MEET THE TEAM: NICK METCALFE

Nick “Milky” Metcalfe is a certified yoga teacher, completing his Vinyasa and Yin Training with Warrior One in 2018. Through injuries, and time off the mat Nick discovered the practice of yoga in 2015.  Yoga gave him the tools to better his mind and body connection, whilst also improving his martial arts practice. This upfront yogi is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but also has experience in wrestling, kickboxing and MMA. He’s known for his long limbs, sneaky triangles and an extreme love of his dog, Trey. Read on to find out more about Nick!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Getting my white belt, it was the exact point where my life changed forever.

What made you start Martial Arts?

My best mate was going to PUMMA on the Gold Coast to try out an MMA class, he called me on his way and said, “do you want to tag along?”. I always had an interest but was hooked instantly.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

When I moved from the Gold Coast to Melbourne, a heap of my old training mates told me to train at Absolute with Thiago. I got a job across the road from the CBD gym in my 2nd week of living here, walked in the door and signed up about 4 years ago. I’ve now done my studies to be a yoga teacher and have the opportunity to work with martial artists.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Kendrick – M.A.A.D City.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

It is what it is as it is.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

Growing up the Gold Coast was pretty much beach every day. I grew up in quite a young family, so hanging out with my grandparents and great-grandparents was awesome.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully teaching yoga full time, out of the corporate world, get my black belt.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

I take inspiration from some of the people closest to me the ones that need a mention Aaron S., Thiago S., Dustin B. & Jebba, they’ve been a significant part of my journey to now.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Ice cream.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I have an irrational fear of heights and spiders.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Born in NSW, grew up in QLD, now in VIC. Clare got a job down here, so the amazing partner I am, I decided to come down with her.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

I have all the original Pokemon card set, going to retire on that one day.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Pulp Fiction.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

I have a few, Scar Tissue, Roots of Yoga, Book of Five Rings, Can’t Hurt Me.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Turn up on time, listen to your coach, drink more water, eat all the calories, have fun, don’t quit, it is what it is as it is, Namaste.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat, a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part of your dream team and why?

Amit, we need someone who is clean and sensible. Apryl, she is a killer and is the nice one. George, he will keep all us idiots in line.

“Nick is a great guy, always friendly, always calm and is always keen to roll. We are very lucky to have him at Absolute MMA.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“BJJer, yogi, ginger man. So creative on the mats and a funny one outside them. A brother life has brought from Queensland to us.” – Thiago Stefanutti

“Nick is a simple human being, loves his dog Trey, loves a solid comp class session and teaching us all how to chill out to the max with Yoga.” – Apryl Eppinger

“Long-limbed, red-haired, stretchy, negative-reinforcement-happy (;P) crazy person. He’s alright I guess.” – Natalie Hobbs

“I remember first meeting Nick on the mat when he first came to Absolute and thinking that despite it being one of his first times in the gym, it seemed like he’d been there for years. He’s welcoming to everyone on the mat, helpful to everyone and always quick to make sure everyone feels just as much at home at Absolute as he does. He’s also the guy that I’ll see doing every coaches class, across all of the locations and is known across the whole Absolute family. Hilarious, ridiculously flexible, and the strongest moustache in the game. He made sure to support my classes when I first came on board as a coach for the gym and he’s always there supporting everyone in the pursuits within the gym or outside of. He’s made Absolute his home since day one, and I couldn’t imagine the gym without him!”- Amit Narayan

“Nick’s Friday morning yoga class is the best way to round off a week of training. With his knowledge of yoga and martial arts, he mixes the traditional yin practice with simple self-massage to help release muscle tension and support your body to recover. Then you’re ready to train on Saturday again ?” – Linnea Waestberg

“Nick is a great no bullshit yogi. He loves an unorthodox move, and is partial to a bit of shit talking in the middle of rolling. I have a lot of time for Nick, I’d have to say he’s one of my top 5 gingers.” – Tim Baker

“Nick is fun, creative, open-minded and loves the banter! He has a lot of patience and will always give his time to help others! Namaste Nick!” – Clare Fisher

“Nick is such a great person to train with, always willing to help and throwing jokes while smashing you. Thanks!” – Juliette Brillet

“Milky always has some good stuff to talk about. He is incredibly positive and never short of words of encouragement. He changed his life for the better with his yoga, and I’m really pleased to see the smile on his face every time I see him. He has a nice moustache.”- James Walters

Nicknames & Fight Names?

The Terminator.

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

2017 IBJJF World Championship silver medallist

What made you start Martial Arts?

I started karate when I was 11 because my dad wanted me to be able to defend myself, after 3 months I tried BJJ and haven’t looked back since!

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Dreams by NF.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

Resilience in the face of adversity.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

I grew up in the country town of Mildura in Victoria, living out of town on 2.5 acres and surrounded by animals. I moved to Melbourne when I was 16 to pursue Jiu Jitsu more professionally. A country kid turned city kid. My favourite memory when I was younger was probably just a general Sunday night because we always had family over.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself as a black belt.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

My Dad Luke, because hes always working hard and reminds me that I need to do the same.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Definitely lamb chops lol.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

I have no idea, I only just finished high school and I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do lol, maybe a personal trainer or something.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Play Xbox or film/edit videos.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

Probably an Eagle so I could fly around like a boss.

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

So far Japan, I love the culture and places to see there, it’s super cool. I’ve been there twice, both times competing.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I love skate boarding.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

In my early teenage years/late childhood I used to show chickens. So I would wash and blow dry them (most of the time, mum helped a lot lol) and make them look good and take them to a show where they would get judged, it was fun at the time.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

I love to edit films, I really discovered the passion when I edited a documentary on Professor Thiago for my main year 12 media assignment. It’s very satisfying putting together something from scratch. HMU to see the doco.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

People who go through hardship and don’t complain, but rather learn from it, they teach me that there’s always someone worse off than yourself. Sometimes it’s all about perspective.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

Making memes of Bailey Wang, ’nuff said.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

A few months ago I tried cutting weight for Worlds, it was a terrible experience lol 1/10 would not recommend.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favourites? Any funny stories?

I played hockey when I was around 12, but it quickly faded out once Jiu Jitsu became a priority. I don’t have a funny story from it, but I think you could say my hockey skills in general were pretty funny because I was terrible lol.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Definitely Trailer Park, I recommend the Atomic, for it’s amazing kransky.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

I love rap, metalcore and screamo. With NF and Crown the Empire being my favourite. I love their music because it helps pump me up before competition.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Pitch Perfect 2.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

Sophies World by Jostein Gaarder, I like the way it puts life into a different perspective.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

To be confident in yourself and have fun with it.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat, a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part of your dream team and why?

Definitely Matt Burcher, Thiago and Vince Rogato. Matt will be perfect as bait for us to escape zombie hordes as he doesn’t train anymore and won’t be able to keep up with us. Thiago will be good bait as well, because by the time zombies eat his head Vince and I will be a long gone and chances are the zombies won’t be hungry anymore. Lastly Vince is there to laugh with me when Matt and Thiago get eaten, will be a pissa.

Cooper is seriously an impressive young man. Beside his athletic prowess and wise cracking shenanigans with Coach Thiago, I have to say anyone who knows or who has met Cooper, will quickly learn what a great and humble person he is. Best travel buddy and just all around awesome human being. #feeling”- Apryl Eppinger

“An outstanding teammate, and one of the most gifted young competitors I’ve had the pleasure to train with.” – Matt Burcher

“I’ve been training Cooper since he was twelve years old, firstly a couple times a year when he came to Melbourne or when I visited Mildura. For two and a half years I’ve been working with him full time. Cooper is a great athlete but he’s even better as a person. He is the future of Australian Jiu-Jitsu!”-Thiago Stefanutti

“Cooper is a real trooper. He moved to Melb to train more and be immersed in the culture he wanted and to become the best he could be. I am inspired by his dedication, and he is developing into a great grappler and better person.” – Jimbo Walters

“He’s gotta be one of the baddest man in the gym, can pass anyone’s guard and has an awesome half guard with a handsome Asian model look……. (oh wait…. omg my bad I thought u asked what cooper would say about me) Meh, he’s an ok bloke…”- Bailey Wang

“Cooper is the most selfish training partner you will ever encounter. – Said Nobody Ever

MEET THE TEAM: DANIEL HERBERTSON

Daniel Herbertson is the General Manager of Absolute MMA and the man who keeps this wonderful gym running behind the scenes. Devoted father of two, Herbertson also boasts the record for longest running blue belt in the gym and has an equally long record of working in the martial arts industry. Prior to Absolute MMA, Dan was one of the only foreign martial arts journalists and photographers in Japan in the early 2000s. Known to give stellar advice and for being one of the wisest people in the gym, we truly would be lost without this man. Read on to find out more about Dan!

Nicknames & Fight Names?

I have never been considered dangerous enough to earn a nickname that didn’t have a healthy dose of sarcasm.

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

I was never going to be the fastest black belt or the best competitor so I am going for the world’s longest blue belt – currently 15 years and counting.

It takes a serious lack of talent to train for so long while not getting any better.

What made you start Martial Arts?

Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, 3 Ninjas and the Karate Kid got me interested in martial arts at a young age although I couldn’t actually train because I lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere. I was a very angry boy and used to beat up my two younger brothers quite a bit so my parents weren’t really supportive of me pursuing martial arts when we moved to a larger town later on.

When I started university my interest was renewed when I found some Pride FC video tapes at a VideoEZY. I had seen the early UFC events but nothing had inspired me to train until I saw Kazushi Sakuraba in action.

I started training BJJ in Geelong and was soon training Muay Thai and boxing six days a week all around Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne. There weren’t really any MMA gyms around in those days and wrestling was hard to come by.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

As I was getting near to completing university I didn’t like the direction my career was heading so as soon as I finished my exams I moved to Japan to train MMA, have a bit of fun and to try and get a job in the MMA industry there.

I bought a camera and all of a sudden I was the only foreign combat sports photographer/journalist in the region and the only foreigner allowed ringside in Japan. I was exceptionally poor for a few years (which was a valuable experience in itself) but then landed some great jobs and covered most of the big fights throughout Asia Pacific.

Following the 2011 Japanese earthquake and the downfall of Pride FC, K-1, Dream, etc. the industry in Japan was in tatters so I lost my job and it was time to come home. Based on my experience in Japan I landed a job with Absolute.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

“Be Here Now.” – You’ll realise that a lot of life’s problems are due to your imagination if you remind yourself of this.

The Serenity Prayer:
“God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.”

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

I grew up on a farm on the outskirts of Hamilton with two younger brothers. We had a TV but it didn’t work for a long time (I think Mum and Dad were lying about that – why would we keep a TV that didn’t work?) and we had to make our own entertainment.

I once made a bow and shot my youngest brother in the back with an arrow. It stuck between his shoulder blades and he fell face first into the dirt with the arrow straight up in the air. I’m not sure which parts of that story are real.

One day we tried to make a stink bomb by gathering all this cow poo and mixing it up in a big bucket with all this other stinky stuff we found around the farm. We ended up just throwing it all at each other and I remember jumping over a fence to try and run away. It was a barbed-wire fence though and I caught my leg on it and it opened up like an over cooked hot dog. I don’t have any scars so I’m not sure if that’s a real story either.

One day I had some friends over and we tied one of my brothers to a pole and left him there all day. I think that story is real. I bullied my brothers a fair bit.

I made a bear trap out a big roll of wire and a tree. The plan was for a bear to get tangled in the wire and then lightning would strike the tree and electrocute the bear. I don’t think we ever caught one.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Shantideva was pretty good:

“May I become at all times, both now and forever,
A protector for those without protection,
A guide for those who have lost their way,
A ship for those with oceans to cross,
A bridge for those with rivers to cross,
A sanctuary for those in danger,
A lamp for those without light,
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter,
And a servant to all in need.”

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

My wife’s cooking. The amount of effort and love she puts into her cooking (while wrangling two kids) is not lost on me and I appreciate it every day.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Recently I’ve really gotten into woodworking with hand tools. I live in a small apartment and have two young kids so I don’t really have the space or time to build much but I enjoy getting my plane irons and chisels really sharp and then shaving my arm hair with them to impress my wife. She pretends that she isn’t impressed but I know she is really into it.

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

I was fortunate enough to travel a lot when I was younger but really appreciate settling down and family life now. Seeing the world is eye opening but there is depth that you can’t experience if you are always travelling and looking for the next experience. I look forward to travelling with my kids when they are old enough though and my wife is Korean so I also really enjoy going there to spend time with family but that doesn’t feel like travel – it’s like another home.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

I was really into Warhammer (that’s a war game with figurines) and Magic the Gathering (that’s a card game) for a while but then my friend burned all his stuff and told me it was the work of Satan. That was all very confusing for 13 year-old Daniel.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

I’m really interested in (primarily Eastern) religion. I struggled a lot with depression and anxiety when I was younger and was becoming quite self-destructive. I didn’t want to keep living like that so I decided to try and sort it out rather than just ignore it or circumvent it.

Eastern religion provided a very direct way to unravel the issues that I was carrying around in my mind.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Those good people who help for the sake of helping and just do what they can to make life better. It takes a lot to give up being self-centered and to truly focus on what good you can do in the world in a way that doesn’t turn back on you and end up being self-serving. That self is a slippery little thing that keeps working it’s way back in there. I publicly aspire to be one of those good people and then privately wonder what’s in it for me.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

I have attempted to acquire many useless talents but I’ve not yet found anything that I’m actually talented in nor managed to make anyone smile yet. The work continues.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favourite? Any funny stories?

I had a growth spurt very early on and was 180 cm tall when I was like 11. I played basketball and football and smashed everyone because I was a giant. Then all the other kids grew up too and it wasn’t fun anymore.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

I really like Krishna Das. He sings Hindu devotional music. Singing Hare Krishna and dancing about with my kids is fun and good experiences can be had if you get into it.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

Be Here Now by Ram Dass totally changed my life.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I’ve been training off and on for 17 years and I’m crap. My advice would be to not take my own advice.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

You’re all part of my dream team. It’s my dream – don’t tell me I can only have 3 people.

“Hahaha…*nervous laugh* Smeagol. Love you, Dan.” – Apryl Eppinger

“If Absolute MMA is what it is, it is also because of Daniel Herbertson. He is a very important piece on the chessboard. Daniel is the queen.” – Thiago Stefanutti

“Is he a black belt in UFC?”- James Walters

“Dan Herbertson, cool supportive genuine mate! Who keeps the team tight! The Bruce Wayne of Absolute MMA “- Moses Bentley

“Without Dan Herbertson, everyone at Absolute MMA would be lost. Every person, staff or member, any gym, national or international. To say he is the heart, soul and brains of Absolute is still somehow a gross understatement. Without him, none of us would have an amazing facility to train in, and I would not have had this opportunity to do what I love for a living, for that I will forever be grateful to him. Beyond that he is one of the most insightful people to talk to, always providing a point of view that I would not have thought of myself. I can’t say enough good things about Dan, he has adorable children, on point carpentry skills, a laser pointer and is always there with his handy knife.”- Amit Narayan

“Daniel is an incredible human. A quiet achiever, he is always willing to help out, no matter how small or big the job is. Dan simply gets stuff done. I can also always count on him for some solid, objective advice. He is also the worlds longest blue belt. I think soon, he may beat the world record, but everyone has to be the best at something, right?!”- Livia Giles

“I have worked with Daniel Herbertson for two and a half years. I think Dan and I get along just fine. Our first trip away together was for the staff holiday. Dan is the general manager of Absolute MMA, anything you need he’ll help you with. He is a genuine person.”- Laos Toohey

“Herbertson is the wisest man in the entire world. Somehow, he still cops the most s**t at Absolute MMA.” – Darren Gn

Dan is a man of many skills, one of them being able to speak and read Japanese and (!) clocking the longest years as a BJJ blue belt that I know of anyone haha. Jokes aside, although very behind the scenes, genuinely he’s one of the very reasons Absolute is as successful as it is and runs as smoothly as it does.”- Tina Trinh

“Dan is a legend, always look after his friends and keep ample supply of squat racks and kettlebells. Thanks, Dan!”- Stanley Huang

“Mr Daniel Herbertson one of the people that I look up to as a human being. He is an extraordinary man, he runs and manages a business, he has high-level skills in jiu-jitsu, trained and fought MMA, very creative of his craft which is photography and is a very loving father. Also, Dan has a kind heart in so many ways. But one of the memories that I can’t forget about his kindness is that I was in Absolute 6 years ago I was very shy and very quiet because I couldn’t speak English fluently. Then there is this person Mr Dan trying to reach out to me help me in so many ways. He inspired me and guide me to become a better MARTIAL ARTIST. Very grateful and blessed to meet Mr Daniel Herbertson in my journey.”- Luke Catubig

“Buddha has a Daniel Herbertson poster hanging in his bedroom.”- Richard Lattemagi

“Dan is always there with a welcoming attitude and a smile. And what a beautiful family he has! This guy works at the best Martial Arts gym but I don’t see him on the mats?! Well… Nobody is perfect. “- Cris Soares

Yes, I did and the lessons learned are: never ever again 😀

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Be open-minded, ask questions and try to learn as much as possible.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat, a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part of your dream team and why?

Thiago, Simon, and Jeremy because they are way too old to run so they’ll definitely get killed before me 😀

“When he first started training with me, he had a very intense judo style, very stiff. Every punch, every kick was stiff. Now, he is much more relaxed and I can see him in the UFC in the future. He has had a few striking fights, and a few MMA fights. He’s a great athlete, good listener and dedicated to his sport. Future UFC champion!” – Coach Laos Toohey

“Even though he’s French and nearly gouged one of my eyes out, he’s still one of my favourite humans.”- Oliver Smith

“He’s a freaking monster.”- Thiago Stefanutti

“Just when we finally got rid of one Frenchy this guy shows up. First time I met him was in MMA sparring, didn’t know anything about him, we locked up in a clinch and I felt very safe as usual, nek minit I’m in WWE survivor series getting tossed high in the air before crashing to the mat with this unit of a Frenchman coming down on top of me. Rumour has it he knew some judo. Hated him ever since?“- Jeremy Wharerau

“I train with Kevin every week and he scares the crap out of me because I talk sh*t to him. But there are also always moments when we are laughing our heads off.” – Nathan Heddle

“Team captain hits hard, trains hard and parties hard. Great bloke and I might even give him my shorts one day.” – Fei Yen

“I known Albert since he was 19 years old, he started with me at Young Bulls from Day One, introduced by his good friend Anthony Trejo. He came into my gym as ‘Fat Albert’ and was playing footy back then. Then he started training Muay Thai, a couple of years went by and he wanted to fight. Competing from amateur to the A grade professional. Won two WBC state title belts, he had around 30+ fights now. He is a hard-working young man and is always willing to learn new things. He trains with me here and then went to Thailand for 6 months at Kiatphontip fighting all the high-level fighters on Max Muaythai in Pattaya and he is the first person to coach the Timorese team. A few years ago, he won bronze medallist at the world amateur Muaythai championship in Bangkok. Albert is like a son to me. He got charisma, he’s a funny dude, putting funny faces on Instagram.” – Coach Laos Toohey

“Esse paneleiro 24 e’ com certeza uma das pessoas mais legais da AMMA, sempre alegre e ajudando a todos. Como lutador semprer faz um grande show e tem o respeito de todos Meu irmao preto.”- Coach Thiago Stefanutti

“Whoever says “those that can’t do teach” has clearly never met Alby. Gun pad holder, amazing mentor, and inspiration to everyone at the CBD. Blessed to have him in my corner.”- Georgia Verry

MEET THE TEAM: IMANTHA ALAHAKOON

Imantha Alahakoon, affectionately known as Iman, is our valued casual staff member on desk at reception, stepping in to save us on weekends and when all seems lost! Training primarily in Mixed Martial Arts out of Absolute MMA Collingwood, Iman loves a good chicken parma as much as he loves riding around Melbourne on his beloved motorbike. He’s a genuine soul who loves his metal music, and is someone we genuinely appreciate stepping into shifts when no one can. Read on to find out more about Iman!

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Ironman / Chocolate Man – I dont even know

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Participating in the Greg Jackson seminar. That opened my mind up to a new way to think in the cage/gym.

What made you start Martial Arts?

My best friend. He did Taekwondo and I wanted to give it a shot. Did it for about 3 years then quit … to do tennis.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I’ve worked in IT and still do. I started working at Absolute as I wanted to change industries and was given an opportunity to work in the gym as a casual. I wanted the change because sitting on my ass 8 hours a day is not something I fancy.

Favorite workout/walkout song?

I cant name just one song. Right now there are a couple of songs I smash off Architects new album that get me real gee’d to train.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

KISS – Keep it simple, stupid.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favorite memory from when you were younger?

Mum dropping me to my best mates house and finishing Pokemon Fire Red in like 9 hours. Still my best achievement to date.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Not being in the rat race – Travelling the world and training.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

My mum. She brought me up as a single mum, did everything she could for me and I’m forever grateful for having such a strong, determined woman in my life. She’s stood by a lot of the stupid shit I’ve done and helped me open my eyes and grow the f**k up. Love ya ma!

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Hanging out with the misso or mates and depending on Melbourne’s awesome weather, taking my bike out through the twisties.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

An eagle – you get to fly. Who doesn’t wanna be able to do that shit?

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

I’ve actually done no proper traveling. I do want to go to Hong Kong to get my leg tattoo finished off and then do some exploring through Asia and then North America and Europe. So … I wanna go kinda everywhere.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I look like a 10 year old without a beard.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Well, I was born in Sri Lanka and moved to Sydney when I was like 3 years old. I moved to Melbourne almost 3 years ago now, with my ex girlfriend who had a job opportunity here. I’d been to Melbourne twice before this all happened, the last time I told myself I’d move here one day so I kinda said ‘f**k it’. Quit my job, told mum I was gonna move to Melbourne and yeah, drove from Sydney to Melbourne with all my stuff in my car.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

This wasn’t when I was a teenager, but I was about 9/10 years old and in Sri Lanka on holiday with Mum. I was playing outside with a friend and we saw a snake go into a house – so naturally we threw rocks at it (how dumb, right?) and lo and behold the thing started chasing us. My mate was on a bike so he started peddling along and we (I was a chubby little kid) gapped it to the house. We had a security person who had to let people in and out so I’m yelling telling them to let me in, spamming the bell and they take their sweet ass time…I’ve hated snakes since. I also hate spiders, but that’s another story and this time I was the victim.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Cars/Bikes – My best mates dad was a race car driver and a mechanic so that was something I got into in my teens (Also Need for Speed Underground 2 helped, heaps). It’s probably one of a few things I’d still love to get into. From my basic mechanical knowledge, fixing and troubleshooting things is really satisfying.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

My face – it looks funny.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

Today. I just ZipPay’d close to $600 of new training gear. Not sure if I’m happy or not though …

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favorite? Any funny stories?

I did tennis for a little bit. Then skateboarding. I was sh*t at both to be fair.

Have you ever worked a job not in the fitness/martial arts industry? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

Yep, still do. I’ve worked in a few different IT roles. Being a project manager was probably the most involved role I’ve had though. The biggest thing this role has taught me is to be resilient. When things go wrong, you’re the first person people are abusing and when things go right you may get a thanks if you’re lucky and also not taking things to heart.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Rice Queen. It was the place one of my tattoo artists recommended to me and it is LEGIT.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Ace Ventura.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

The Barefoot Investor. I read this book and then a week or two later I went to Ducati and bought a brand new motorbike (Imantha, you stupid). It’s true though; The heart wants what it wants.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Stick with it and don’t give up. Also to do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Wrestling and not TKD.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Simon – His experience in the army would help heaps and I imagine he could build a shelter or at least try.

Amit – A black/chocolate person is the first to die in any zombie/horror movie so if there are two of us, we can work together and let someone else get eaten. #blacktics

Joe – Wouldn’t Panic! at the disco, let alone in a Zombie apocalypse. Skilled in the art of closing doors.

“Iman is the whitest Sri Lankan that has ever existed. His personality can be best described as manifestation of that ‘S’ thing every kid drew in year 7. Despite never having played a game of cricket, he has somehow found a way to bat far, far beyond his average, and would easily put Steve Smith to shame…again.” – Mithunnan Saseetharan

“Iman broke my ankle and I will forever remind him about this event. On another note, Iman is a great team mate who I enjoy partnering up with as he has a lot of patience to explain drills to me when I don’t understand them after being told over 20 times what to do. I always have a good laugh with Iman and hope he doesn’t break my ankle again.” – Lisa Kyriacou

“Iman is the world’s oldest teenager, usually found doing push ups while listening to my chemical romance, his training soundtrack is questionable. MMA? He’s panicking at the wrong disco.”- Joe Boobyer

“Imantha May be little but his heart is BIG! Always provides a big smile, some help if you need it but more importantly high levels of banter! He’s a ray of fucking sunshine behind his emo angst. He’s the panic to my disco ?“- Marisa Amaya

Read on to find out more about Apryl!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Making the Philippines National Team in Jiu-jitsu.

What made you start Martial Arts?

I credit coach Livia Gluchowska for the introduction and the addiction.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I’ve been a member since 2012 when the mats were yellow marshmallows and I’d wanted to work with the gym for the longest time. Prior to working with the gym I have worked numerous jobs in retail and admin. And always been athlete on the side.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Still doing what I love, rolling, working with great people and hopefully a black belt.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Pretty lame but have to say the people I roll and train with. They tend to be a mix of friends from around the world and other teams and also from Absolute. Picking one wouldn’t do justice to the wealth of knowledge and things I have experienced in the sport.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I have a bunch of samurai Star Wars action figures in a display cabinet, yup I have action figures and loooots of lego.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

Pretty sure a goth athlete was something that confused many people around me as I grew up.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Dogs, my dog and other people’s dogs. Pretty sure they are the greatest creatures on this planet.

Have you ever worked a “normal” job (not in the fitness/martial arts industry)? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

Yes, many…don’t invest your time in meaningless jobs. Do one you actually love or enjoy…seriously, it makes a huge difference. It took me years of asking but the gym finally hired me. Now I am really happy being in a place I love being in.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Terminator 2, still no other movie like it today.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker.

“Apryl is such an asset to Absolute MMA. She selflessly gives her time to others and is always there for me on and off the mat. I seriously couldn’t ask for more in a human being.”- Kim Cousins

“I owe 100% of my friendships through the gym to Apryl. 70% is just her being an awesome friend and the other 30% are people who talk to me because I know her. 10/10 would recommend as a buddy”- Sarah Wahjudi

“She does alright for a blue belt.”- Daniel Howard

“Apryl is a talented grappler who is loved by her friends and adored by wild animals everywhere. In August 2014, I saw her befriend a pack of dingos in the Otways. The Alpha clearly respected her killer instincts. I highly recommend learning from Apryl if you’d like to learn wicked jitz or how to talk to animals.”- Han Wahjudi

“She is a savage on the mat and an absolute epic human being off the mat. One of the nicest humans you could meet… she puts in countless hours with the girls team and leads from the front. What an asset to have on the amma team!”- Nick Metcalfe

“Apryl is not only a beast to roll with, she’s truly one of the most supportive and friendly people in the gym. She’s always willing to help you with drilling, and she will always push you to be the best you can on the mat. She’s part of the reason we have such an awesome culture for the women doing Jiu Jitsu at Absolute.” – Sarah Sinclair

“Apryl has been back to Estonia more than I have in the last five years.”- Richard Lattemagi

“Apryl is one of the most kind and scary women you can find on BJJ in Australia.
Dedicated student, coach and good friend she is always able to help our teammates.
I think she will be one of the best female coaches in Australia in the future.
I like Apryl as a person because she is real and if she is unhappy with something she will tell why. I like people like that.” – Coach Thiago Stefanutti

MEET THE TEAM: LAOS TOOHEY

Coach Laos “The Asian Bull” Toohey is one of the most highly respected striking coaches in Australia today, coaching over 35 champions in a variety of disciplines at every level including an I.S.K.A. Super Middleweight World Champion. Toohey was named Star Kickboxing Trainer of the Year 1998 and Kickboxing Trainer of the Century in 2000. Despite being a Muay Thai coach, Toohey also loves a cheeky roll here there with our BJJ crew. Read on to find out more about this absolute legend!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

There’s a lot of things I’ve done in my life…everything I do has turned into gold.

What made you start Martial Arts?

I was inspired by Bruce Lee at the age of 13, my Aunty took me to the theatre, the movie we watched was ‘Enter the Dragon’, Bruce Lee vs Chuck Norris. From that day on, I wanted to be a martial artist. Everybody knows who Bruce Lee is!

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

Before I was involved with the gym, I ran my own gym called Young Bulls. I ran that gym for 15 years plus, teaching Muay Thai, Boxing and also Taekwondo. We used to also practise BJJ there. When I closed Young Bulls, I met a gentleman named Simon Carson, Simon I met through Anthony and Albert who trained at my gym. Then I got asked by Simon and Dan, “Do I want a job teaching at Absolute MMA CBD?” and I worked for this club ever since. After six months I got promoted to head coach of Muay Thai at Absolute MMA CBD.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Oh God…hahaha. I can’t remember! “I got the power”!

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

My memories growing up…I never thought I’d be a fighter, or a martial arts instructor. I lived next door to a Muay Thai gym, called Muay Laos Gym. Everyday I would hang out after school there, sometime I got asked to do some sparring just to earn a penny. That’s how I started becoming a martial artist, with Bruce Lee as my idol. Those were some of my favourite times.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself in five years still a head coach but not involved with the fight game. I’ll always want to teach classes, maybe I’ll teach kids self defence. Maybe I retire.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

One meal….man I can’t say anything…what my favourite…Asian food. I pick Asian food.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

Wow. I would still be working in a factory somewhere, or being a bartender. I used to love being a bartender.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I like to relax by listening to soft music, put my feet up on the couch. That’s it.

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

Asia, it reminds me of where I came from. Spain is nice too, and Italy is good.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I’m always a funny guy! I’m firm but I’m fair. I make people laugh.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

When I first came to Australia I was living in Sydney, then my parents moved to Albury Wondonga. I got a scholarship for my taekwondo in Melbourne, then I moved in Melbourne. Melbourne is my home now, I been here since 1990. That’s a long time.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

Sh*t, I can’t remember.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

I love playing soccer. I always wanted to play in the red team when I was a teenager, we won a premiership when I was a teenager. My uncle was a professional soccer player. I grew up with that.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to my parents, they worked so hard to bring me here for a better life. I’ll always look up to them. Made sure we grew up with everything.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

Learn how to sing. I did terrible, Muriel! I’m learning how to sing from Pok.

Have you ever worked a “normal” job (not in the fitness/martial arts industry)? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

I used to be a storeman, and bartender. I learn how to drive a forklift, learned how to make cocktails…I don’t think I remember that anymore.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Pho in Springvale, one of my favourite place. I always go eat there after a good workout.

What’s your favourite music genre and musicians? Why do you enjoy their music?

Oh sh*t. I collected a lot of ACDC and Bon Jovi back in the old days. I like to listen to them. All the 80s music. Bob Marley is relaxing. No violent music. MC Hammer, no violent hip hop like these days. Like every gym I go to, 50 cent and all this. Music shouldn’t be like that. Ahhhh, I don’t wanna talk about it.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

The one, the one with Al Pacino….the gangster one. Scarface!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Always be good, no matter what you do. Try to do your best, lose or draw you are already the winner. Anytime you step in the ring, win or lose you’re already a champion.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

I would pick Albert Xavier, young Darren Gn and the fun lady who is always helping me, Emilie.

“Toohey has elevated all our striking games to the next level. May the legend of the Asian Bull and the Three Wongs live on.” – Andre Nguyen

“The second best lefty that I know (the best is me, of course!). Toohey is an awesome coach, knows everything about martial arts, and has an endless supply of funny nicknames. So lucky to be able to train with you!!” – Yvonne Chow

“I’ve been to a few mix martial arts gym’s in Melbourne, but Absolute MMA was the one for me. My first class I attended was with Toohey! He’s an awesome coach and even a friend, always making me work hard, supports and motivates me when needed!
Always leaving his classes with a smile on my face!”- Arinah Zain

“Toohey is the most loveable man at Absolute MMA. He also has a wealth of experience and knowledge in martial arts and life in general if you can just learn to decipher what on earth he is talking about”- Darren Gn

“Toohey is like a fun, loving Asian father who looks after his kids in Muay Thai. He is very patient and treats everyone from beginners to pros equally. He loves a good laugh and makes his classes fun to go to. He is passionate about the sport and always has everyone’s best interest at heart. “Bob your head! Bob your head!”.”- Carmen He

“Toohey is the man. He knows the ins and outs of western boxing and traditional Muay Thai, chuck in some high level spinning shit too. Put all those together and you have an atomic bomb of fight knowledge. Whether it’s life advice or fight advice his words always ring true and deep. Even when he’s calling you a fat lady boy. Much love.”- Liam McNeill

“Toohey is a true role model, highly respected.”- Tas Dionisakos

“Toohey is one of the best coaches that I have ever had. He pays attention to every one of us and corrects us when we’re doing something wrong. He’s an easy person to talk to and he’s fun to be with. ♥️”- Amy Ong

“Honestly there’s so many ways to describe Toohey, even his laugh deserves its own recognition. He’s like the cool teacher I wish I had but never really did because unfortunately my teachers had the misfortune of teaching me maths ? .
But anyways, It’s great to see that Toohey is someone so passionate and committed to teaching a sport he truly lives for and I hope all future students will be inspired by him as I have.” – Leanne Huynh

“This little sifu is full of wisdom and has a talent for bringing out the best in his students. He spends hours and hours and is truly passionate about passing down his vast knowledge and experience down to the next generation of strikers. Loves to crack a joke even though no-one understands them and brings smiles and energy to his classes.” – Fei Yen

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Being invited to Liverpool, UK to compete on GrappleFest.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I was living in Adelaide, working full time and had visited Absolute MMA a few times. So after training for 3 years I decided to move to Melbourne and try to train BJJ full time.

Favorite workout/walkout song?

Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede

Mantra/Quote to live by?

No worries.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favorite memory from when you were younger?

Watching the TV show Gladiator with my older brothers, then trying to re-create the challenges and beat the hell out of each other.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully still training and teaching BJJ or running a gym.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Joe Rogan, because he’s 50 years old, jacked and still gets sh*t done.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Burritos.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

I’d probably be hating my life.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Listen to podcasts, watch movies or play Xbox.

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

San Diego, there is good weather all year round, good food and great gyms to train at.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

One time I drank an old Russian guy under the table in Kazakhstan…

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I originally grew up in country SA which was a lot of fun, luckily my family moved to Adelaide before I was a teenager as there’s not a whole lot of entertainment going on in the country. I moved to Melbourne to train full time in 2015.

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

Fortunately I’ve repressed the memories of doing anything too weird.

Can you think of a common inspirational quote that you completely disagree with and why?

“If you can’t handle me at my worst, then you don’t deserve me at my best” I feel like this is a self centered way of saying, “I’m entitled to be an asshole, deal with it”.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Living a lifestyle that makes every day enjoyable.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Anyone who is motivated and not lazy.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

After a few beers myself and John Lentz share the same useless talent…those who know, know.

When was the last time you did something new for the first time and what was it?

I tried to learn Spanish a few weeks ago…it’s a work in progress.

Have you done other sports besides martial art and which teams/athletes are your favorite? Any funny stories?

I played football until my late teens, I had the opportunity to start wrestling when I was about 15 but didn’t want to because none of my friends did wrestling, now all I ever want to do is wrestle/ train BJJ.

Have you ever worked a job not in the fitness/martial arts industry? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

I’ve managed liquor stores and I still bar tend occasionally, I learned that all drunk people are annoying when you’re working, doesn’t matter if they are friendly drunks or aggressive drunks.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

Stop Splitting the Difference by Chris Voss.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

The Departed.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Don’t roll with Craig Jones…it’ll hurt.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

1. Mikael Yahaya- Because you always need someone who runs slower than you do to avoid getting eaten.
2. Oliver Smith- Because he’s super tall and can get all the stuff that’s too high for me to reach.
3. Tim Trevail- I just want him there in the hope that he’ll get eaten alive and I can watch.

“Tom’s progress since joining Absolute MMA has been crazy to witness. Not only from seeing his progress through working with him for strength and conditioning, but seeing him roll on the mats. He’s someone who always strives to properly understand exactly what it is he’s doing and why he’s doing it, both in the gym and on the mat. That attitude has led to him being quite the coach and Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. He’s someone I respect greatly and someone I always look forward to talking to. On top of that, he’s currently on the road to 100 kilos, his drunk stories are full of debauchery and ridiculous… I’ve also born witness to too much evidence of the debauchery… Anyhow, Tom is great and I hope he’s eating a pizza as he’s reading this.” – Amit Narayan

“Tom is a gentleman and a scholar. He’s always been a monster on the mats, and recently he’s been a very welcome addition to the admin team at St Kilda. Love your work, Tonny. And your chest.” – Oliver Smith

“I don’t really have anything nice to say about Tom Everett apart from the fact my favorite time with him is when he leaves the gym.”- Adam Jones

“Some say it was his face for radio that led Tom to start training in jiu jitsu, others say that it was his inability to win schoolyard karate matches. Whatever the reason, we’re now lucky to have this gentleman on the mats with us. He’s a wicked training partner, and all round top guy to have in the gym. I’ve no doubt he’ll go far in jiu jitsu, with his training ethic and skill levels already driving him to the top of the rooster division in Australia.”- Tim Trevail

“Tom is one of the friendliest people at the gym, who also has really nice BJJ and is one of my favourite training partners who knows exactly how to smash me up. He is also knows for his perfect hair and his chicken legs… but that’s actually Amit’s fault.”- Livia Gluchowska

“Tom Everett is a symbol of hope for skinny weak men everywhere. A hope that one day, with hard training and perseverance they too might be able to defend themselves against a 14 year old boy or a small woman.” – Craig Jones

MEET THE TEAM: JAMES WALTERS

Meeting people from all over the world and making friends. Also, filming on top of a mountain with Stuart Cooper in Thailand was pretty awesome.

What made you start Martial Arts?

I wanted to learn how to put my body to good use.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA?

Sean Le G and I go way back, and when I started jiu jitsu, I asked where he trained in Melbourne, he said “Absolute MMA in the CBD with Thiago”, so that’s why I train here. Then I started teaching classes when Craig was away, then that became an ongoing job, plus I spent more time here than my previous full time job. Why not!

Mantra/Quote to live by?

You health is your wealth.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Reverse seared grass fed rib-eye steak.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Ride my bike, cook and get obsessed with random things.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

I am already an animal, but if I could choose something else it would be a wedge tailed eagle.

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

Anywhere with good food, people, environment, culture, and jiu jitsu.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

When I was 18, I booked a return ticket to Nairobi in Kenya, and went there for 3 months on my own with no other plans. The flight agent didn’t want to sell me the ticket because she said she had never heard of anyone who had done that before and was worried for my safety. During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

“Jimmy Walters is a real true friend of mine, from the days when we were at uni. Now he beats me up but I still love him. He’s going to be a world champion.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“James Walters is just an exceptional human being. Highly dedicated, motivated, persistent and relentless in pursuit of his goals, which he has many. All of those traits would be exceptional by themselves, but when you attach them to a guy that’s humorous, and always looking out for his friends and teammates, you realise just how one of a kind he is. I truly believe that he’s only scratched the surface in terms of what he’ll accomplish, not only in Jiu Jitsu, but in life. Which is saying a lot, considering what he’s already accomplished. I could happily go on and on about Jimbolinho Swolters, so I will, he’s one of the funniest and warmest individuals in the gym. His recent addition as a coach at Absolute has just made the coaching staff stronger and will ensure that Absolute MMA will remain at the top for many more years to come!” – Amit Narayan

“Jimbo Swolternidis is strong by name and strong by nature. Even though all his stories end in tragedy, he’s definitely got my vote for man (and chin) of the year. Love ya Jimbo.” – Oliver Smith

“My favourite photo used to be Craig choking James. Now it’s James armbarring Craig. #TrueStoryBro”- Richard Lattemagi

“James is a super energetic, intelligent, eager to help, hunk of a man. He is very driven to train and compete at the highest level, if you roll with him on the mats, be prepared to go to war!
James never makes excuses, is always friendly and generally has an infectious positive attitude. We are all lucky that we have a Swolters on deck! He’s an ok books, one of these days I’m gonna get him, by any means necessary.” – Tim Baker
