“Simon has been a mentor and friend for me over the years and I have learned a lot about business, life and about the dangers of crossing my ankles when I have someone’s back.” – Daniel Herbertson

“Some facts about Simon –
* Speaks Mandarin.
* The #1 person to go shopping with in China.
* Very bald.

“You know what they say about long legs, long p…ants.”- Darren Gn

“All round good person, makes training fun. The tallest Asian I know.” – Albert Xavier

“Good guy but short arms.”- Justin Bai

“Always enjoy seeing him at the gym. Every time we get to class early, we always make time for a quick chat before we start to viciously kick, punch, elbow and knee other people (lol). A great energy to have in the gym, always puts some of his music on to pump the vibes up even more! It was definitely a great experience to play a small part in his training camp for his most recent fight.”- Romeo Apines

“If only Fei was as good at fighting as he was good looking we would all be in trouble.”- Andre Nguyen

“Most of the time he’s super chill to spar with, but then every now and then he remembers his reach is crazy long and he hits you with some mean kicks – it’s tight.”- Georgia Verry

MEET THE TEAM: LIVIA GLUCHOWSKA

Coach Livia Gluchowska, known affectionately as “Liv” or “Dear Leader” is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, 3-time BJJ World Champion, 2-time Asian Champion, 11-time Pan-Pacific Champion, 3-time Australian Champion, Abu Dhabi Pro Trials Winner and 2017 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship Silver Medallist. She will be running an intensive women-only training camp at Absolute MMA Thailand in Phuket, Thailand this October alongside fellow IBJJF World Champion Rikako Yuasa. Read on to find out more about this amazing superwoman, and don’t forget to “Liv, laugh and love”!

What made you start Martial Arts?

I retired from competitive sprint cycling and wanted a sport to do to keep fit. I started off with Muay Thai but found it boring, then tried a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class and fell in love with it.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I started training at Absolute MMA when I was a blue belt. It is by far the best place to train in Australia. I am a physiotherapist as well as a BJJ coach.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Lachie Giles for his problem solving abilities and being a down to earth and a kind human. Many of my teammates inspire me every day.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Steak 🙂

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

I loved Brazil for the training, Galapagos Islands for the nature and Isla Mujeres for the whale sharks.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I’m Polish and came to Australia when I was 12.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Honest, fair and self-driven people.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Laugh at yourself, relax more and know that you can always learn a skill.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Lachie because I like him, Simon because he is massive so if there was no food we could eat him and Thiago because his giant head could feed Simon, Lachie and I.

“Considering how smol she is, she should be easy to squish, but she’s strong as f***, bendy as f***, and technical as f***. It’s almost as if her Jiu-Jitsu is world class or something.
Friendly, fierce, and determined. Liv is responsible for the creation and continual growth of the women’s Jiu-Jitsu team in St Kilda, who aspire to be as strong, bendy and technical as her.
She’s probably partly responsible for them being a bit weird too..” – Hannah Gorman

“During one of my first Jiu-Jitsu classes Liv gave me some great advice that I’ve really tried to implement in my game – “Just be annoying”. Liv leads by example and is a role model for the whole club, particularly the women’s team. Watching her train every day, always trying to improve, motivates us want to do the same. Liv is like our Jiu-Jitsu mum, but cross her and she’ll crossface you!”- Sarah Chapman

“Liv is inspiring, hard working and amazingly talented! Her positive and heart warming approach to life is a simple reminder why many appreciate having her in their lives, including myself. She’s also got the most savage Cross-face ever!!” – Rob Pelle

“Our dear leader Livia has super powers – whether you were already a fan of Livia Gluchowska or not, you just become one once you get to know her. She is kind, caring, encouraging and has a huge heart! She is extremely dedicated and her work ethic & willpower are super inspiring…it just naturally rubs on to you.
Do not underestimate her size. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT let her cross face you. And if you think your guard/sweeps are feeling good, just see what you can do when she split pass you. Also do not give her your leg, she will dolphin you.
Her leadership has taken our women’s team to another level and we are incredibly lucky to be training with one of the best everyday!
Note: If you want to get into her good books, feed her food and coffee. How do you think Young became her favourite Asian out of all of us?” – Chisaki Akiyama

WEEKEND RESULTS (17/08/2018 – 19/08/2018)

Big weekend for both our grappling and striking teams with “Rebellion Muay Thai 20/Roots 8: Stir it up” locally and “Kasai Pro 3” internationally in New York City. Our Absolute MMA Thailand team also represented the gym, with fighter Erhan Gungor getting in a KO win in the 3rd round in his Muay Thai bout at Bangla Stadium on Friday night against an experienced American opponent.

We had three fighters on the daytime amateur show at St Kilda Town Hall,”Roots 8: Stir it up”- Kevin Jousset, Fei Yen and Darren Gn. Kevin Jousset kicked things off for the team on the second fight of the card, dominating his opponent and taking home an early win in round one, TKO by leg kicks! Having already made a name for himself in the Judo world, it’s great to see Kevin branching into Muay Thai. Keen to see you fighting Muay Thai again soon Kev!

Fight number 4 on the card rolled around, with Fei Yen stepping into the ring against opponent Robert Wiley in a 3x2min 67kg bout. Going the full three rounds in his bout, the fight went to the judges with Fei sustaining a loss via split decision. Not the result he wanted, but plenty to take away experience wise and to learn from. Looking forward to seeing you continue to hone your skills Fei!

Darren Gn was up next from the team against opponent Vish Mitra in a 3x2min 61kg bout. After a well executed fight camp, Daz was on weight and well-prepared for his bout. After getting caught by an overhand right to the head, the referee called an eight count, Darren shaking off the blow. Showing great spirit to get back in there and give more in a few exchanges, the ref called the fight after noting the damage sustained. While we’re shattered for Daz, we couldn’t be prouder of how he handled himself post fight, showing great sportsmanship in congratulating his opponent- all class! Thank you for being such a great representative for the gym, we know you’ll take this experience and apply what you’ve learned in your next fight.

Finishing up for the team on Rebellion, Smokin’ Joe Coverdale was first up on the pro card against a tough opponent in Cody Owens in a 3x3min war at 62kg. In this clash between two aggressive fighters, there was a lot of trading back and forth with heavy shots ringing out across the Rebellion arena. Joe got through the first round, unfortunately sustaining a loss via KO in the third round. Couldn’t be prouder of your resilience Joe- you always show great heart and you’ll come back stronger for experience gained.

Our grapplers were also hard at work last weekend, with Kasai Pro 3 taking place at the famous Hammerstein Ballroom of the Manhattan Center in New York. The main event of the stacked card featured our very own Coach Craig Jones facing off against Rousimar Palhares.

The match up had all the ingredients necessary to make it one of the most exciting contests of the year, but after 15 minutes of actively stalling, Palhares was penalized and the decision went to Craig Jones.

Craig was definitely the aggressor, trying his best to off balance and get underneath his opponent, but a huge size difference and an overly cautious Palhares made forcing the issue difficult.

Congratulations to Craig not only for getting the win, but also for getting on the mat versus a competitor at least 28 pounds larger than originally agreed upon!

Coach Mikael Yahaya of Absolute MMA St Kilda also made the journey to New York to compete at the Kasai event. Mikael left it all on the mat, fighting a tough, technical match at 140lbs versus JM Holland (10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Bethlehem). While Mikael sustained a loss via points, every match is an opportunity to learn and grow and we know Mikael will take everything he has experienced on board here and be stronger for it!

We’re all glad you both got out of there in one piece, and can’t wait to have you home again!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: LISA KYRIACOU

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! The member spotlight turns to Lisa “Savage” Kyriacou following her debut Mixed Martial Arts bout last weekend on Path to Hex, from which she brought home a win via TKO in the second round! Never one to shy away from the action, this tough lady is well known at the gym for her colourful language, loving a good spar and a good laugh. Congratulations on your recent win Lisa, we can’t wait to see you back in the octagon! Read on to find out more about Lisa!

Occupation: Dental laboratory assistant

Martial Arts/Sports: Mixed Martial Arts

How did you get into the sport?

I grew up as a little tom boy with a tough older brother that loved fighting. We would always watch action movies, play Tekken and Mortal Kombat, and constantly belt the f*** out of each other as most loving ethnic siblings do. I would watch him fight in kickboxing and destroy his opponent. People that know me well know that I love action. As a little girl I loved to play fight with my brother and older cousins (still do), and I have always found martial arts to bring high intensity, excitement and passion. I couldn’t imagine my life without it.

What are your immediate training goals?

To improve my technique and to not use the majority of my energy when not necessary.

What are your goals for the next five years?

I believe I have the potential and passion to get very far in MMA. So for the next 5 years, I see myself becoming the best fighter I can possibly be. I’m a big believer in making dreams become reality.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Everything. Absolute MMA has changed my life. I have made some awesome friends that share similar passions and dreams and all of my coaches are AMAZING humans. They all have taught me so much and have had great patience with me and my stupidity at times. Absolute MMA has become home to me and I couldn’t imagine life without it. This gym makes every day a f***** great day.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I have a very large big crazy Greek family that I love very much. I grew up in Eltham my whole life, but as of last week I moved out of home for the first time ever and moved to South Melbourne on my own in a cute little apartment. #cityliving

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I look up to people that have a great sense of humor, a positive mind frame and who love to have some fun in life. I also look up to people that aren’t afraid to be who they really are and who don’t care what others think.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

This question is almost impossible to answer. I can definitely say that cheese is my number one love and anything meat comes second.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

“Calm the f*** down”. I could still use this advice at times (hahaha).

“Training with Lisa is getting constantly punched in the face “by accident.” She has a heart of gold and really cares about her team mates, but I pity her future opponents-you’re in for a brawl.”- Giulia Cinquegrana, training partner

“Lisa is terrifying because she strikes me as someone who thrives in chaos. Combine that with a real desire to learn and get better and you have a pretty scary 55kg female fighter on your hands. Looking forward to watching her amateur career unfold and seeing what she can do.”- Sam Hibberd, Coach

MEET THE TEAM: JEREMY WHARERAU

Jeremy Wharerau is a former professional mixed martial artist with a record of 4 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw with one win coming via KO in a bout fought in America. With a yell like a drill sergeant, Jeremy pushes his students to achieve their best by threatening extra long planks or more ab exercises during his classes. While he enjoys a laugh and a bit of back and forth banter, Jeremy is all business when it comes to martial arts and his approach to the mental aspects of training and fighting have seen his students to success at all levels! Read on to find out more about Jeremy!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

“Chicago USA 2010. I was a massive underdog with an unimpressive fight record of 1-1-1 facing a 10-2 BJJ black belt on his home turf. 26 seconds into the first round I’d run over him by sinking in a RNC.”

What made you start Martial Arts?

“I found out my best mate had started training in Muay Thai. I was like “Hell no!” he was gonna know ninja shit and not me? Nope.”

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favorite memory from when you were younger?

“I was chronically accident prone as a kid, so all my memories tend to be of me getting hurt…. next question.”

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

“Bruce Lee, no need to say why…it’s Bruce Lee.”

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

“Tyrannosaurus Rex.”

What were some funny/interesting/weird hobbies you had when you were a teenager?

“Keeping tropical fish, I had a sick aquarium setup in my room before I moved to Australia.”

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

“Humble people, I find being humble so hard…because I’m so awesome.”

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

“Princess Bride.”

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

“Being that I was truly awesome in my first class, I wouldn’t say anything other than “keep being truly awesome Jeremy”. However if I could go back to my second class I’d tell myself to slow down and enjoy the journey. Don;t get hung up and frustrated by techniques you don’t pick up right away. Just enjoy the ride of learning something new and cool, journey before destination.”

“Of all the coaches we have at the gym, Jeremy is certainly one of them!” – Daniel Herbertson

“Jeremy talks a lot, and most of the time about himself. But every now and then he’s got a nugget of wisdom that he imparts that’s worth all that gab. He’s a great coach, a great dad, and a great man.”- Tina Trinh

“Although often going on tangents, deeply exploring things and explaining them with 100 words when you only need 10 – also known as ‘Jezzing’, Jeremy is one of the most passionate and invested coaches who is not afraid to punch his students in the face if required.” – Justin Bai

“One day I’ll land a takedown/submit/drop Jeremy with a body rip. On that day my life will be complete.” – Darren Gn

FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (23/07/2018-29/07/2018)

The Absolute MMA team is closing up July with a bang, with members of our team flying everywhere to fight and compete over the last week. We’ve had team members go interstate to Perth, and others going overseas to Tokyo- it’s been Absolute MMA versus the World!

Antonia Kay from our Melbourne CBD boxing team got us started by flying to Perth for the World Championship selection event tournament at the beginning of the week. This follows a mammoth fundraiser by head Boxing Coach Pradeep Singh to raise over $1200 in two weeks to fund her trip- the outpouring of support from the community has been amazing! Thank you to everyone who contributed by booking in a session with Pradeep.

It was a long tournament for Antonia, who battled her way through 3 fights in a row, stepping into the ring on a daily basis over the three days she was in Perth. After winning two of her bouts she qualified for the finals and came home with a silver medal!

We’re proud to announce that Antonia will now be representing Australia at the Elite World Championships and flies out Wednesday to the Philippines for a training camp. Congratulations on the culmination of all your hard work Antonia! A well deserved result and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for you. All the best for the Philippines!

July 28th saw our Amateur MMA team head to war in the cage with five of our fighters representing on the card in what promised to be an Absolute takeover! Lisa “Savage” Kyriacou was up first against opponent, staying calm in the cage to take home a win via TKO in the second round through a ground and pound finish! Good to see Lisa pushing the pace forward in her fight, continually striking throughout- a great result for your debut fight Lisa, we can’t wait to see you in the cage once again.

Josh Ber was up next against opponent Jackson Dempster, showing poise beyond his 17 years of age and taking some heavy shots early on from his 22 year old opponent. He stayed calm, returned fire, scored a nice take down moving his way to the back and then secured a rear naked choke. Congratulations to Josh on his first round win!

On fight 9 of the card, Ty Woolcott fought a good first round, getting the better of the striking and scrambling back to the feet when taken down. Unfortunately Ty showed signs of fatigue in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, losing the grapple contests which cost him the decision with the fight ending in a loss. This was a tough fight and Ty showed great heart throughout, good on you for getting in there Ty!

Reon Mahima was up next for the team in a heavy weight contest. Unfortunately as they can go, he was caught with a huge left hook at the start of the contest by opponent Tautala Peau and did not get a chance to display his wrestling skills, sustaining a loss via KO.

Pippa Shaw finished up the team and the fight card for the night against opponent Amber Thompson in the Path to Hex bantamweight title match. This was a tough contest that went the full 5 rounds against a more experienced opponent, with Pippa emerging victorious from a tough scrap to claim the title! Congratulations Pippa!

It was unfortunate that Will, Souvan, Kevin and Rebecca all went unmatched or lost their opponents short notice. Let’s hope they get a chance to display their skills in the cage soon. Well done to all those that got in to compete!

Overseas, Coach Livia Gluchowska made it to the final of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tokyo 2018 (Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Tours organized by UAEJJF) and comes home a silver medallist in the 55kg female brown/black belt devision! Congratulations Liv! We couldn’t be prouder and can’t wait to hear all about your travels when you come home!

Teammate Shantelle Thompson also comes home a bronze medallist in the -90kg female brown/black belt division! Well done to Shantelle for getting in there and giving it everything she had.

To close up the week, our Absolute MMA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team headed to Grappling Industries on Sunday. We’d like to congratulate everyone who competed on the day, whether it was your first time or one of many, you were all great representatives for the gym on the mats! Special mention to Coach Lachlan “The Raptor” Giles for winning the No-Gi Absolute.

MEET THE TEAM: AMIT NARAYAN

Coach Amit Narayan is an experienced personal trainer and strength & conditioning coach, having coached for over 4 years. A man who is determined to make his best, better, Amit has trained athletes in preparation for Martial Arts, Australian Rules Football and Gridiron Football, as well as individuals for strength and weight loss. Read on to find out more about the man, Amit…the legend!

Nicknames & Fight Names?

Captain Supa Fantastico, Mittens and (Knee) Reaper

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

The time Thiago said ‘Good, Amit’.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I first joined Absolute MMA shortly after studying to be a Personal Trainer. My ultimate goal was always to be a Strength & Conditioning coach for combat athletes, and I wanted to expand my knowledge on combat sports by learning different martial arts. Furthermore, I wanted to experience the unique methods different coaches have to instructing and coaching.

I decided to checkout Absolute MMA due to its extensive timetable and central location (This is when the CBD was the only location). I was taken aback at first by Thiago’s welcoming attitude during my trial class, and the amount of time and instruction he gave me in my first class. That was my first class, and I haven’t looked back since.

Prior to commencing my personal training studies, I was working at ANZ. During my time there I was employed to complete training manuals and subsequently train staff. I enjoyed the aspect to instructing and teaching, but quickly realised how much more I would enjoy it if it were something I was passionate about, health and fitness.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favorite memory from when you were younger?

The first time I ate a margarita pizza is by far my favorite memory. Molto bene.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Flying to Absolute MMA in a jet pack.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

Being very sad, in another field.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

Brock Lesnar, he counts, right?

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

All Day Donuts, because every time I travel there, I come back with donuts.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I trained to be a professional wrestler as a teenager, my wrestling name was Captain Super Fantastico. I only took part in one match as a professional wrestler. I got kicked in the face, slammed on my bonce and pinned. It was amazing.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I often talk about my appreciation for strong, driven people. People striving to achieve their dreams and desires, is something I’ve always been drawn to. I’ve been lucky to meet and surround myself with people with goals ranging from small to global, and I’m always taken by their drive to achieve their goals.

I appreciate honest, hardworking people- that might seem an obvious choice, but is something I truly look up to. I’ve always admired an individual who can admit fault and admit when they don’t know something. It’s not a trait many people exercise, but a statement such as ‘I don’t know’ or ‘I was wrong’, can be pretty powerful.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

My life.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Train more, train harder, and sports tape is cheaper on eBay.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

I changed this question to 5 Absolute Members after consulting with Dave, these are:

Dom Vergou: Obviously
Vince Rogato: He’s my fratello, P4P Most handsome man in the gym, if the earth is to be repopulated, why wouldn’t you want these genes doing it?
Hayley Weir: Anyone who’s seen her car understands, anyone who’s heard about her fixing cars understands, anyone who’s heard her list her guns understands, anyone that’s been tapped by her understands, really this list could go on.
Maryanne Mullahy: One of the P4P strongest humans in the gym, world champion and one of the toughest people I’ve ever met. She’s also the loveliest and her art is legendary (Both the art of violence, and the art of illustration).
James ‘Jimbolinho Swolters’ Walters: Also one of the P4P strongest, THE strongest jawline, reverse sears a mean steak, and a SAVAGE.

Make no mistake, I’m the odd one out in this group, they should really leave me behind and prosper.

“Amit is a very good trainer who is always worried about his student’s form and who is focused on making people move well. He is a BJJ student, he is that guy who never puts his back on the ground…but on top he is a rock.” – Thiago Stefanutti, Coach

“I got nothing.” – Dom Vergou

“You have Amit to blame for my strength.” – Adrian Ciuffetelli

“Amit owns every UFC to date on DVD, and alphabetises everything he owns. He also will only date someone who can deadlift a car, so you can sure tell he is committed to the cause. He cares more about your lifting form than he does about his own health and well-being. All round nugget and legend.”- James Walters

“When people think of the stereotype of a strength coach, the image of an aggressive meathead who is always yelling comes to mind.  Amit, however, uses the perfect combo of humor, knowledge and passion to get his clients and athletes the strength gains they’re after.” – Darren Gn

WEEKEND RESULTS (13/07/2018 – 15/07/2018)

Our Absolute MMA Mixed Martial Arts team were back at Eternal MMA on the Gold Coast this weekend, keen to repeat our winning streak from Eternal MMA 33 (May 2018).

Josh Grove was up first in his second appearance on Eternal MMA and having brought home a win in May, was keen to repeat his result. Up against opponent Mitch Bayliss, Josh dominated the match with his wrestling and took his opponent down in a solid grappling performance. Definitely not the most conventional way for Josh to spend his birthday, however we are sure it is not one he will be forgetting anytime soon. Happy Birthday and congratulations on your win via Unanimous Decision Josh!

We had Choi Sung Wook up second for the team in his bout against Matthew Yung Lee-Manwar, who is known for his wrestling skill. Choi did well to shut down the wrestling skills of his opponent and had moments where the fight was turning in his favour, landing heavy strikes and doing significant damage. This unfortunately was not enough to win the judges favour and Choi sustained a loss via Unanimous Decision. Great to see you getting in there Choi, you’ll come back stronger for the experience and we can’t wait to see you in the octagon again.

Coach Sam Hibberd closed up the night for the team on the co-main event, against an opponent with an undefeated record, Aaron Blackie. Sam showed everything he’s been coaching the team in his MMA classes and shut down multiple takedown attempts, keeping his cool under pressure. As soon as the fighters started trading, Sam began to land strikes, building significant momentum and damage. This was a definite contender for fight of the night with a barn burner of the third round, with the judges giving Sam the win via split decision after a tough match. Congratulations Sam on a triumphant return to the cage!

Although not from Absolute MMA, we’d like to shout-out to the unsung hero (Michael Letizia) who got a point deducted at the start of his match for his glorious mullet. You the real MVP.

Sunday rolled around, and Coach Lachlan Giles represented Absolute MMA at Polaris 7 in London in his bout against Oliver Taza as the opening rounds for the welterweight championship.

This was a super technical match that went the whole distance of 15 minutes, both fighters going hard with balanced moments of attack and defence. Lachlan showed a lot of his single X game and had some excellent reversal and attacks in the match. Taza showed a super aggressive game which eventually led to the judges awarding him the match. This was an amazing, technical match and we couldn’t be prouder of Lachlan as our representative for his performance and how he conducted himself. Well done Lachlan!
