MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: STEPHANIE SCIPIONE

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Stephanie Scipione, one of our white belt ladies at Melbourne CBD who also undergoes personal training with Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Daniel Howard. An avid lover of Korean dramas and television, Stephanie learns Korean in her spare time when she’s not working as a Financial Crimes Analyst at NAB. Always supportive of those who are just getting starting in the martial arts world, Steph is a kind and welcome presence in the gym and we are glad to have her around! Read on to find out more about Steph.

Martial Arts/Sports: I did Muay Thai for about 2 years before converting over to Jiu-jitsu back in 2016.

How did you get into the sport?

I had been training with Dan for ages, and every day Thiago would pester me about switching to the dark side. Eventually, I did a few classes with him out of curiosity and was instantly (heel)hooked.

What are your immediate training goals?

I think generally to have a training goal you should probably actually train…that might be a good start. 2020 is right around the corner, so new year new me? I’m the Haley’s Comet of jiujitsu, so I think it would be nice to actually show up to class.

What are your goals for the next five years?

I’d like to say “get my blue belt”, but I think we all know that probably won’t happen LOL.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Because it’s like a family. Everyone is super supportive and always happy to jump in and lend a hand if I’m struggling with anything. I’ve made so many lifelong friends at Absolute, I couldn’t imagine training anywhere else! Also, because Thiago serenades me every time I walk into the gym.

What is your favourite move?

That weird no-arm triangle that Nathan taught me once. Its always my go-to move whenever I get stacked (always).

Favourite workout/walkout song?

I’m one of those really weird people that don’t listen to music when they work out. I will accept full criticism of this fact.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Showpony, because nobody can pronounce my last name, Haley’s Comet because I only show up to class once a year, Ma Che because of Thiago.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Binge-watching Korean dramas on Netflix.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m born and raised in Melbourne, and only this year did I finally get on a plane outside Australia. As for an interesting story: One time a goat broke into my primary school and I think it was the best day of my life. Still to this day, I have no idea where that goat came from.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I seriously admire people who get out there and succeed despite whatever setbacks are thrown their way.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Mrs Zans Kitchen for the best malatang I’ve ever had.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Just get in there and DO IT. Don’t worry about what people will think of you because chances are they are too busy trying not to die to care about how awful your guard is.

“Stephanie is an angel, always smiling and if she ain’t it’s because she’s lifting heavy with Coach Dan Howard.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“Let’s see you back in the gi.” – Patrick Lim

“Steph is a beast and I love having her on the Jiu Jitsu mats. I hope she comes back to regular training soon!”- Kim Cousins

“Steph is super kind towards everyone she meets and has always been nice until you make fun of her choices in anime, which she will debate you to the death. It’s always great to bump into her at the gym and see her giant smile and have a chat.” – Kevin Lau

“Each year, without fail, I get reminded of the time I armbarred Steph with a smile on my face on Facebook. That’s what friendship is all about haha! Steph is one of the sweetest and friendliest girls in the gym and always brightens up my day. Love you girl!”- Yvonne Chow

“If Absolute MMA was a card game Scipione would be the joker card, she was an employee, she did striking, sometimes she does Jits, and the most important she squats every single day with Howard. She is always happy and ready to complain about her workout. Another interesting thing about her is she can only train BJJ in the summer.”- Thiago Stefanutti

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Melbourne. Born and bred Northside. I was that little Macedonian girl dressed to the nines in some sort of frou frou confection, climbing trees, falling out of said trees and punching boys if they came near me.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Funny, smart tall people.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I love Streat in Cromwell St. Excellent coffee and my most favourite is the Streat breakfast. I yum that up!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Please don’t wait until you are ancient to start Muay Thai.

“Mary will always be the first person to say hello to you in the gym. She will also be the first person to tell you to pull your head in. She is ‘what you see is what you get’ but is incredibly supportive and always has the right advice. Mary is a gun at everything! She is either kicking arse in Muay Thai, lifting weights or swimming, sometimes twice a day. She is intelligent, witty, strong and just a general bad ass in life, on the mats and out there listening to metal bands. There’s something about Mary.”- Kylie Baldwin

“First of all, JESUS WEPT! Secondly, Mary is one crazy lady and I can’t imagine having her any other way. She trains harder than anyone, complains harder than anyone and quite frankly I want to be her when I grow up. She has become a great friend and we are so lucky to have this sweet angel of death as part of our team. Yeah the Panj!”- Marisa Amaya

“JESUS WEPT it’s the doctor! Kicking massive blokes to a slayer soundtrack while shouting obscenities is the name of the game here. Lunch time punch ons are Mary’s bread and butter, be careful crossing Hoddle street at approx 12.15pm, that’s all I’m saying.”- Joe Boobyer

“A larger than life character around the Collingwood Gym. When not smashing pads in the gym, you’ll see Mary supporting her teammates at the local fight shows.” – David Lescai

“The original Spring Chicken! Mary is dedicated to her fitness, loves kickboxing, loves her fitness, and is a lot of fun to be around! She is a rare student, not many are as dedicated as she is, and she is always supportive of the fighters in the gym.”- Laos Toohey

“Mary has the same amount of energy when she’s at the gym at both 6:30am and 6:30pm. It’s not right. It’s just not right. It does make me laugh though.” – Oliver Smith

“The example to give your Mum about how it’s ridiculous she thinks she’s too old for Muay Thai. One badass woman.”- Georgia Verry

“Mary is one of the toughest chicks I know. She puts in the hard work, shows great support to her friends and team mates, and takes no BS from anyone. By the way, have you seen those push-ups and pull-ups she smashes?”- Carmen He

“Although most of what Mary says isn’t PG enough for an internet post, Mary is one of the most determined committed clients I have had the pleasure of training I’ve the years. Horns up.”- Nat Stiles

“Mary is one of the toughest SOB’s walking around the gym. She’s in shape that many people in their 30’s wished they’d be and she’s the perfect example of what happens when you keep your heart young and martial arts in your life! Always great fun training with the Iron Lady!”- Taru Siipola

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: ADRIAN MANNIX

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Adrian “Axe” Mannix, a regular face in our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu morning sessions and marathon runner. Occupation: Safety Director

Martial Arts/Sports: BJJ / Ultra Marathons

How did you get into the sport?

I utilised BJJ as cross training for when I played gridiron and loved it. Since then, gridiron has stopped but BJJ has filled the void.

What are your immediate training goals?

BJJ – Just to keep learning, and getting better at the sport. There is nothing like Jits fitness and it has a very important place in my physical and mental training plans. I’m also planning to run the HURT 100 miler in January 2020. Fingers crossed.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Keep the dream alive: It would be great to compete in BJJ again on a regular basis. Mentally I want to break myself at the Tahoe 200 miler.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Absolute MMA has bought some amazing people into my life. I’m very grateful for that.

What is your favourite move?

Peruvian necktie or Darce choke.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Move up by eloquor.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I love to get over to Hawaii, it my favourite holiday destination and the people are amazing.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in Tassie and when I was 12, whilst on a fishing trip when I fell 20 meters off a cliff on woody island requiring stitches to reconnect my ear. I moved to Melbourne when I was 19 for study/work and never left.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Peter Florenini – I just can’t believe this guy isn’t dead yet. Always a great attitude and tougher than an old leather boot. We all can learn from Peter.
David Goggins – We have a tendency to run away from the truth. When things are not working, it is easy to blame this or that. In order to emerge stronger on the other side, we need to accept our faults.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Teriyaki Chicken (could be the best ever) from Yoshi in South Yarra. You’re welcome.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

You don’t need to kill everybody to have a good workout. Training partners can be friends too.

“Adrian is one of those guys that you just have to push to train, he lives a very sedentary life style, never quite doing enough sport and his questionable diet of KFC for breakfast, lunch and dinner has resulted in his numerous chins…..no one said ever. Tragically he is a great guy, loyal, committed to self development and the development of others with a strong moral compass and as about authentic as you can get.”- Dean Burgess

“What the hell does this guy eat? Rolling with him is like rolling with a metal vice! And to make matters worse he can chase me down no matter how far I run! Lucky he’s such a good guy I guess ?”- Anton Harrison Kern

“He helped me HEAPS, he actually put in a lot of time and effort into the whole morning crew over in St Kilda. Without him, a lot of the coloured belts wouldn’t have them. Genuinely caring, selfless and great teacher. Super patient and has time for everyone.”- Meesh Hall

“I looked in his gym bag once and it was filled with lucky charms…rabbits feet, four leave clovers, horse shoes all sorts of stuff…” – Greg Carrol

Occupation: Membership Manager for a Non Profit Company.

Martial Arts/Sports: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Enjoy watching AFL)

How did you get into the sport?

I got choked out by a 15 year old Chinese-American girl while I was a grown man so that pretty much got me hooked!

What are your immediate training goals?

Not getting choked out by anymore 15 year old kids and hoping to compete in the adult section before the end of the year.

What are your goals for the next five years?

To log as many hours on the mats as I can, become the most Australian person you have ever met (more Aussie than Richard Lättemägi) and to travel to as many foreign BJJ clubs as possible.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The family vibe/ The ridiculously high quality of instructors/training partners and the lack of 15 year old Chinese-American kids with the desire to choke me.

Hit me baby one more time is THE walkout song.

I’m originally from Dublin, Ireland. Have lived in the USA, Canada and the UK in recent years. A couple of years and several visas later I am finally here for good!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I genuinely admire people who have the discipline to keep their s**t together even when the wheels are falling off. There is so much to be said for just getting on with things!

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Limp Briskit in Collingwood is one of my faves simply for the awful pun. Other than that, Lamb on Brunswick is going to send me to an early grave!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Your Ninjutsu instructor definitely would NOT beat up that skinny Brazilian fella in the pirated copy of UFC 1!

“Graeme is a man after my own heart; loves his food, puns and to travel with jiu jitsu. He is quite simply one of the nicest guys around.”- Tim Baker

“Graeme is a soft spoken KILLER! A well travelled gentleman and a scholar. A true Renaissance man, Graeme is a bard, a salesman, a fighter and a lover. Very generous with his time. More recently he’s also managed to convince his better half to train at Absolute MMA. What a power couple.” – Richard Lattemagi

“Graeme is a super nice bloke who is always willing to learn and help out others on the mat.”- Cooper Burnham

“Graeme is a pleasure to have in class. He squeezes sessions in whenever he can and uses his time on the mat wisely. Good luck with your jiu jitsu journey. Looking forward to another roll.”- Oliver Smith

“Graeme is a great training partner, always happy and helpful. He likes throwing a joke while crushing your face on the ground. Although from our gym in Wimbledon to Melbourne, it does feel like the guy is following me.”- Juliette Brillet

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: EYLEM MUSTAFOFF

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Eylem Mustafoff, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student, tax consultant and nail artist at I Scream Nails! When she is not making beautiful, inspired nail art on the hands of Melbourne, Eylem is training hard with our grapplers on the mats. She always brings a positive energy to the gym and is a valued member of our female team. Read on to find out more about Eylem!

How did you get into the sport?

Watching the ‘My Boyfriend Teaches Me Jiu Jitsu’ YouTube video by Jenna Marbles made me really want to try it. I spoke to a friend that trained at a martial arts gym and told him I wanted to start BJJ. He discouraged me, making me feel like I wasn’t good enough or fit enough to start. (It’s okay, we’re not friends anymore haha). Fast forward a couple of years, I mentioned it in passing to another friend and her response was ‘Let’s do it!’

What are your immediate training goals?

At the moment, I’m focusing on becoming comfortable with the person I am on and off the mat. The rest will come when I’m ready.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Get a bit of colour on my belt and compete at least once!

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The people – coaches, staff and the friends I’ve made. I always feel accepted and welcome.

What is your favourite move?

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (the original – I pretend the remake doesn’t exist).

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Lose Yourself by Eminem always gets me pumped (and that goes for all of my Eminem favourites). I also think that walking out to Pass That Dutch by Missy Elliot would be both amazing and hilarious.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

General nickname/gaming name: Lemlem (or just Lem). Potential fight name: ‘Eyleminator’ but I have to start eliminating first. Work in progress!

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Nail art, gaming, reading and writing.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I was born and raised in Melbourne, so nothing exciting there. Growing up, I spent most of my time swimming, trying to be at the top of my class at school and challenging people to arm wrestles. My name means protest in Turkish, so that’s pretty cool!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to people that are strong, but aren’t afraid to be genuine and vulnerable. I love hearing about a person’s journey, their passions and what makes them who they are. I can’t look up to someone that isn’t kind or relatable.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I love going to China Red because I like dumplings and ordering from screens. When I’m not being anti social, Empress of China and Shanghai Street work well too!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Go to class with an open mind and be ready to learn. And don’t psych yourself out – you’ll be fine!

“Eylem started training in the Introduction to BJJ classes over 12 months ago. From day 1 she was always positive and happy and willing to give it her best in every session. Watching Eylem improve and advance to the All Levels classes at lunch time has been my proudest coaching moment to date.
Thanks for being such a star!”- Oliver Smith

“Eylem is one of those people when you learn more about them you get a lot of surprises. She does these really cool mini art works on nails. This to me shows patients and an eye for detail. That aside she’s very supportive of others in the team and is willing to give some thing a try. Even outside her comfort zone. I hope to continue seeing her push herself outside the comfort zone even more ?”- Apryl Eppinger

“I was lucky enough to teach Eylem in a few intro classes, she has a wonderful smile that makes teaching easy.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“Eylem is one of those those people whom you spend a day with and you feel like you’ve known forever. Can’t wait to get our schedules aligned so we can train together.” – Alison Loft

Occupation: Litigation Paralegal

Martial Arts/Sports: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

How did you get into the sport?

I have always been obsessed with the UFC and Bellator, and spending almost every Sunday watching fights I got the itch. I wanted to be in the cage, I wanted to test myself and see if I could be one of the athletes I watched and admired. At the same time I was also experiencing anxiety and depression, and was looking for a way to overcome this struggle and thought there would be no better way than throwing myself into training.

What are your immediate training goals?

I am currently getting ready for my debut MMA fight and cannot wait to get in there and throw down.

What are your goals for the next five years?

I want to be fighting professional MMA looking for a belt.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The coaches have been the best, and they have guided me all the way through my journey with Maryanne being my first coach in the introduction classes, to now having Lukaz, Jeremy and Toohey pushing me to reach my true potential. I am so grateful for their guidance and support. My training partners are also brilliant and friendly, even though we play punch face.

What is your favourite move?

Right overhand baby, look out for it!

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Now this is a hard question but I have two, Sugar by System of a Down and Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I enjoy hot yoga and sauna, but more than anything I like going down to Apollo Bay with Dicey and my two puppies, spending time in the water body boarding and running at Busty Road Hill.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Anyone who is strong willed and determined to get after it.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Coda for sure and my favourite dish would have to be the Eggplant and Tofu lettuce delights.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Get after it sooner and never look back.

“Ash is a hard working girl, she always puts 100% into her training, she been training with me for about a year and she has transformed her body to that of an athlete. Now it is time to put her into the test in the cage and see how far she can go. I dubbed her as ‘lady bull’, hope she brings it when the day comes ??” – Laos Toohey

“Ash is just an absolute powerhouse and you can always count on getting in good, hard sparring rounds with her. Her weight loss journey and transformation is super inspiring and I love sharing tips and thoughts after sessions with her. She’s one tough girl mentally and physically, and always gives 110% on the mats. She’s a friend and great training partner to have around, I can’t wait to see her step in to the octagon one day and let that hook do it’s job!” – Taru Siipola

“The Pitbull, attacks everything and doesn’t let go like a dog with a bone. We teach a lot here at Absolute but you can’t teach that.”- Jeremy Wharerau

“Ash ‘The Lady Bull’, I have so much to say about her, but to keep it simple this lady warrior has the character of a champion. She is always adapting and always improving. Whatever goals she sets in her mind, she works hard towards them. What I admire about her most is the amount of drive she puts in her training, her work ethic is unbelievable and in sparring she always pushes through and refuses to give up. Very inspiring to witness. I have no doubt Ash will become a Champion.” – Lukaz “The Lycan” Catubig

“Ash is an inspiration! Her drive and determination has seen her progress fast, she lives and breaths Absolute! Even when she’s trained hard and is exhausted, she still has a massive smile on her face and is still always so positive to those around her. Stay awesome legend!”- Maryanne Mullahy

“Ash has got to be one of the hardest working fighters I’ve seen at the gym. Always grinding it out, I can’t wait to see the LADY BULL live in action. A warrior at heart. My training partner for life.”- Dicey

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: NICK BAUM

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Nick Baum, our blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who moved to Melbourne from England and regular face on the competition scene, having recently competed at Super BJJ, AJJC Nationals and VJJC this year. Always keen to improve himself, Nick rarely misses a seminar with us, and has even done a stint at Absolute MMA Thailand for a Craig Jones BJJ camp. Read on to find out more about Nick!

How did you get into the sport?

It was pretty roundabout, but the short story is, I was training with Paul Bai to get fit, saw a class and then decided to jump in. Two years (and a lot of getting tapped) later, here we are.

What are your immediate training goals?

Continuing to work the fundamentals, eventually learning how to pass guard.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Sounds cliché, but it’s all about the journey, as long as I’m happy, healthy and continuing to train regularly that’s fine by me. Tapping Sean to an ankle lock would probably be the only serious long-term goal I’m currently pursuing.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The spirit and generosity of training partners on the mat never falters, no matter how many times I try and ankle lock them in pursuit of my long-term goal (see above).

What is your favourite move?

A difficult choice, but if someone put a gun to my head and forced me to pick, I would probably say the straight ankle lock.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Anything by England’s real queen, Sir Elton John.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

My girlfriend and I recently got a Nintendo Switch, so we’ve been playing a lot of Super Smash Bros. Otherwise I like to keep my mind active and learn new skills/try new things, I recently enrolled on a furniture making course as we need a new coffee table and can’t face another argument in Ikea.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

We moved to Melbourne 3 years ago on a working holiday visa and loved it so much we decided to stick around, but I grew up in Leicestershire, in the English Midlands. When I was 9 my family moved to a dairy farm, which my parents operated until fairly recently. Amongst other animals, we had a goat called Prince who would often escape and just take himself off for a bit. One time he got into my dad’s home brewed beer, drank all 20 litres of it and passed out. They eventually sold him so I have no idea what he’s up to now, but I have a tattoo of a goat just under my ribs to remember him by.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

All of the people at the gym who have children or family commitments and still manage to train regularly. You must have tremendous self-discipline!

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Carmelo’s Woodfired Pizza in Brunswick East does a low-key brilliant stone baked Napolitana. They also offer any two large pizzas for $20 every night of the week, so it’s a standard go-to.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

If you have to duck out of your first class early, don’t get showered, dressed, and then step back on to the mat for the end of class line up to shake everyone’s hand. Although you might think at the time it’s a good idea because you don’t want to be disrespectful, no-one cares and the memory of it will continue to make you cringe until your dying day. That and remember to relax/breathe.

“Too tall, too quick and too good looking?”- Rio Iskandar

“Nick Baum, what a top bloke. He could have been a premier league player, but he chose foot breaking over footballing. He will forever be my friend.” – Sean Le Gourrierec

“Nick is smart, curious, humble and a keen student of all things. It was obvious from day 1 when just turning up wasn’t enough. He wanted to learn and understand not just how to do things but why. When things got tough he just smiled and cracked a joke. His great attitude will take him far in whatever he does.” – Paul Bai

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MATTHEW “JENSY” JENS

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Matthew “Jensy” Jens, family man, valued member of the morning crew at Absolute MMA and blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Occupation: Production Manager at Synergy Events, and Headphone Specialist at StereoNET.

Martial Arts/Sports: BJJ and MMA.

How did you get into the sport?

I was introduced to MMA and BJJ by Sam Hayward in Ballarat. I started coming to classes to get fit, but shortly after I fell in love with the sport. Sam’s passion for BJJ is incredibly infectious, he has a very genuine love for martial arts. He is also a savage grappler.

What are your immediate training goals?

I haven’t competed in the last few years (since my daughter was born) and I’ve finally decided to get back into it this year. I’ve been smashing heaps of comps already, and I’m looking forward to smashing heaps more!

What are your goals for the next five years?

I would love to keep progressing in my BJJ journey. I’m hoping that my upcoming competition experience will teach me a thing or two. I’d also love to start pushing the technical side of my grappling to its limit. I’d also love to start teaching my 3 year old daughter BJJ!

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I love the coaches, and the people I train with – especially my fellow morning warriors that get up at stupid o’clock every morning to train.

What is your favourite move?

Darce choke. Nothing else comes close.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Kool And The Gang – Jungle Boogie

Nicknames & Fight Names?

“Jensy”. Everyone call me this (except for my Mum).

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

If I’m not at training, I’m either smashing gigs, spending time with my family, or reviewing some headphones/HiFi gear.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in Ballarat. I moved to Torquay when I was 18, then to Melbourne when I was 19 to study.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to a few people, but one of them is definitely John Campbell. His whole life revolves around integrity, honesty, loyalty and killer leg locks. If that’s not a winning combination, I don’t know what is. Dylan Alcott is another, he is an absolute champion and a sporting legend, and never lets anything get him down.

Also Sean Le Gourrierec, who valiantly wakes up at the crack of dawn every single weekday to train our sorry asses. That in itself deserves a special mention. Lastly, my Dad, because he is awesome (probably not much of a grappler though).

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

The Korean Fried Chicken at Rice Queen (in Fitzroy) is absolutely ridiculous.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Control your breathing, and slow down. Also, you really don’t need to drink espresso before every class. It might sound like a good idea, but it’s really not.

“Absolute top bloke! Matthew is a hard worker, tough grappler, dedicated family man, and great friend. Very lucky to have him part of the Absolute family!”- Maryanne Mullahy

“Jensy is top bloke, always supports the morning class, he chokes everyone with his darce and he’s been a mate for ages!”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“Matthew is a really nice guy who is always keen to learn. His personality is always great to have around the gym. He sometimes thinks he is funny (not really we just laugh at him!!) Always talks highly and lovingly about his family time.”- Sharky Ruffo

“Matthew Jensy Jens, commonly referred to as the Art Garfunkel to my Paul Simon, is actually alright despite hailing from Bendigo. He is always available to make his 84kg feel like 184kg, pass out parenting advice and darce you from what ever position he is in. In saying this, he does struggle with a few common phrases, I am not sure he quite understands them, things like, ‘let’s just roll light’, ‘are your ribs still sore, I’ll avoid them’, ‘we will just have a few beers’, ‘the cops are gone, it’s okay to come out now’, ‘Live Laugh Love’ and his favourite, ‘It’s Ballarat not Bendigo’.”- Andy Sales

I was born in Sydney (don’t hold that against me) I started Judo at age 6 with my Dad (Nidan at the time) under Jim Robinson, my 3 uncles were also black belts and I clearly remember my first time on the mats, I got an absolute hiding and my uncle Harold actually choked me out at age 6! …I sat out the rest of the class and watched dad throw him into the mats so hard you could feel the dojo move, and then Robbo put him to sleep in Kesa-Gatame, I can remember the look just before he did it….I went with dad every week until I was 14 and then trained Karate from 1984 – 2014, we moved to Melbourne for work and I’ve been here ever since.

“Dean is a really cool guy when he’s not on top of you.”- Max Mews

“I’ve known Dean for about six years, but it feels like a lot longer. During his time here at Absolute, Dean has come a long way from the hired help that used to just carry my bags as I prepared for training. Nowadays, better known as the ‘king of rock’ around the gym, he’s great for a laugh and always very generous with his time with anyone that asks for help. Dean is one of those people that helps make this place great. It has been my pleasure to watch Dean grow and extend his takedown game beyond his trademark ankle picks, but as always, people with great talents continuously look to develop themselves and take on more challenges worthy of their skills.

I was excited when I heard that Dean had decided to become a Ninja Warrior. Little known to most, it has always been a dream of Dean’s to conquer the warped wall. He has been working hard on his spaghetti arms, now able to almost do half a pull up. Now that the ‘bridge of blades’ and ‘salmon ladder’ are well in the revision mirror, he is more than ready for the fortune and fame of this action packed adventure. I strongly believe he will find his true calling. Please note that Dean is now accepting sponsorship for the next season’s Ninja Warrior series.” – Adrian Mannix

“Dean is the most gentleman Godzilla we have in the club! He is a man with a multiple talents, a total rockstar (literally), good father, good friend and a good student. I actually have him as an old brother who I teach and learn!”- Thiago Stefanutti

“One of the kindest and most interesting people you will ever meet! Dean is the kind of person who you can talk to about anything. His insight and knowledge on life is incredibly valuable. We’re very lucky to have him as part of the Absolute family! Stay metal legend! ?”- Maryanne Mullahy

“Dean possess two traits which make him the Odin of the team. Strength and Kindness. This brother will do anything for his friends. Let’s get some KFC and beer next time Deano!” – Stanley Huang

“He sent me a message one day ‘You and George smash me from the back, yes I am talking about jiu jitsu’. He is a genuinely nice guy around the gym, is always there for his friends and he is a loving family man. He is well respected by all. P.S, don’t tell him I said nice things about him ?” – Sharky Ruffo

“Dean Burgess is a rockstar! He trains like a machine and is always helping others making them feel comfortable in class. He is the type of guy to make you burst out laughing when you’re in a foul mood and he will always have your back. Love the guy.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“Dean, what a dude. He is one of the nicest guys in the gym, but when he’s not injured he could crush you with his bare hands.. The mfer has the voice of angel too, don’t believe me? Go find him on YouTube.”- Nick Metcalfe

“It’s always great to see Dean in class. He’s a fantastic guy with a set of solid gold pipes.”- Alistair Marx

“Dean is the guy that’d give you the shirt off his own back if he knew it’d help. He is practical and cares about people. Especially when it comes to family, you won’t find a more fierce and devoted father and husband.”- Apryl Eppinger

“If the great Norse god Odin ever walked into Absolute MMA…… it would not be Dean Burgess…… however he is the the Great Odin to the boys of Absolute. The man is an lover of heavy metal, can sing like a rockstar, follows the Wang meal diet plan like a true boss meat salad is a true fried chicken lover…… forgot to mention he’s one of the loveliest people on the mat. Nothing but respect for Deano….. fry on fella. Valhalla awaits you!”- Bailey Wang

One of the chefs where I used to work (Michael Morrison) would always be talking about it, he asked me if I’d like to learn some in his lounge room, it wasn’t creepy or anything.

What are your immediate training goals?

To baseball bat choke everyone.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Do you mean in life? Geez. Uh, I’d like to release another album with my friends in Cascades, keep training BJJ, be the best dad I can be for my daughter, get a better job.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Because it’s pretty much the only active thing I do, the rest of my life has become a lot easier to deal with thanks to BJJ, I went from feeling like I didn’t fit in, to wondering why all my friends don’t do BJJ very quickly.

What is your favourite move?

Baseball bat choke.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Bananas and Blow by Ween.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Thiago calls me “Mega Brain” because I’m highly intelligent and super cool, not because of cranial size at all.

Roll with Tina.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Grew up in Tassie, moved here about 10 years ago, everything smells better there, but you have to wear thermals all the time.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to patient people, due to the fact that they can usually tolerate my personality for long enough for me to ascertain whether or not I should look up to them for other reasons.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Usually wherever I work because I get a discount, so Mamasita at the moment, try the rockling ceviche and pork rib tacos.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Train more man, you’re still a white belt in 2019.

“Max has a big and red head.” – Thiago Stefanutti

“Max is probably the funniest guy at AMMA. He always brings a smile to your face and is an absolute beast to roll with!”- Sarah Sinclair

“He may not be the most skilled on the mat, but he makes up for it with his sense of humour and showing up to always give it a good solid crack.”- Apryl Eppinger

“Max is a top bloke who always has something funny to say when he’s rolling… and that’s about the only good thing he does in a roll.”- Cooper Burnham

“Max is no friend of mine- in fact all he ever does, is come over to my place, eats all of my food, and stops my husband Tim from doing his chores so they can play video games or roll around in our mat room like two little boys instead of being two grown-ass adult men. Max has also smashed a hole in our wall with his big head, and a bowl of homemade guacamole (I will never forgive for that)- that’s why I make a point of smashing him in every round when we roll, including smothering his face in his own pool of sweat on the mats. It’s very therapeutic, and I suppose that’s one of the only redeeming quality of his.- Tina Trinh

“He’s one of my very favourite human beings. Hilarious, lovely, and he looks spectacular in leopard print. I love Max❤” –  Alistair Marx

“Max loves a good punishment.” – Richard Lattemagi

“Max Mews is a funny guy, he is always having a conversation when he is rolling. He’s my friend.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“I met Maxwell Mews while travelling through the jungles of Peru 10 years ago, at the time he went by the name, Fernando. We became friends while participating in an Ayahuasca ceremony under the guidance of some of the local shaman, the ceremony lasted seven days. We lost touch for several years, but I re-met Fernando in Melbourne, where I learned that he has become a qualified Ayahuasca Shaman and performs local ceremonies in Melbourne under the name, Maxwell Mews. Additionally, Max also does BJJ, he is very enthusiastic and enjoys it very much. One day he may even be good at it.”- James Sullivan

“Max strives to be a technical roller, always keen to break down positions whether it’s after a few drinks in the back yard, on the tram, or behind the bar where we work. It’s never an inappropriate time for us to get our hands on each other, we don’t care who sees #lovefeelsnoshame” – George McCahill

“Max Mews is probably the funniest bobble head I know. He’s always laughing, often at himself, or talking shit, especially while getting bashed. Max has come a long way since he started jiu jitsu, and is always thinking about jiu jitsu even when hes being a lazy bum. I dont know what’s bigger, his head, or his heart. He is a great bloke, even if he rolls like a joke!” – Tim Baker

“Max is a gentile giant, who is as solid in his techniques as he is as a person. Always up for a roll or a beer and formidable at both! One of the most encouraging and humble Absolute members! Legend!”- Trish Brew
