MEET THE FIGHTER: ROB PELLE

What discipline do you train/compete, and what are the details of your next contest?

I practice and compete in all the major Martial Arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Thai and Boxing. My next MMA fight is scheduled for July 27, on Eternal MMA in Gold Coast (Queensland).

How did you get into martial arts?

I was bored with life and wanted a crazy challenge. I’d always been competitive and enjoyed sports and I felt momentum in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, so I jumped on board.
I haven’t been involved in the sport for long. Before training I honestly disliked the sport. I just didn’t get it, two people locked in a cage, fighting one-another. Mind you, I was a complete dickhead of a person who was more interested in flashy suits and how I looked and dressed above anything else. Total f**king douche bag. Once I was introduced to martial arts, it changed my life for the better. I was completely humbled, and it showed me how much I didn’t know, not just in martial arts but in life. It’s funny how Martial Arts started off as something I disliked and suddenly transformed into the most important thing in my life. It saved my life and for that I’m truly grateful.

What is the first fight you remember watching?

Like I mentioned, I hadn’t been watching too much MMA, so when I started watching it was already well-established. The first fight I was glued to watching was TJ Dillashaw vs Dominick Cruz for the UFC Bantamweight Title. It was an amazing fight, an actual piece of artwork. Here are two of the greatest Martial Artists of all time, and just the way they fought was so majestic and fluid. It wasn’t chaotic and brutal like most non-MMA-fans think the sport is. The styles were beautiful to watch, very calm and had lots of amazing footwork and movement.

What fight do you feel has had the biggest impact on you, this can be either a fight you’ve watched or a fight you’ve had, and why?

The fight mentioned above (TJ vs Cruz) had the biggest impact on me. What was most impressive was how cool and fluid the fight was. Most fighters sit in the pocket and swing from the Bleachers; the best of the best fighters use their mind to fight, which is what these guys did. Two legends using lots of movement, feints, head movement, unorthodox methods – for five rounds! Neither of them looked the slightest bit tired so their cardio was elite. It was addictive to watch and I’m glad I had the opportunity to watch it. This was the fight which opened the door for me and made me pursue this journey.

It’s common for fighters to be given fight nicknames, have you ever thought of one for yourself that you wish took off but it never did?

This is a funny question; I’ve been given a few Nicknames but none have stuck around unfortunately.
– The Cannoli Kid (for my love of the greatest Italian desert in the world, Cannoli’s)
– Reckless Rob (sort of my style, especially when I’m Wrestling or trying to pass Guard)
– Bambino (translates the Little Man or even Baby Boy in Italian. It’s terrible but I think it’s pretty funny)

If you were a videogame character (street fighter, mortal kombat, tekken etc), what would your special move be?

Charizard (My Favourite Pokemon) can do the two things I wish I could, Breathe Fire and Fly. If I can’t pick between the two, then I want my special move to be to turn into Charizard hahaha!

What do you love about training at Absolute MMA?

Absolute MMA is not just a gym, it’s a way of life for most people, especially me. Without Absolute I feel I would be lost in life, living and breathing without any purpose. Absolute has saved me from dark days, it’s introduced to some of my best friends and has made me a far better person than I was in the past. I owe my life to Absolute MMA.

What do you think is the best piece of advice you have received throughout your martial arts journey?

“Stop asking how much you can get this week. Start asking how much you can give this week.”

I’m constantly battling my thoughts every day, planning which sessions I can make. Once I do make those sessions, I find myself just ticking boxes, not getting the knowledge and work from the session. Once I heard that advice, especially the second part (HOW MUCH CAN YOU GIVE) it truly created a monster inside of me. Now when I train, it is with purpose, with intent, with the desire to grow, to learn and become addicted. Wanting to come back for more. This has been an amazing change in focus and motivation for my training.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Hahaha take it easy on your training partners and not try and drop them. My first ever class I partnered with my Brother so there was a sense of establishing who was the Alpha between the two, but it was stupid regardless. Take care of your training partners!!!

Finally, where can we buy tickets to come and support you in your next bout?

First black belt (kung fu) at age 14, then 2nd black belt (karate) at age 26.

Bruce Lee movies.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

Our former Muay Thai team (sor.jaiphet) joined forces with Absolute MMA.

Bangarang- Skrillex.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

“Take what is good, reject what is useless and add to it what is uniquely your own” – Bruce Lee.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Music and singing.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favourite?

Rugby Union and Volleyball.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Shrek.

“Glen has been the OG Muay Thai fight team assistant coach since Absolute was an empty shed with a few bags and pads. Always there to corner fighters, always teaching us something new, always making us laugh and always putting us on our ass (in sparring).”- Jenna Bryan

“Upon my triumphant yet tentative arrival at Absolute, Glen was a welcoming and friendly presence. I was so nervous, practically hyperventilating, but Glen made me feel at home and I decided to stay. Glen is a most excellent human and he has great hair. His warm up routines are to die for, literally.” – Mary Panjari

“Glen is my right hand man. Over the past 8 years Glen has been there through every fight camp and every show working tirelessly to prep our team. A clever and powerful fighter in his own right. Glen now shares his knowledge with the next generation. I couldn’t have done it without him.”- Jai Tao

“Fast paced pad holding and warm ups harder than a lot of peoples workouts, you won’t forget any sessions you take with Glen! There’s a lot more to this man than the biceps, but that won’t stop him flexing as soon as the cameras come out.”- Joe Boobyer

“Every gym has one. The ultimate pad holder built like a tank. Sacrificing his shoulders day in day out for the fighters. But it doesn’t matter, because he’s built like a tank. His speciality used to be taking fights on late notice and knocking them stiff with his right hand, then he would go back to being a tank. Much love for Glen.”- Liam McNeill

“Largest guns in Melbourne? Slick Muay Thai? Ace coach? Great Pad holder? P4P best hair in Absolute? I mean, is there anything Glen can’t do?”- Amit Narayan

“With a keen eye for always knowing when to be “flex ready” for the camera, Glen is the man you want in your corner. His heart is as big as his guns ? Knowing someone has got your back not matter what is something I have always cherished in Glen. He has a way of knowing when to push you past your limits, and knows when you need your nerves calmed. I could go on and on about how great this man is, however at sparring don’t be fooled by his calm demeanour, I have seen those eyes flick into fight mode!”- Angelique De St Jorre

“Boy, am I grateful for Glenn! His patience and passion to teach his students really shows and it is much appreciated by many. Glenn is scary AF to spar, and is an absolute machine man.”- Lisa Kyriacou

“Known for his intense warm-ups (which are often more painful than the class itself), Glen is an ever reliable, beloved figure at Collingwood; who has worked tirelessly to help the next generation of fighters. If they were casting for a live action remake of ‘Moana’, Glen would just need to be himself for the role of Maui.”- Mithunnan Saseetharan

“Glen is the most consistent face at Absolute and probably the person you can rely on most. Many of our victories have his name written all over it. Our very own tarzan.”- Danielle Franks

Luke “The Lycan” Catubig has been training martial arts since the age of 11 and competing in MMA since 2005. He is the Brace Featherweight Champion and has fought in Australian Fighting Championships and Hex Fighting Championships, two of the largest MMA organisations in Australia, as well as URCC in the Philippines. With a heart as big as his overhand right, Luke is a super welcoming presence in the gym and has set many of his students on the path to amateur competition. Read on to find out more about “The Lycan”!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

BRACE MMA CHAMPIONSHIP BELT.

What made you start Martial Arts?

When I was a kid, somebody gave our family a computer with a street fighter game on it. Since that day, I wanted to be like Ryu and become a martial artist, but my father had other plans for me. He wanted me to be a pianist (haha), so I started playing piano at the age of 5. 6 years later, I was in school walking in the corridor with my classmate and suddenly this group of boys tried to bully us. I confronted one of them, and next thing I know, I was fighting this guy with 15 of his friends around us. I stood and fought alone and got a massive black eye. Lucky enough, no one helped him to bash me. My uncle saw my eye, brought me to a Taekwondo dojo, and from there on the rest is history.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I came here in Melbourne to study Cookery 7 years ago. I was already doing MMA back at home, and was planning to continue my journey in Austraia. So I googled on the internet and typed ‘the best gym in Melbourne’….TADA and that’s how I ended up here in ABSOLUTE MMA.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

“He who loves peace prepares for war” – Lao Tzu

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

I was just a simple happy kid that can be manipulated by food growing up in Dumaguete city, Philippines.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

BUILDING AN EMPIRE!

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

My inspiration comes from my experience, achievements, failures and growth. So it’s not a WHO it’s a WHAT.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

NO WAY if this happens…I’d rather die 🙁

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Back in the Philippines, I’ll be at the BEACH, here in MELBOURNE…I’ll probably be in a cafe eating desserts (haha).

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

ANCIENT DESTINATIONS! Because I’m fascinated with them and they’re mysteriously beautiful.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I used to do piano lessons just because my teacher offered me bread and milk to play. Haha.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Hmm how did I end up here? Well my parents wanted me to study Nursing, so I did that and studied it for 7-8 years. In the last year of my course, I realised that Nursing was not for me. So I switched to the culinary arts, because I love food. 2 years later I graduated, and my parents wanted me to further my study/skills in Melbourne to become a professional chef. I agreed to it…and that is how I ended up here in Melbourne doing what I love…MARTIAL ARTS. Haha.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

I started playing the PIANO at the age of 5 and did it non stop for 13 years.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Playing piano, I used to hate it at the start, but my dad knew how to motivate me. He used to give me money or tell me to buy me a toy if I played the piano for him or our visitors. I was 5 during that time and as the years went by, I started to enjoy it. I love playing it and just being in the moment.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Those people that chose to live and fight for their dreams, instead of just dreaming it.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

It took me 7 years living in Melbourne, and I finally got to see Australian animals at the zoo.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favourite? Any funny stories?

BASKETBALL, one of my favourite players is MICHAEL JORDAN.

Have you ever worked a job not in the fitness/martial arts industry? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

I used to work in a kitchen and realised right away that greatness is not found in this place for me.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Where do I begin!? One of my fave place is RED SPICE ROAD, I love their pork belly with chilli caramel and apple slaw.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

Classical music because it’s elegant, relaxing and makes me feel creative.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

The Book of 5 Rings. I can relate to the book as a fighter/warrior using the methods/strategy of Miyamoto Musashi writings, and apply it to my journey in Martial Arts.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I’ll tell young Lukaz “The Lycan” that this path is the right path.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 Absolute MMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Daniel Howard – He’s smart and might give us a chance to get away.
Thiago – He’s strong and we definitely need a grappler in the TEAM.
Toohey – Me and Toohey will use all our striking skills to beat the Zombie.

“Thanks for all the brain damage and hugs!!”- Fei Yen

“Lukaz is one of the most welcoming people in the gym. Despite his vast experience and resumé, he’s quick to put the most inexperienced folks at ease and show them that Absolute is a place for professionals and beginners, alike.”- Amit Narayan

“Can land a killer body shot!”- Georgia Verry

“Lukaz makes training fun through breaking a drill down to learn the ‘why’ behind the movements, then progressively adding on throughout the session to match everyone’s learning rates. It keeps everyone smiling, sweating and brought together through collective violence and discipline.”- Joshua Zuccato

“We’re the best of friends. Nobody’s got your back like your brother! Blood in blood out ✊??”- Moses Bentley

“Lukaz’s passion for martial arts shines through every day. His superior striking technique, eye for detail and continuous encouragement pushes me to my limits. I wouldn’t see the improvements I have without Luke. He says he’s a warrior but he’s really a teddy bear.”- Melanie Medlen

“Lukas is a great guy and always here to give some striking tips. He is also the only guy who can’t be choked. Many people tried, everyone failed.”- Kevin Jousset

“Keep your guard high or Lukas will give you a headache real quick!”- Andre Nguyen

“Lukey was one of the first coaches who welcomed me to Absolute years ago and started this obsession with martial arts! Will always remember those extra burpees for coming late to class… enjoyed by me and the whole class.”- Yvonne Chow

“Lukaz is a talented martial artist who always loves to share his passion and inspire people. Whether it’s fitness or wanting to fight, Lukaz will always be in your corner to help you reach your goals. I knew he was the coach for me when he also shares my favourite strikes body punches and leg kicks.”- Rebecca Cerra

“I see Lukaz sparring from time to time, I trained him in the early days of Collingwood, Luke keeps a consistent style and he’s got power punching in both hands. When you sparring him, if you get lazy, he’ll let you know! He is a respectful person.”- Laos Toohey

“Lukaz has grown up a lot in Absolute from his beginnings as a young man coming from the Phillipines. It wasn’t an easy move to move countries and be away from his family, and through developing his career he’s set himself up for a good life here in Australia, and become a key training partner for his twin flame Rebecca.”- Apryl Eppinger

“Lukaz! The man who is passionate and motivating about martial arts. Always in the gym either putting on work to better himself, or training his students. They say pain is your teacher, he is definitely that pain during the fight team sparring class (lol).”- Ridz Wan

“Pro tip. Keep your hands up and give him waffles afterwards and you should be safe. No guarantees though.”- Liam McNeill

“Lukas is a brother.
I’m following his fight life in Melbourne since his day one in town, went to his corner many times.
He is a family man, very dedicated to his work and his students.
The first thing that come on my mind when I think about the Lycan is he is a warrior.
This man loves the social media, dress well and make the life has more glamour.
The curious thing about Lukas is he is always on time at the gym for training but he always come to the mat 10 minutes after the session starts lol.”- Thiago Stefanutti

“If you’re preparing for a fight, Luka is your guy. He’s a beast and never stops pushing forward. He’ll keep you working and honest.” – Vaughn Young

“Lukaz is a wonderful coach and human being! I really love his outlook on martial arts and self-development, and how open minded and growth focused he is. Back during our very first session together, I especially remember meshing with his philosophy of martial arts as continually evolving, and each practitioner creating their own identity as a fighter. I was very grateful to connect with a teacher like that!”- Genevieve Sovereign

MEET THE TEAM: JAMES SULLIVAN

A very warm welcome to James Peter Sullivan, our newest addition to the reception staff at Absolute MMA! With the same name as the protagonist from Monsters Inc., James is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt and despite not being blue and covered in fur, is a monster on the mats in his own right, having won a New Zealand national championship in the past. What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

That no matter what anyone tries to you, Deep Half Guard is a waste of time and doesn’t work.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 Absolute MMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Are they Undead Zombies brought back to life by a Necromancer or Zombies brought on by a plague virus? I would need to know before I could pick.

“James, although from New Zealand, is quite a nice fellow. Easy going, sharp as a (very blunt) tack, and always down for a roll. We met in Thailand at the very first Craig Jones camp and I’m glad our paths have crossed again. Welcome to the team.”- Oliver Smith

“I’ve not known James very long, but we have hung out a couple of times, he is a funny friendly guy, and I’m really looking forward to rolling with him more!”- Tim Baker

“I met James when he was 15 years old as a kitchen hand, not yet a man, not quite a boy…but he definitely identified as a male. Fast forward to 2015 where randomly I crossed paths with James on the mats of AMMA South Yarra as a purple belt. To my dismay, James had become very skilled in BJJ which deterred me from bullying him (like we did in the kitchen). He had also grown into an even more awesome dude than expected. James is a genuine, unique guy who is always keen to help, and super funny. He can also eat more food than anyone that has ever existed ever. I’m stoked James is at AMMA, his passion for BJJ, health and fitness is an asset for sure.”- Michael Morrison

“He’s wonderful, top bloke.”- Alistair Marx

“I’ve had the privilege of working with James. Hes a funny guy who’s always up for a chat and a killer brown belt.”- Maria Zampogna

Tell us about your life growing up?

Pretty normal life growing up in Adelaide, in the suburbs, south of the city, Flagstaff Hill. Pretty basic. Nothing exciting really.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully not competing at the time, hopefully I don’t even have to teach Jiu-Jitsu to make money, I can just teach because I enjoy it. That’s if I still enjoy it in that way. Hopefully I haven’t done enough damage to my body in these years, that I can still enjoy myself when I’m older.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

I don’t know, you know what’s f**ked up is the better you get, the more famous people you meet that probably once inspired you, you learn too much about them…don’t meet your heroes. I thought I was a bad guy until I met some of these guys.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

What are those things called behind the desk there…those *points*(Blondies.) Yeah, blondies!

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

I have no idea hey, no idea…hopefully I would be working, but I don’t know, probably a sh*tty job. I was doing a psychology degree, maybe that would have panned out. (Did you finish your degree?) The Bachelors, yeah. Which has left me with a HECs debt, and nothing to do with it.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

As a professional athlete…I think I’ve turned into a bit of a psychopath, I’ve been watching a lot of true crime shows lately. That’s been concerning me.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

Sh*t, I don’t even know, hey! If I was going to be an animal…hopefully nothing hunted by anything.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I’ve caught staph five times this year.

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

Kazakhstan, nothing’s beaten Kazakhstan yet, for reasons I can’t say on video/camera.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

Videos games, AFL football and I played basketball.

Can you think of a common inspirational quote that you completely disagree with and why?

I try not to read inspirational quotes. I see too many of them on Instagram. If I see you posting too many of them, you’re getting unfollowed for sure.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about?

I’m passionately following the Trump Mueller report and investigation.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Anyone that accomplishes anything, really. I look up to people that don’t have to work a standard 9-5 to…you know what I mean? If they have a non-traditional way of making income. And I guess if ultimately, it does pan out for them. People who can pull that off.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

No magic tricks, I can balance on my toes like a ballerina.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

I recently went scuba diving, and I’m about to go zip-lining, but I’m terrified of heights.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

I’ve been listening to a lot of classic hits, 60s, 70s, 80s, anything iconic. Anything from that era, it’s usually out of hip hop from today, or that.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

I don’t know if I’ve had a single book that has influenced my life…(Have you read a book?) I’ve just read James Comey’s book, I read that book “Tribe”. I’m reading a book right now, the guy was on Rogan. It’s a tiny book so I shouldn’t brag about it, but now I’m reading about Hitler’s drug use.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I don’t even remember doing my first BJJ class. (Did you do any martial arts before BJJ?) I was a yellow belt in TKD, and I did Judo as well. (What age?) I can’t even remember hey, my memory…I did it pretty young. Year 5 or 6. I think I did TKD younger than that.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Whoever gets staph the most, because I reckon we’ll blend in with the zombies. Lachlan Giles…so he’s on the team, who else….um who else gets staph a lot…f**k I get taken down with it a lot. (Raph used to get staph a lot, we used to call him the French zombie). Really? See it’s the guys who work hard.

“Craig Jones put Australia and Absolute on the BJJ map. We all know how good he is, so let’s not talk about it any more. He gives everyone a lot of crap, but he can take it too. I’m also very proud that I’m better at pointing my feet than him.”- Livia Giles

“My brother Craig shocked us all when he finally made it to the big time in the Jiu Jitsu world. As a younger man he dabbled in Aussie rules football and basketball but really found his calling after completing a modelling course through the Tanya Powell model agency, after some experience down the cat walk he found his true calling and that is his love of being the centre of attention. After years of bullying about being a young male with a dream of making it in modelling he started training Jiu Jitsu for self defence and the rest is history.”- Adam Jones

“Craig has always been super talented and I am really happy to see all his hard work pay off. That being said, he is a jerk and I really hope he has an embarrassing loss soon.”- Lachlan Warne

“Craig is the mean bully of an older brother I never had. He’ll wipe the floor with you, teach you how he did it and how to stop it and then do it to you again anyway. I sure hope Rumble hasn’t forgotten how to throw that overhand right.”- Oliver Smith

“I remember first meeting Craig when him and his soulmate Tom Everett were lifting weights in Collingwood in true meathead fashion. It was a chance encounter that allowed me to befriend and coach two truly stellar gentlemen. Craig’s drive and work ethic is second to none. People often speak of him like he’s some overnight phenom in grappling, but that has always bothered me, because it discounts the work and time he has put in, to becoming one of the best grapplers on the planet. He’s spent over a decade of grappling, refining his skills, forging his own ideas, his own techniques, putting in the hours on the mat and in the gym. Truly one of the most interesting people I’ve met, and someone I’m lucky to call a friend, as well as train. On top of all of that, he’s probably the strongest bicep curler on the planet.”- Amit Narayan

“Craig would have to be the most widely misunderstood grappler of our time. Humble, friendly, hard working, positive. These are just some of the ludicrous misconceptions thrown forward by perhaps the hardest working PR team in history. He is in fact Satan himself.”- Tom Everett

MEET THE TEAM: MARIA ZAMPOGNA

A very warm welcome to Maria “Mez” Zampogna, one of our newest additions to the Absolute MMA family! One of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belts, Maria has trained with us since 2018, has competed in BJJ and is also a regular crossfit competitor with Karate experience. Super bubbly with a great sense of humour, Maria is always smiling and we’re very happy to have her on desk with us. Be sure to say hello if you see her around! Read on to find out more about Mez.

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Competing for the first time and placing second. It was the National Championships in 2018 and I had been training for just under a year. I was absolutely terrified but I gave it a go and was so happy that I did.

What made you start Martial Arts?

I did karate at the age of 10 because my dad forced me to. I got to a green belt before quitting. Fast forward 12 years later, I was doing weightlifting at the time and my weightlifting coach was also a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor. He was hounding me for ages to come and try a class. So one day I finally did and I absolutely loved it.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I heard about Absolute for a while and competed against some of their girls (who were beasts!). My boyfriend, who also trains in BJJ, moved to absolute and I joined about a month later.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

At the moment its Chi Chi by Chris Brown and Trey Songz. It’ll probably change in a month or so.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

The only constant is change.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

I had a pretty normal life growing up. Nothing out of the ordinary ever happened. Life has its ups and downs every now and again to keep you on your toes but nothing too crazy. My favourite memory from when I was younger was when I was in grade 4 and I got my first ever dog! I had never been so happy in my life. It was the best day ever.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

This question always freaks me out, because I can’t even tell you what I’m doing tomorrow. In 5 years I hope to have moved out of home and be married. I’d love to be close to being a black belt in jiu-jitsu and to have a stable job in sports administration. I’d hope to have travelled the world and seen really exotic places.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

I don’t have one person who inspires me, I have quite a few and all for different reasons. I admire those who work hard and dedicate their life to achieve greatness and reach their ultimate goals. I also admire those who have been through the worst of the worst, made it out the other end and smile.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pesto pasta!! It’s absolutely delicious!!

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

Working in hospitality as a Barista.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Walking my dog or watching a good TV series. I’m currently watching The Flash.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

I’m not sure. I took a quiz online and it said I would be a dolphin, but I think I would be a bear. They’re chilled out, mind their own business, sleep during winter, but when they have to go out and hunt they’re on a mission. I think thats me.

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

So far Japan. It was absolutely beautiful.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I used to be a crossfit coach and compete regularly in crossfit.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m originally from Melbourne. I live in the western suburbs. Growing up my friends and I would pretend to play Harry Potter. I used to have this massive tree in my backyard and we would refer to it as ‘The Whomping Willow’. I was very quirky growing up and I think I still am.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

I used to collect butchy boys. Weird I know, and I can’t even tell you why I did it, I just did. I also had an irrational fear that someone would break into my house and steal all my things, so when I used to leave the house I would take everything I thought was really important to me in a bag.

Can you think of a common inspirational quote that you completely disagree with and why?

“Work hard today so you can enjoy it tomorrow.” Sometimes life is really unexpected. You can’t always keep living for the future, you have to live in the moment. Sometimes people neglect the little pleasures life has to offer for the now to focus on the later.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

I really love making coffee, lifting weights and eating dark chocolate. They all make me very happy 🙂

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to successful athletes. They have created a life around what they truly love and it’s not always easy to get there.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

I can raise one eyebrow at a time and people freak out every time I do it.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

Doing an escape room.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favourite? Any funny stories?

I have played football, netball, soccer, karate, swimming, dancing and running. I don’t have a funny story but one time during a soccer match I went to slide tackle my opponent and my studs got caught in the mud and I fractured my knee…was not good.

Have you ever worked a job not in the fitness/martial arts industry? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

Yes, I worked as a payroll officer for less than a month. It was the worst experience of my life. I hate the 9-5 lifestyle, I hated being quiet all day, it was just the worst.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Hunky Dory! I get the grilled salmon pack with sweet potato wedges and a crab stick.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

My ears can listen to pretty much anything. I however do have a very soft spot for Chris Brown.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

It doesn’t get any easier, but you will enjoy and hate every bit of it at the same time and even when you feel like giving up, that’s when you need to keep pushing.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Probably Richard, Apryl and Emilie. They’re the 3 that I work with the most and I’d like to think we wouldn’t kill each other (haha).

“Maria admitted to me once the main reason she took up bjj has been and still is to pass her boyfriends guard, I respect that. She has a goal and she wants to achieve it.”- Apryl Eppinger

“Like a chihuahua; small but deadly.”- Vincent Phan

“Maria is like a (quality) box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get when she rocks up for a shift. She’s perfected the “smile and nod” approach to any situation. I also can’t wait to meet the six month mark Maria. Note for training partners – when rolling with her she loves being put in the saddle position and practicing heelhook defence – especially in the gi.”- Richard Lattemagi

“My favourite person. Her charismatic personality makes training all the more enjoyable. Her willingness to continuously learn and strive to grow each day is inspiring.”- Susy Ferri

“Maria has only been working with us for a few weeks now but she made a strong first impression – she came in for her job interview wearing wrestling headgear which was kind of funny but it was a lot more funny when she started to panic a bit because she couldn’t get the headgear off. I’m not really sure if it was a “good” first impression but we ended up giving her the job so I guess her approach worked?” – Daniel Herbertson

“She hates no gi, and likes gi.”- Clay Lyne

“I knew Maria and I were going to be friends after bonding over some solid R&B tunes in the gym! And after she got super excited over a Pokemon toy. Adorable! She’s super lovely, genuine and a very welcome addition to the Absolute MMA staff.” – Emilie Yap

“Maria has such a bubbly personality and a great sense of humour. She’s always fun (and tough) to roll with and is an awesome drilling partner! Regardless of the day you’ve had, Maria is always there to have a laugh with you and brighten up your day.“- Sarah Sinclair

“Maria is an amazing training partner, always positive, smiling and ready to roll. She seems like a nice person… until she squeezes your neck.”- Juliette Brillet

“I love Maria! She’s fun, caring and has crazy fast jiujitsu! Drilling with her is great because she always aims to implement the correct techniques and I trust her to help me to get everything right too.” – Lenie Vamvesos

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I was born in Melbourne, growing up my family moved around a lot, and we lived all over Australia. We even lived farm life once upon a time, I’ve lived in a tent, spent a short time in an all aboriginal school in Robinvale and moved schools a lot as a teen. There was a stage in my life where I had nowhere to live, with my mum and sister waiting for government housing for about a 2 year period, living in a car, homeless refugee building, and a church. I went through a lot of adversity growing up, learning early on that the cards where dealt against me.

I’ve still got a lot of travelling to do, for the moment it’s Bali, it’s a magical island.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to people that are real. People who have a positive impact on this world. People that are inspiring and spread good energy. People that encounter difficult circumstances, but are determined and courageous enough to live life on their terms, and have created something out of nothing.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

I like listening to most genres, mainly reggae, dance rnb, hip hop. My favourite artist is J Cole, I was able to relate and be inspired by his lyrics from a young age, he’s one of the last ones left that keeps it real.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I’m convinced I was a heavy weight in my past life, sometimes I train extra hard, just so I can eat a lot of food. So if I’ve gone hard on you in sparring, don’t take it personally, I was probably just hungry.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Oliver, because he’s tall and can see the zombies coming. Joe, because he’s got good humour and teeps. Lastly Lisa, because I already know she will be more of a savage than a zombie.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Patience.

“Kaan is either the most well-adjusted, soft-spoken and nicest professional fighter I’ve ever met or a serial killer. He also has some of the worst ears I’ve ever seen.” – Daniel Herbertson

“Ahh yea. Yea nah, yea. What a gun.”- Joe Boobyer

“Kaan is an absolute machine.”- Lisa Kyriacou

“Kaan is awesome, within a matter of weeks of joining the team, it seemed like he was a long time member. He’s got a great work ethic and he’s become a good friend to everyone he’s worked around, and is always ready for a chat and coffee when needed. Kaan is an awesome addition to the team, he brings so much experience to the table, as well as an easy going welcoming presence that makes the gym better!”- Amit Narayan

“Ever wondered what good posture is? Then look no further than Kaan’s perfectly straight back. A great coach and friend, it’s been awesome having you around the gym and I can’t wait to see you throw down on the 29th of March!”- Oliver Smith

“Kaan looks like a human sized chicken nugget.”- Richard Lattemagi

“Kaan looks like a scary bloke from the outside, but he’s all cheerful and lively when you meet him. He’s a dedicated athlete with slick technique and a fair bit of experience to back it up. He also hits like a truck. I reckon he’s going to put the Australian featherweight division on notice, so keep an eye out for him.”- Elliott Glenister
