MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TIM BAKER

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! The member spotlight turns to Tim “Cabeção/Big Head” Baker, one of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu crew, husband to the “Banh Mi Brawler” Tina Trinh and expert eater. His love for desserts is only rivalled by his love for grappling (and Tina, obviously) – read on to find out more about Tim!

Occupation: BJJ Instructor/Forklift Operator

Martial Arts/Sports: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, formerly Mixed Martial Arts

How did you get into the sport?

I got into BJJ because I wanted to fight in MMA. I fell in love with BJJ, and it slowly became my sole focus.

What are your immediate training goals?

Currently just to get some momentum behind me and to train more consistently.

What are your goals for the next five years?

To keep improving, and to continue to love BJJ as much as I do now. Also to keep Tina Trinh from submitting me again as long as possible.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I love training at Absolute MMA because of all of the amazing people I get to train and hang out with. There’s a really diverse group of amazing people training across all locations and classes, and it’s easy to forge great friendships.

What is your favourite move?

Probably either a kimura or reverse triangle.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Eating, I also enjoy playing video games when I get time.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m from a small city in Essex called Chelmsford. I ended up living in Melbourne through introduction by my wife Tina Trinh. We met in Thailand where I was training for 6 months in 2013/2014, did long distance and I ended up moving to Melbourne.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

I would say that I look up to people that are extremely skilled at something, but are still grounded, humble and helpful. Luckily enough, we have lots of those people at Absolute MMA!

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I have so many places I love to eat in Melbourne, but I would probably have to say our house, as Tina is a pretty mean cook… Not that you could tell from my waistline!!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I would tell myself to look after my body and probably start doing weights sooner.

“He’s all strength, uses his weight and no technique! Hahahah that’s what he hates hearing and that’s what I tell him all the time when we roll, it gets him mad. The reality is, he IS all strength, uses his weight at the right times, and is ALL about technique, which if you ask anyone, is a very deadly combination- Tim is good at what he does and we have lots of fun (and sometimes too competitive) rolls. Although he doesn’t go easy on me (as if I would let him!), he can be, and is the complete gentleman to anyone else that he rolls with (just not to his own wife). He is also constantly teaching me stuff, even though according to him I never listen” – Tina Trinh, wife

“Tim has a massive head that disturbs the classes, likes doughnut rash guards and he gets angry when Tina puts apples in his bag instead of bananas…his jiu-jitsu is fine.” – Thiago Stefanutti, Head BJJ Coach

“One of the most nicest and most dangerous dudes I know. Always willing to help a brother out. His kimura trap will mess you up.” – Kevin Lau

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Becoming the Australian National Black Belt Featherweight Champion.

What made you start Martial Arts?

Watching “Enter the Dragon”.

Favorite workout/walkout song?

Top Gun opening theme (not danger zone the one before it).

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Rubens Charles Maciel, Lucas Lepri, the Mendes brothers and Marcio Andre. All amazing Jiu-Jitsu athletes.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

Medium size cat, maybe a Leopard. Great movers, but they also sleep most of the day.

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

Southern California. I love the spacious cities, cali-mex food and constant sun.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Philosophy, design, learning Portuguese, economics and gymnastics.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Those who pursue the truth and are open to discussing ideas logically.

Handstands!

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Il Bacaro, I recommend the cheesecake from the dessert menu.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Top Gun, Apocalypse Now, Goodfellas, Casino and the whole Godfather series.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

John Stuart Mill’s books On Liberty and Utilitarianism.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Go train some form of grappling or boxing.

“Whether he’s helping people on their mat improve their BJJ technique, discussing politics post training or hanging upside down the chin-up bar, Michael will continue to be amazingly positive and welcoming. Awesome to have Michael as a coach and friend!” – Rob Pelle

“Michael Hourigan, a true gentleman and artist of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Not only does have more knowledge and talent than most; he is funny, charismatic and an all round top bloke. He’s such an asset to the gym and we’re very lucky to have him. I’m grateful of the knowledge he has passed down to me and grateful of the many rolls we have had.” – Mikael Yahaya

WEEKEND RESULTS (22/06/2018 – 24/06/2018)

This weekend saw the much anticipated BOA Super 8: 4th Edition roll around on Saturday night (23/06/2018) at Springers Leisure Centre. The team has been looking forward to this event, with many of our competition team putting in hard rounds in the weeks before to prepare. It;s exciting to see such a high level professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event coming to Melbourne!

First up was Tine Scheldeman, a new addition to the team who lost via ref decision in an exciting fight. Good on you for getting in there and we’re glad to have you on board! Looking forward to seeing you in future competitions.

Second from the team was Jeremy Paul Skinner who won via a beautifully executed inside heelhook earning the praise of commentators, coaches and crowd alike. We are sure we’ll be seeing more of this talented young man on the competition scene in the future.

Third was Coach Livia Gluchowska finishing her fight via heelhook after building up a healthy points lead. Livia showed amazing control and pressure from the top along with a killer finishing instinct in a beautiful mix of old school pressure and new school leg attacks.

Fourth and next up was Coach Mikael Yahaya going up against jiu-jitsu superstars Thalison Soares. Mikael put forward a valiant effort, however, he eventually succumbed to the strong berimbolo game of Soares and was finished from the back,

Thiago Stefanutti was part of a super exciting battle against Pasha Stoylar, eventually losing by 2 points. Thiago evaded numerous early attacks with heart and skill and mounted his own offence to make it an action packed and memorable match.

Finishing up the night was the 88kg tournament with two of our black belts in the mix, Craig Jones and Ben Hodgkinson. Both did us proud, with Ben winning on points against James Brasco after coming close to multiple kimura attempts. Ben went through to the second round to go up against Craig in an Absolute MMA clash that did not go Ben’s way, despite making a statement and coming out with serious intent in the highly popular “F**K Craig Jones” rash guard from Craig’s recent seminar.

Craig won a hard fought match in his first round against an always game Bob Frias coming close to finishing submissions, but ultimately taking the victory via points. Craig then went on to finish Ben via heelhook in the semifinal. In the final against DJ Jackson Craig made a tactical decision to pull guard, which ultimately cost him the match via penalty point.

Congratulations to all of the athletes for representing Absolute MMA so well, and to all our members and team mates who showed their support by attending or streaming the event. We’re proud to be part of such an active competition team and have you all on board!

Sunday afternoon rolled around and our Boxing team along with Coach Pradeep Singh headed to The 2018 Frank Quill Cup at the MVC Boxing Gym to support Absolute MMA Fighter of the Year (2017) Antonia Kay in her elite world championship trial (female).

Antonia put up a good fight in her bout against Kristy Harris (four time Australian Champion), however eventually sustained a loss via decision. We’d like to commend Antonia on her excellent attitude and focus on her goals- she has so much potential and we can’t wait to see her in the ring again for the next trial in Perth. Well done Antonia!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TINA TRINH

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! The member spotlight turns to Tina Trinh, our Iron-fisted Chef and Banh Mi Brawler! She punches, kicks, grapples and cooks (check out her Instagram – @food_by_tina ) for not only herself, but everyone else (most notably, husband Tim Baker). Read on to find out more about this absolute super woman!

Occupation: Compliance analyst for an Industry fund/ feeder of Tim Baker

Martial Arts/Sports: Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

How did you get into the sport?

My origin story is quite boring and tame. I used to go to my local suburban leisure center to workout- think body pump group workouts with suburban mums and middle aged ladies. I used to do laps up and down the pool trying to overtake the 80 year old Croatian grandmother who would walk up and down the lap lane to help with her arthritis. I was bored and wanted to change things up, so in 2012, I decided to try martial arts- I went to a gym that did Muay Thai, JKD, Kali Arnis and Boxing. Then in 2014 I decided I’d go to Thailand for a training holiday, and trained at a MMA gym where I got my first taste doing BJJ. The rest, as they say, is history.

What are your immediate training goals?

After my last MMA fight which saw me receive a fractured orbital- shout out to my very supportive husband who flew interstate to Queensland and drove me back to Melbourne (18 hrs over 2 days!) while getting dirty looks for my bunged up face, my immediate training goals are…to get back into the cage (haha). I’ve had some time off since then and I feel ready to get back into it, yeah it sucked at the time, but the lifespan of a cage fighter can be so short. I want to make the most of it while I’m still young and capable.

What are your goals for the next five years?

To be still training and cartwheel passing my haters. More comps, be it BJJ or MMA. I also want to try Schwingen! Look it up! It’s the Swiss version of wrestling- its essentially a national sport over there, and they do it up in the Swiss Alps. Definitely a bucket list item for me is to one day travel there, and try my hand at one of their competitions!

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

The thing I love about Absolute MMA is that I get to train with the best coaches and teammates, people who aren’t just workout proximity associates- but people who I’d be okay with being seen out on the streets with (haha)! You guys are good friends, cliches of cliches, you’re a second family to me. Perhaps there’s something about choking each other out or punching one another in the face that engenders some sort of camaraderie, but it’s totally there.

Absolute MMA also has great facilities, a packed timetable and three different locations within Melbourne, so you’re never short of new or different training partners, and now are even located in Shanghai and Phuket. I’ve even had the privilege to train at the Phuket location! Hold back the tears readers, but yes, I’m proud to be a part of such an amazing gym. (I’ll take my payment for writing this article in Absolute reward points, thanks!)

What is your favorite move?

For those that have rolled with me (in BJJ), they’d say the cartwheel pass, but because I’ve been given so much shit about it by *ahem*…a few people (clearly the haters are just jealous and wish they could do a cartwheel as well as me), I’ve tried to change my game up a bit (and also so people can feel less inadequate about their cartwheels). Right now though, I suppose my favorite move is either the low single take down- it helps that I’m so short and so low to the ground already (haha), and I also like a double leg take down with an outside trip.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m from Melbourne, I was born here and I have lived here all my life. My parents are from Vietnam though and came here as refugees in the 1980s. I grew up with two older brothers and always rough housed with them, and was sometimes forced to watch WWE…and have the moves re-enacted on me. All I wanted to do was watch the Powerpuff Girls!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Tall people, because I’m short and I need to look up to them to talk them.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

B’churrasco (an all you can eat Brazilian BBQ joint in the city) or Gorilla Grill (East meets West kind of vibe Burger joint). The picanha rump is bomb at B’churrasco (and steer clear of their carbs, the real deal is in the meat!), and Gorilla Grill’s King Kong burger (Double beef patty, fried chicken, special sauce and pork belly) and Kimchi Loaded Fries. Perfect places for the weight cutting athlete or a post comp feed.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

You’re awkward as f**k, god you’re embarrassing. Don’t spaz. Relax.

…Oh wait, I still need to tell myself that everyday.

“Tina is a beast trapped in a tiny body. She’s strong and fast and cooks bloody drool worthy meals. There are times when I thought I took Tina down successfully with a takedown but nekminit I’m tapping to an arm bar. Too fast for the naked eye!” – Yvonne Chow

“Tina is a cartwheeling, pressure passing, super energetic woman! She may have a resting b*tch face, but she is actually pretty friendly for the most part. Tina loves to mess about and have fun, talk smack, and (most importantly) cook up a storm for her friends!” – Tim Baker, husband

“One of the toughest girls I know who has fighting skills that matches her culinary skills.” – Kevin Lau

“”Tina is a powerhouse! I remember the first time I rolled her I thought I better go easy cause I was so much bigger…only to find that I immediately had to start defending myself. Not only is she a beast on the mats, she hosts the best get togethers and is an amazing cook. She taught me to make breakfast burritos!” – Maryanne Mullahy

I was born in Malaysia but grew up in New Zealand. I started Aikido during uni before picking up kick boxing/muay thai at the Ray Sefo Fight Academy. I then headed to Bangkok and spent a week training at Muay Thai Plaza 2004 and fell in love with travelling. After graduation I did Camp America working as a counselor at a ranch for at risk youth. I then returned to NZ and saved up my annual leave and spent a month volunteering in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Nat also runs a ladies lifting society designed for females to learn to lift weights in a supportive and like-minded community. Read on to find out more about Nat!

What made you start Martial Arts?

I wanted a form of hard exercise to do for me, that was away from my personal training clients that would push me mentally as well as physically.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I moved from another club when our coach Tao set up the Muay Thai program at Collingwood.

Mantra/Quote to live by?

Do it like you mean it.

Other than “keep your hands up idiot”? When you think you are tired, you always push more.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

People who are un-apologetically themselves, I think we sometimes spend too much time concerned with what others think about us.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Hmmmm…this is hard because- do I want a killer team to fight them off, or just people I can out run so they get eaten first?  I think I’d have to pick our killer female only zombie squad, Claire Fury, Maryanne and Liv.

‘Nat has a wealth of knowledge which she has gained over years of competing at high levels of different sports such as CrossFit and Muay Thai. This has made her a fantastic trainer who knows how to motivate clients from all walks of life- she is not afraid to push them in order for them to meet their goals’ – Sam Hibberd

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: YVONNE CHOW

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! The member spotlight turns to Yvonne Chow, one of our Mixed Martial Arts ladies and a savage southpaw with a heart of gold.

Occupation: HR Manager

Martial Arts/Sports: Mixed Martial Arts

How did you get into the sport?

Initially I got into the sport for fitness. I was always kind of intrigued with the idea of sparring someone but had always been too afraid to try it. I thought martial artists had to start training as kids and that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but that’s not the case at Absolute!

What are your immediate training goals?

I’d like to get fit, gain as many new skills and perfect existing skills.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Thiago jump-scares me every time I come in to train. In the next five years, I plan to develop the inner strength and alertness to sense when he’s around. One day I might even be able to return the jump-scare… but a girl can only dream.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I’ve been training at Absolute for like 4 years now and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Everyone is super friendly and just happy to help. My training partners all care about my progress and I am same to them as well.

What is your favourite move?

Single leg take down (it’s super ugly right now but I’m working on it!).

Favourite workout/walkout song?

X Gon Give It To Ya.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

A little gin, a little tonic and a dash of grapefruit juice.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Not many people, because I’m taller than most (dad joke, I know).

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Ma Xiao Er (Carlton) – hot pot place with the most delicious broth!

“Don’t let her pretty made up face and big hair fool you, she will mess you up with her crazy strong hooks. Best training partner ever! (Minus messing up my arm right before my first fight).” – Nina Le, training partner

“Yvonne has the biggest heart in the gym. She gets scared everyday and she never has a heart attack. I’m helping her test her heart.” – Thiago Stefanutti

“Yvonne always trys hard and listens to instructions. When she gives, she gives 100%. Her style of fighting is do or die. To me as a coach, I always believe in her style…she’s a southpaw like me! Lefty Lady! I am glad to have her as my student.” – Laos Toohey

WEEKEND RESULTS (01/06/2018 – 03/06/2018)

The first weekend of June saw our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team busy both locally at Aus Sub Only and internationally at the IBJJF 2018 Worlds in Long Beach, California. Our MMA boys also made moves interstate, with Finnian Kinsella and Rob Pelle heading to South Australia for MMA Rising Stars 2 run by Diamondback Fighting Championship.

Friday, 1st of June saw Finnian Kinsella and our main man from Absolute MMA St Kilda, Rob Pelle, head to South Australia for MMA Rising Stars 2 under the guidance of Coach Jordan Lucas. Both our boys fought against some of Adelaide’s best talents in their matches. Finn was up first, facing against opponent Brad Walley. Finn had him on the back foot early in the fight, coming forward with crisp, fast striking and we’re proud to report he handled his own. He defended against multiple take-down attempts in the opening round, however in round two and three the strength of his opponent took over. Walley landed take-downs in the later rounds, and these ultimately won him the fight by judges decision. Finn got put in positions that most would struggle to get out of, and that many would take the easy way out in. He showed nothing but heart and continued to fight hard until the very end.

Rob fought well known Adelaide prodigy Anthony Pugliese in the co-main event which was also acknowledged as “Fight of the Night”. From the opening round these two undefeated fighters went head to head, with many good exchanges and a lot of exciting scrambles. Both boys had won a round each going into the last round, with Rob gaining momentum from a dominating second round in which he managed to shut down all of his opponents guillotine attempts. The third round was razor close again until Pugliese managed to capitalize on a guillotine choke (of which he is well known for) late in the third which saw a submission end to the fight.

Although both our boys saw a loss, there are positives to come with every negative, both boys tested themselves against two of Adelaide’s top amateurs and will only come back stronger from the experience. You can choose to take easy fights or you can choose to take opportunities to test yourself against hard opponents, in order to reach where you want to be in the future. We know what we have to work on and exactly how we are going to do it, so look forward to seeing both boys back in the win column very soon! You both are great representatives for the gym and tough as nails.

It was a weekend full of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu action with the IBJJF World Championships taking place in Long Beach, California. It was great to see the Absolute MMA team out in force as well as so many fellow Australians competing in LA! From our team we had Livia Gluchowska, Lauren Thompson, Sarah Chapman, Chisaki Akiyama, Jacinta Quattrocchi, Lisa Boyd, Hugh Boyd, Seth Crossman and Sean Le Gourrierec all competing. Shout outs to Sarah Chapman who won three matches before meeting the eventual Gold medallist in her fourth and Livia Gluchowska who won her first match (27-0), unfortunately then losing in the quarterfinal in the last 10 seconds, by an advantage.

Whether you came to win or learn, we couldn’t be prouder of our Absolute MMA BJJ team for making it to World 2018, for conducting themselves professionally and being amazing representatives for the gym. Well done to you all!

Congratulations in particular to our fellow Australian Levi Jones-leary who fought his way to gold to became the lightweight brown belt world champion. You have worked so hard and there is no one more deserving!

We would also like to congratulate everyone from our Absolute MMA team who competed locally at AUS SUB ONLY this weekend including staff members and coaches Apryl Eppinger, Lachlan Warne, Richard Lattemagi (stepping up to cover teammate James Walters who unfortunately was ill) and Mikael Yahaya who faced Rob Sabaruddin in a super fight. It was great to see so many of our members also competing from all three of our gyms!

The Absolute MMA competitors also took away the no-gi team trophy as a unit and we couldn’t be prouder. Well done to the entire team and congratulations on the culmination of all your dedication and hard work!

Craig Jones because nothing bad ever happens to him, Mikael Yahaya because the zombies would get him first and Adam Jones because he would make it fun.

“Lachlan Warne is the silent assassin. He is a kind and gentle soul. But don’t let that fool you. He has phenomenal technique and he is an absolute savage on the mats. “He’s as physically weak as he looks.” – Craig Jones
