

We had 7 students advance to join our new purple belt crew, and these students are among some of the most dedicated individuals in the club. To all our new purple belts, congratulations and well done! We are also supremely proud of all our new blue belts who are a very impressive new cohort! You all have earned your blue belts, and as the first major milestone in your jiu-jitsu careers, this is certainly a moment worthy of celebration!

Thank you to everyone who put the graders through their tests and gave them support! We are so excited to see what the rest of the year brings for you and would like to thank you for being a part of our amazing grappling community.

MEET THE TEAM: LUKE “THE LYCAN” CATUBIG

Luke “The Lycan” Catubig has been training martial arts since the age of 11 and competing in MMA since 2005. He is the Brace Featherweight Champion and has fought in Australian Fighting Championships and Hex Fighting Championships, two of the largest MMA organisations in Australia, as well as URCC in the Philippines. In 2014, Luke scored the fastest knockout in Australian Fighting Championships history, stopping his opponent in 10 seconds. Luke also has some serious photography and video skills under his belt, and knows a lot about Melbourne’s food scene having worked previously as a chef. With a heart as big as his overhand right, Luke is a super welcoming presence in the gym and has set many of his students on the path to amateur competition. Read on to find out more about “The Lycan”!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

BRACE MMA CHAMPIONSHIP BELT.

What made you start Martial Arts?

When I was a kid, somebody gave our family a computer with a street fighter game on it. Since that day, I wanted to be like Ryu and become a martial artist, but my father had other plans for me. He wanted me to be a pianist (haha), so I started playing piano at the age of 5. 6 years later, I was in school walking in the corridor with my classmate and suddenly this group of boys tried to bully us. I confronted one of them, and next thing I know, I was fighting this guy with 15 of his friends around us. I stood and fought alone and got a massive black eye. Lucky enough, no one helped him to bash me. My uncle saw my eye, brought me to a Taekwondo dojo, and from there on the rest is history.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I came here in Melbourne to study Cookery 7 years ago. I was already doing MMA back at home, and was planning to continue my journey in Austraia. So I googled on the internet and typed ‘the best gym in Melbourne’….TADA and that’s how I ended up here in ABSOLUTE MMA.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

“He who loves peace prepares for war” – Lao Tzu

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

I was just a simple happy kid that can be manipulated by food growing up in Dumaguete city, Philippines.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

BUILDING AN EMPIRE!

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

My inspiration comes from my experience, achievements, failures and growth. So it’s not a WHO it’s a WHAT.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

NO WAY if this happens…I’d rather die 🙁

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Back in the Philippines, I’ll be at the BEACH, here in MELBOURNE…I’ll probably be in a cafe eating desserts (haha).

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

ANCIENT DESTINATIONS! Because I’m fascinated with them and they’re mysteriously beautiful.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I used to do piano lessons just because my teacher offered me bread and milk to play. Haha.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Hmm how did I end up here? Well my parents wanted me to study Nursing, so I did that and studied it for 7-8 years. In the last year of my course, I realised that Nursing was not for me. So I switched to the culinary arts, because I love food. 2 years later I graduated, and my parents wanted me to further my study/skills in Melbourne to become a professional chef. I agreed to it…and that is how I ended up here in Melbourne doing what I love…MARTIAL ARTS. Haha.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

I started playing the PIANO at the age of 5 and did it non stop for 13 years.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Playing piano, I used to hate it at the start, but my dad knew how to motivate me. He used to give me money or tell me to buy me a toy if I played the piano for him or our visitors. I was 5 during that time and as the years went by, I started to enjoy it. I love playing it and just being in the moment.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Those people that chose to live and fight for their dreams, instead of just dreaming it.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

It took me 7 years living in Melbourne, and I finally got to see Australian animals at the zoo.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favourite? Any funny stories?

BASKETBALL, one of my favourite players is MICHAEL JORDAN.

Have you ever worked a job not in the fitness/martial arts industry? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

I used to work in a kitchen and realised right away that greatness is not found in this place for me.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Where do I begin!? One of my fave place is RED SPICE ROAD, I love their pork belly with chilli caramel and apple slaw.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

Classical music because it’s elegant, relaxing and makes me feel creative.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

The Book of 5 Rings. I can relate to the book as a fighter/warrior using the methods/strategy of Miyamoto Musashi writings, and apply it to my journey in Martial Arts.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I’ll tell young Lukaz “The Lycan” that this path is the right path.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 Absolute MMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Daniel Howard – He’s smart and might give us a chance to get away.
Thiago – He’s strong and we definitely need a grappler in the TEAM.
Toohey – Me and Toohey will use all our striking skills to beat the Zombie.

“Thanks for all the brain damage and hugs!!”- Fei Yen

“Lukaz is one of the most welcoming people in the gym. Despite his vast experience and resumé, he’s quick to put the most inexperienced folks at ease and show them that Absolute is a place for professionals and beginners, alike.”- Amit Narayan

“Can land a killer body shot!”- Georgia Verry

“Lukaz makes training fun through breaking a drill down to learn the ‘why’ behind the movements, then progressively adding on throughout the session to match everyone’s learning rates. It keeps everyone smiling, sweating and brought together through collective violence and discipline.”- Joshua Zuccato

“We’re the best of friends. Nobody’s got your back like your brother! Blood in blood out ✊??”- Moses Bentley

“Lukaz’s passion for martial arts shines through every day. His superior striking technique, eye for detail and continuous encouragement pushes me to my limits. I wouldn’t see the improvements I have without Luke. He says he’s a warrior but he’s really a teddy bear.”- Melanie Medlen

“Lukas is a great guy and always here to give some striking tips. He is also the only guy who can’t be choked. Many people tried, everyone failed.”- Kevin Jousset

“Keep your guard high or Lukas will give you a headache real quick!”- Andre Nguyen

“Lukey was one of the first coaches who welcomed me to Absolute years ago and started this obsession with martial arts! Will always remember those extra burpees for coming late to class… enjoyed by me and the whole class.”- Yvonne Chow

“Lukaz is a talented martial artist who always loves to share his passion and inspire people. Whether it’s fitness or wanting to fight, Lukaz will always be in your corner to help you reach your goals. I knew he was the coach for me when he also shares my favourite strikes body punches and leg kicks.”- Rebecca Cerra

“I see Lukaz sparring from time to time, I trained him in the early days of Collingwood, Luke keeps a consistent style and he’s got power punching in both hands. When you sparring him, if you get lazy, he’ll let you know! He is a respectful person.”- Laos Toohey

“Lukaz has grown up a lot in Absolute from his beginnings as a young man coming from the Phillipines. It wasn’t an easy move to move countries and be away from his family, and through developing his career he’s set himself up for a good life here in Australia, and become a key training partner for his twin flame Rebecca.”- Apryl Eppinger

“Lukaz! The man who is passionate and motivating about martial arts. Always in the gym either putting on work to better himself, or training his students. They say pain is your teacher, he is definitely that pain during the fight team sparring class (lol).”- Ridz Wan

“Pro tip. Keep your hands up and give him waffles afterwards and you should be safe. No guarantees though.”- Liam McNeill

“Lukas is a brother.
I’m following his fight life in Melbourne since his day one in town, went to his corner many times.
He is a family man, very dedicated to his work and his students.
The first thing that come on my mind when I think about the Lycan is he is a warrior.
This man loves the social media, dress well and make the life has more glamour.
The curious thing about Lukas is he is always on time at the gym for training but he always come to the mat 10 minutes after the session starts lol.”- Thiago Stefanutti

“If you’re preparing for a fight, Luka is your guy. He’s a beast and never stops pushing forward. He’ll keep you working and honest.” – Vaughn Young

“Lukaz is a wonderful coach and human being! I really love his outlook on martial arts and self-development, and how open minded and growth focused he is. Back during our very first session together, I especially remember meshing with his philosophy of martial arts as continually evolving, and each practitioner creating their own identity as a fighter. I was very grateful to connect with a teacher like that!”- Genevieve Sovereign

THIRD COAST GRAPPLING 2 RESULTS (21/06/2019)

James Walters and Craig Jones hit the mats last weekend in Houston, Texas on Third Coast Grappling 2, on a stacked card featuring the likes of Nicholas Meregali, Cyborg Abreu and DJ Jackson. James “Swolters” was first up for our Absolute MMA duo on the under card, facing off Diego Almeida in a Brown Belt No Gi match. Rolling really well, James looked calm and composed on the mats, unfortunately losing in overtime under the golden point rule. Great to see James taking on major overseas competition, and more experience can only benefit Jame’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey going forward. We wish James safe travels on his year away from Australia, where he intends to train, compete, and improve himself as a martial artist! James would like to thank Craig Jones for being such a good training partner, coach and mentor stateside in the lead up and during the event.

The main card rolled around, and in the co-main event of the night, Craig Jones faced off against fellow black belt Matheus Diniz, who he had previously secured a decision win over at GrappleFest 2 last year in September. Last year in September the rule set was submission only and the two battled through 20 minutes of frustration, in Houston this year it was a points based event. Craig lost this time around via points, with Diniz strategically playing to the strengths of his game after he got up on points. Great to see the two facing off once again, in a clash of two very different styles, despite the two being No-Gi players!

Well done to both James and Craig, who despite sustaining losses, were great supports for each other throughout, and we are proud to have them representing the team overseas. Looking forward to seeing you both on the mats again soon!
