MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: ANICA WAJSWELNER

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Anica Wajswelner, large animal veterinary nurse, car enthusiast and Muay Thai student. Enthusiastic, a great listener and fresh off a stint at Absolute MMA Thailand, we are excited to see what skills Anica has brought back to us from Phuket! Read on to find out more about Anica.

Occupation: Large animal veterinary nurse, I mainly work with horses, and a bit with cattle, but mostly training horses and keeping them in good health. I am also currently recruiting for the police force.

Martial Arts/Sports: Muay Thai.

How did you get into the sport?

I have always had a fascination with combat sports and liked the idea of being able to protect myself, and stay fit. I had a friend who trained at the gym and suggested I give it a go. I was beyond nervous when I walked through the doors, but after a few classes I quickly fell in love with Muay Thai.

What are your immediate training goals?

My immediate training goals are to sharpen my techniques, improve my fitness and strength, and learn how to relax between drills. Also implementing checking kicks in sparring so my leg can get a break from being in a constant state of bruise.

What are your goals for the next five years?

In the next five years I hope to have accomplished a few fights. It Is definitely a big aspiration to put all the skills I’ve learned and to be practised and disciplined enough to fight. I hope I have found a healthy balance between training, work and well being.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

You can literally walk into any class and immediately connect with your training partners, everyone is always so helpful to one another and the comradery between the coaches and students is very special to be a part of. You can set yourself any short or long term goals and know that you have the support of the coaches and your training mates.

What is your favourite move?

I have been a fan of the good old left teep to switch kick of late, that or a solid knee elbow combo.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Around The World by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Toohey bestowed ‘Curly’ to me, so naturally I got that made into my mouth guard. Not sure if he even knows my real name. No fight name yet – but I sure hope I’ll find a good one… Kickass Cowgirl has a nice ring to it.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

I love to hitch the horse float up and compete in Working Equitation and Ranch Riding events with my horse. I am also a massive car enthusiast so love taking my VF and going for drives through country Victoria.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I was born in California, so I have had lots of opportunities to spend time in The States. I lived in Canberra for most of my childhood and then moved to Melbourne for high school. I studied veterinary nursing, finished my degree and have now decided I would like to go for a career in public service, eventually detective work, that brings me to where I’m at today.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to my mentors in any discipline in life, those are the people that support you and aspire to help you become the greatest you can be. I also admire the people that work hard when faced with challenges and persist to overcome them, whether that be making better choices, taking responsibility for actions, or doing something way out of their comfort zone.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

The Petite Crepery on Swanston Street make the most legendary Nutella crepes.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

It is okay to feel like a complete dingus, and prepare – you’re gonna be sore tomorrow.

I’m from the western suburbs of Melbourne, an interesting story about me growing up would have to be when I started training at the age of 13, with adults and being one of the only young kids in class. Being so obsessed with the sport I used to come home from school and watch old UFC cards on Foxtel before going to training.

“This little youngin will be a champ one day! Keep working hard and don’t forget to drill those oil checks!”- Fei Yen

“Jake has been whipped ever since he became Lisa’s wife.”- Daniel Howard

“Every time I spar with Jake, he thinks he wins but that’s because I let him. Jokes, but in all seriousness he’s got a beast wrestling game and he’s probably been a blue belt in BJJ for 10 years. You can always muck around with a guy, but when it gets down and dirty and you need that boost in training for your next fight he’s the guy to go to.”- Donn Malate

” ‘It’s not an accent I just have a deep voice’ – Jake Savic, proudly representing the area as he tries his hardest to impress Lisa Kyriacou.”- Joe Boobyer

“The improvements Jake has made in his training while at Absolute are immeasurable! From up-skilling his pre-existing grappling skills, adding flourishes to his striking acumen, and now doing a great job with strength and conditioning, Jake has reinvented himself at Absolute. It’s great to have been witness to, and to have been a part of his journey. Despite all of that, I think the most rewarding thing, has been getting to witness the beautiful relationship bloom between himself and Lisa ‘Beef’ Kyriacou. A relationship that has truly made me believe again.”- Amit Narayan

“His height and speed makes a perfect training and sparring partner for a flyweight even though he fights at lightweight due to his size lol. Full of positive energy and smiles in the gym. The man loves to throw a spinning backfist.”- Ridz Wan

“Seeing what Jake is able to withstand both inside and outside of the gym is nothing short of amazing. His ability to take punishment and keep on going is seriously impressive. A lot of men would’ve tapped out by now, but his relationship with Lisa is something that must be worth fighting for. He’s a good mixed martial artist too.” – Oliver Smith

I’m originally from a small town in Finland and been living in Melbourne for almost 5 years now. I used to play drums as a kid and always dreamed about a career as a rockstar. Me and my mates even had a band called “The Seahorses” but unfortunately we didn’t end up conquering the world.
In my head back then I thought “I’ll move somewhere where it’s warm all the time!” but yeah, here I am in Melbourne! I also brought my mastiff Rango with me from Finland which was an experience on its own. I do love this city now and I’m happy to call it home.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to people who are driven and ambitious. I love being around people who are humble and dream big. It inspires me and drives me towards success and being a better version of myself.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

“It’s gonna be cool, you’re gonna learn this shit with time, just be patient”. I’m not always the most patient person and give myself a hard time for it. It’s all a big learning curve!

“She is a warm and friendly person, but she is also tough as nails on the mats.”- Lucas Catubig

“Taru is tough and adaptable, I see her training hard with the MMA crew and hear about her adventures in working concreting, working at a local bottle-o and studying. She can handle a fair load. The only complaint or request I ever heard from her…. is to not ask her to share her almonds with you.”- Apryl Eppinger

“I’ll keep this short.”- Emile Martinot

“Taru is an absolute powerhouse and a lot of fun to spar/kick pads with. She’s always smiling, is down for a laugh, and an absolute delight to have in the gym. I’m excited to see what the future holds for her fight career and to see her in the octagon one day!”- Emilie Yap

“Such a happy little ray of sunshine – never stops smiling even when she’s sparring.”- Georgia Verry

“Always going to have a good time and have fun at training with Taru. We have some good sparring rounds and you always have to watch out for that super man punch with her.”- Rebecca Cerra

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Grew up in Malaysia. Moved away when I was 17 to another state, away from my parents. I was into bodybuilding throughout college and even competed in a few competitions. Never had any interest or thoughts of trying martial arts at all back then. I was all about those gainz, and smashing weights. I worked as a financial adviser for almost a year after finishing college before I decided that it was not for me. Had a talk with my parents and they suggested to further my studies here in Melbourne. Came here four years ago, started martial arts about a year after and I have been hooked ever since. I remember my first free trial class that I did about three years ago. I was bigger and muscular than I was now, and this girl I partnered with just double legged me, and got me in an RNC before I knew what was happening. It was then I knew I needed to learn this lol.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Those who are humble and respectful. No matter how good you are, there is always someone better, so stay humble.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I grew up in Malaysia so it would have to be Nasi lemak. Mamak restaurant in the CBD makes the best one around Melbourne, I think.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Listen more to your coach, not YouTube.

“This guy is a legend both on and off the mat. Seriously down to earth and incredibly talented.”- Stephanie Scipione

“Ridz is an absolute killer in the gym, very friendly and not that strong……. this man loves his kimura grips, but what he really needs to work on is his abs and biceps (I’m totally not jealous of his muscle). PS, if you want his body, I’m his dietitian/trainer.”- Bailey Wang

“The lil Malaysian warrior that eats too much broccoli haha. Happy guy that always has a smile on his face and loves to train.”- Drew Anthony Birch

“Easily one of the nicest and most swole members at the gym.”- Andre Nguyen

“My boy Ridz one of the nicest human being in the matts. He’ll look after you during training sessions and even share his wisdom too. But always get to amaze me seeing him lifting people up with a double leg so flawlessly. This guys is a machine!”- Luke Catubig

“An absolute beast both ground and stand up. He’s the Mighty Mouse of the gym, the only difference between them two is that Ridz still has a set of hair and maybe one or two more abs. ?” – Donn Malate

“Ridz is the smallest giant I ever met. What a monster.”- Thiago Stefanutti

“The only guy who can potentially defeat mighty mouse johnson. All round nice guy with a million dollar smile. It’s great training with the former Mr Malaysia.”-Kevin Lau

“ex-Mr Malaysia, pretty sure he still is.”- Rio Iskandar

“Ridz, aka Mr Malaysia aka Mr Armbars. With a disproportionate volume of Muscle to height, a smile like Tom Cruise in risky business and speed like a cheater, Ridz is an athletic charcter built for action movies ( playing the bad boy) and mma. I’ve been super fortunate to have been able to train side by side with Ridz for a few years now, he is a great team mate, martial artist and someone you want you train and partner with. He is the sole reason I know how to escape armbars ? I hope he continues to train and compete in MMA, Ridz has had a super impressive transition to striking after grappling for so long. I hope you lose some Muscle and abs so we can all feel better about ourselves Ridz- miss you mate!”- Kyle Morgan

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: VAUGHN YOUNG

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Vaughn Young, Muay Thai fighter born in Trinidad, and raised in Canada. Despite having trained with the Absolute MMA crew for just under 5 months, Vaughn has rapidly become a valued member of the fight team and our in house clinch technician. Come down on the day to support Vaughn and the team, and read on to find out more about this legend!

How did you get into the sport?

To develop my cardio (Thanks Coach Dan!) and boxing.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Reach 30 fights and a few more belts.

It’s a complete gym. The the resources I have are limitless for anything I could possibly want to improve on. It’s a big gym with a small family feel.

I don’t really have a favourite move, but I like toying with people’s minds. A lot of fakes and strikes they didn’t see coming. Mind games.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Hard pad rounds/ Jidenna- Love Live the Chief

Nicknames & Fight Names?

I’ve actually never had a fight name. Really should get on that (haha).

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Listen to music in nature and skydiving (weird I know).

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’ve only started training in Muay Thai for the past 2 years. I have an addictive personality, so when I like something I get obsessed. I had 9 fights in 18 months. The most interesting Muay Thai story I have is having the chicken pox 9 days before my first fight and still fighting and securing the win. I had an MCL tear 2 weeks before a tournament in the states and still fought on one leg. I won my first 2 fights, but lost on points in the finals.

I was born in Trinidad which is in the Caribbean. I spent half my life there and the other half in Canada. I like to travel and as a result I get bored if I stay too long in one place.

I wanted to escape the cold weather in Canada while still being able to develop my Muay Thai skills and improve my skydiving. Australia gave me the option to do all 3. I’m a city boy by nature so Melbourne was an easy choice.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to people who are humble and have uncompromising work ethic. People who act instead of making excuses. I try to surround myself with these sort of people because I believe you are who you surround yourself with.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Lentils as anything. I like what they stand for. They are community based, help out those in need and the food is actually AMAZING. The lasagna is out of this world.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Stop comparing yourself to others. Keep your head down and do the work. With this mindset you will get where you want to be.

“I can’t work out his accent. I’ve known Vaughn for four and a half months. At first, I didn’t expect anything from him, he’s been competing Muay Thai before I met him. He’s a natural athlete who is dedicated to his sport, a quick learner and a good listener. On the 20th of July 2019, it will be the first time he fights under my guidance. Hope he gets the win for the Absolute MMA family! Anyone who knows Vaughn, come support him on this day!”- Laos Toohey

“First time I sparred Vaughn, he shoved his palm in my face and laughed. I knew we’d get along after that – he’s such a crafty fighter…cannot wait to see him in the ring here in Australia.”- Georgia Verry

“Vaughn is as deadly as he is sexy…lethal combination. In the short time we’ve been training together he’s shared so much knowledge and has helped everyone train harder and smarter. Can’t wait to see him in proper action in the ring! Last thing, thank you Vaughn for the free vasectomy, it is hugely appreciated.”- Fei Yen

“Awesome training partner to have around, absolute technician in the clinch!”- Andre Nguyen

“Vaughan is that devastating knee fighter that everyone has nightmares about. He’s only been training with us for a short amount of time but since he arrived he’s elevated everyone’s clinch game. Aside from that he’s as cool as a cucumber and a pleasure to be around.”- Darren Gn

“Vaughn is one of the most dangerous vegetarians I’ve ever met, the Caribbean clinching machine that he is will hurt you on the outside with his range and kill you on the inside with knees. Thx for conditioning my ribs xx”- Alex Taylor

“Don’t be fooled by Vaughn’s balmy attitude, the man was engineered for Muay Thai and he ain’t afraid to show it! Whilst being a clinching beast, he is also very gentle and always happy to share his tricks. Great guy all round.” – MK Rubae

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: GENEVIEVE SOVEREIGN

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Genevieve Sovereign, a movement specialist with a gymnastic background, who has now turned her hand to martial arts! Genevieve has coached gymnastics in the past, and has a passion for psychology, having studied it postgraduate to her engineering degree. Read on to find out more about Gen!

Occupation: Desk-bound office monkey, plotting for freedom bananas.

Martial Arts/Sports: Serial dabbling – honestly if it’s movement related, I’ll at least give it an inquisitive sniff.

How did you get into the sport?

Gymnastics hooked me from wee-tyke age and taught me the importance of self-awareness, broad exploration, seeking challenges, competing intelligently and acquiring bananas to lead a fulfilling life. With all that preoccupying my thoughts, Richard had locked me into membership before I even realised this wasn’t the book sign-out desk at the library. Damn son.

What are your immediate training goals?

I’ve recently pestered Dan Howard into doing PT sessions with me, in the hopes of becoming less embarrassingly unfit. My immediate priority is rebuilding enough stamina to start attending Toohey’s classes again without keeling-over halfway through his warmups.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Central to my freedom banana empire’s ongoing expansion will be deepening my understanding of health, fitness, movement, martial arts, the human condition and other Universal Truths. I also wouldn’t mind looking deadly in a bikini at some point in my life – I have faith it could still happen one day.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

My ringtone, going to voicemail – it symbolises all the missed opportunity and interpersonal connection I’m eschewing in favour of “personal development”.

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Well, my kettlebell class buddy Nicola has started calling me Bendy, presumably due to my great mental agility and eagerness to please everyone at all times. I guess. In the unlikely event of ever needing a fight name at my ripe old age, I reckon something ambiguous and multipurpose like “Love Tap” would be pretty fun. Calling dibs now FYI.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Contemplate the nature of reality and the meaning of life. I’m totally serious actually. If you ever want to shoot that sh*t, hit me up for a weekend pint or few.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in the vast northern wilds of Canada. Moved to the big city for uni and somehow earned an engineering degree (major: chemical engineering/minor: bioengineering). Stumbled into Oz on a bizarrely specific visa that only existed for a few years, for engineering grads of a shortlist of foreign unis (thanks UofT). Fatefully met and married Matt, my love and best friend ever, here in Melbourne. Recently finished postgrad in psychology, because logical career progression is overrated. Now strategising optimal deployment of my freedom banana hoard, to break these self-imposed desk job shackles and establish my empire (or win the lottery and spend life until liver failure as an internet troll).

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I’m exactly five feet tall. It freaks the hell out of me not to be looking up to someone. Short people are f**king weird-as. On a deep and spiritual level though, I try to look up to everyone. We’ve all got things to teach each other – it’s just a matter of perception and reception. And maybe drunkenness. Personal drunkenness often helps when I’m trying to look up to everyone.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

“@t Ease – Easy Thai” in Lonsdale Street is my absolute favourite. The manager and wait staff are so lovely, and the food is (as far as my admittedly non-expert palate is concerned) consistently delicious, across the board.

“My fellow Movement Artist Specialist is usually found looking back at ya upside down doing handstands, pikes and backbends! Don’t let her smile trick ya as she will catch you in a sneaky Americana or quick armbar when you blink!”- Kelz Lau

“Genevieve loved us soooo much that she came back again. So happy to have her back in the gym on the mats. She’s always enthusiastic and eager to learn. Making it a pleasure to work with her. Her positively is simply infectious that you just can’t help returning her smile.”- Apryl Eppinger

“Gen is one of the most vibrant human beings in the gym. Don’t be deceived by her looks, though she may be nice and smiling walking around the gym, on the inside she’s a warrior and a true martial artist that has been training her entire life. Very grateful to have met a martial artist like her.”- Luke Catubig

“Genevieve is a legend. She is always smiling and ready to roll.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“Gen is a great training partner. She is so friendly, caring and has a positive attitude ready to tackle any challenge.”- Rebecca Cerra

To steadily progress relative to things going on in my life

I feel welcome and encouraged every time I walk into the gym.

Handspring invert on a pole. I’m not good enough to have a favourite move for BJJ yet.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Nicknames & Fight Names?

I used to play Roller Derby, my bout name was Lofty Legs and I was number 11 of course. I’m not overly interested in renewing that for BJJ ?

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Pole dance, CrossFit, internet shopping ?

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I am originally from Sydney. I moved to Canberra about 100 years ago to train full time with the Australian Women’s Volleyball team at the AIS. There I met the father of my children as he was in the AUS men’s team. After the Sydney Olympics we relocated to Melbourne as I gained entry into RMIT to do my education degree. Melbourne is home ?

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Anyone who moves through life treating people with respect and humility.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Crate Speciality Coffee (it’s behind my house ?) and their Haloumi Toastie.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

You don’t have to to remember everything every time!

“Since joining Absolute MMA Alison has become a big supporter of other ladies in the team. Especially our newest members. As her confidence grows with her Jiu-Jitsu it shows in her enjoying and interactions on and off the mat. I am immensely impressed with the work she has put in, testing her nerves and herself constantly.” – Apryl Eppinger

“I have only known Alison for a short while, but I feel like I’ve known her forever. She is an absolute gem of a person who is always full of energy. Her enthusiasm to improve her Jiu Jitsu is starting to pay dividends and I can’t wait to see her game rocket off.”- Kim Cousins

“I can always spot Alison out from a crowd with her bright red hair. She’s such a positive person and is always pushing her boundaries.”- Maria Zampogna

“Alison is really tough on the mat, but really friendly off the mat, she will be a great competitor.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“Alison has a white belt in jiujitsu and a black belt in pole dancing. Don’t mess with her” – Lenie Vamvesos

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JULIAN GONZALEZ

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Julian “Julz/The Chubby Roller” Gonzalez, also affectionately known as ‘Thiago’s son’ and one of our resident black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A known Star Wars and Marvel fan, Julz loves his science fiction just as much as he loves the look on people’s faces when they struggle to submit him. Read on to find out more about Julz!

Occupation: Currently labouring. Trying to become a Prison Officer.
Martial Arts/Sports: I started Japanese jiu-jitsu when i was 8 or 9. Didn’t last long, but there are photos of me doing arm bars which I had completely forgotten about. I played soccer, indoor soccer, and footy. Right now it’s mainly BJJ, the occasional wrestling class and occasional weights.

How did you get into the sport?

I really hated team sports. I never played anything long enough to be skilled to help a team and had some troubles mingling with other kids due to some anxiety. When I was 16, I went to a Tae Kwon Do gym to sign up, but they had shut down, I then found a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym 2 days later and had a look. It looked weird, but I signed up after just watching a class. I liked it mainly because I was around people, but I had to rely on my self to prosper. Something I really needed at the time and still do.

What are your immediate training goals?

At the moment, to be as hard as possible to submit and be controlled. I figure if someone can’t finish me, it’s a matter of time before I finish them. Plus, the look on their face when their best game isn’t working. Still a work in progress.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Don’t get diabetes or have a heart attack.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Thanks to Absolute and BJJ I found friends. I had always felt lonely growing up and had some anxiety and some depression. Feels good to be a part of a community, makes it a lot easier to deal with those negatives in life.

What is your favourite move?

When I was a white belt, it was triangle from guard. Blue belt was cross collar chokes from anywhere I could get grips. Purple was a bit of everything. I think brown belt was arm bars. Currently, I like kimuras and guillotines, but I’m not great with guillotines.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Watching movies or shows with my girlfriend. Couch potato stuff.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I was born in Melbourne. I have lived in QLD and NSW. The only cool story I have was when I competed hungover as a purple belt in Adelaide in 2012. I won 2 divisions and $500. I actually did inside sankaku with a straight footlock on the far leg that day, before it was cool. The best part though is, I also saw a really pretty girl that day (Natalie Hobbs) but I was too afraid to talk to her. She ended up moving to Melbourne in 2017, trains at Absolute MMA now, and I’m not afraid to talk to her anymore. We are moving in together 🙂 Other than that, I’m boring AF.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

My mum. Single mother, hard worker. Has no excuses. If I had even a fraction of her character, I’d be an infinitely better person.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Angie’s Dumpling Bar out in Knox. All the dumplings.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Just try to enjoy it.

“Gym enforcer for wearing footwear in the bathrooms. Not the hero we deserve, but the hero we need. All round great guy.”- Bryce Yeo

“Julz is a top bloke who has great taste in sci-fi films (Star Wars nerd). On top of that his Jiu Jitsu is strong as hell.”- Cooper Burnham

“My earliest memory of Julz was when I was a white belt and he was mat side when I was choked unconscious. He shrugged and said “She’ll be right”. Not much has changed…Seriously, the guy is a beast and has more talent in his little finger than I have in my whole body.”- Kim Cousins

“I once watched Julz eat an entire roast goat in one sitting, he is made out of some dense material 7 times as strong as any element found on earth and owns a $400 ‘lightsabre’ that takes 4D cell batteries.”- Doug Kaegi

“I’ve only rolled with Julz a few times, I tried all of the suggested Silverback Gorilla defence techniques such as:

  1. Slowly crouch down and make yourself small.
  2. Avert your gaze from any nearby gorilla and look away. Attempt to look disinterested.
  3. Gradually create distance between you and the gorillas without making any sudden moves.

However, I found out the hard way that these are very unreliable techniques.”- Max Mews

“My son makes me proud, his Jiu-Jitsu is better than he thinks and he is a good and loyal friend. I love this guy.”- Thiago Stefanutti

“Julz is a great guy, always has something funny to say and is a great coach and asset to anyone he trains BJJ with. If you try to submit Julz, he will often use that same move to catch you. The bastard. Julz also suspiciously looks a lot like Thiago’s illegitimate child…”- Tim Baker

“He uses panda guard. It’s infuriating.”- Natalie Hobbs

“Julz is a great guy who has helped me a lot and continues to do so. Great grappler.”- Nathan Heddle
