FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (05/04/2019 – 07/04/2019)

Our Mixed Martial Arts team got it started for the crew in Adelaide this weekend, flying to South Australia to compete on Eternal MMA 43. First up in Adelaide we had Jake Savic against opponent Luke Vidler, who put in a really dominant performance, taking down his opponent at will and landing some heavy shots early in the first round. In the second round he battled to get the takedown, eventually did get it and was dominating in top position, but unfortunately got caught in an armbar and submitted at the 2.28 minute mark.

Jason Gunawan showed a very complete performance, managed the striking transition between striking and grappling really well, to win the first round through striking and controlling the position. In the second round, he came out strong to take his opponent down, waited patiently for his opponent to turn, completed a nice backtake at the right moment and then followed up with a rear naked choke putting his opponent to sleep.

Imantha Alahakoon put in a gutsy performance, he was outclassed by a more experienced grappler, but he fought with no quit in him at all. Super proud of Iman’s effort as he took on an opponent with significant experience, having intially been matched against a white belt. Just got outclassed on the ground unfortunately for Iman, but he went the distance, losing via decision, having fought through to the very end. Great job Iman, you’ll be back stronger for the experience!

Last weekend also saw our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team showcase their skills on the mats at The Victorian Jiu Jitsu Championship (VJJC 2019), spread across Saturday and Sunday at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. It was great to see so many of our staff and members from Collingwood, St Kilda and Melbourne CBD competing on the day, a huge thank you to all the friends and family who came down to support the Absolute MMA team. As a team, we received a total of 16 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals. To everyone who competed and received medals, we would like to congratulate you on continuing to challenge yourself and moving forward in your BJJ journey!

We had some standout performances on the day, including Constandinos Haritou, who won the Absolute Male Gi Open (blue belt, adult) and Clay Lyne who competed both the Saturday and Sunday, coming back strong on the second day after a loss on the first to take away gold in the blue belt No-Gi medium heavy division (5-1) and silver in the absolute blue belt No-Gi open weight.

We would also like to highlight Rio Iskandar‘s performance in the No Gi white belt light divison. Rio did a great job, showing off some clean sweeps and taking away silver for his efforts! Great result for Rio, who kept his head in the game to secure the win given he was coming off a loss in the gi. Check out more results from the championship here.

Thank you to head coach Thiago Stefanutti and all our amazing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coaches who help our students grow in confidence and technique daily through their classes. We are lucky enough to have a strong community at all three of our gyms and our students could not achieve the results they have without the support of all their training partners and coaches!

Our striking team also stepped up to prove themselves, with Saturday seeing several of our aspiring amateur Muay Thai team head to Stan the Man Fitness Academy for the Stan The Man Cup 7 “Quest for Greatness”. This event saw the majority of our six of our fighters making their debut in the ring and testing their training for the first time!

Up first for the team was Licia Yeo, who faced off against a much more experienced opponent in Cathy Santos from Forged Warriors in an exhibition match. This was a very exciting fight to watch with plenty of back and forth action! It was a tough match, but Licia listened well to her corner and stuck to her game plan, throwing great combitions and well placed kicks and punches in a consistent pace throughout all three rounds. This epic war resulted in a draw, and Licia and her opponent being awarded fight of the day! Well done Licia on an impressive debut, we look forward to seeing you back in the ring for the next one!

Joseph Choundary made his debut against an experienced opponent in Noah Hamilton (6 interclubs, 4 wins, 2 losses). A solid, dominant first round from Joe, who displayed clean and sharp technique, stuck to the game plan and listened well to his corner. In the second round Joe sustained an illegal knee to the face and a deep cut across the nose which began to bleed profusely. After receiving prompt medical attention, the bout was ruled a no contest. We’re proud of Joe and how he held himself in the ring! Great work Joe, we wish you a speedy recovery.

In our third debut for the team, Rebekkah Dimase faced off against Leah Maxwell from Forged Warriors (Adelaide). An awesome debut from Bek who threw some brutal leg chops and body kicks, coming out strong in the first round. Her opponent’s experience showed, and the last two rounds were hard going on Bek, but she pressed on, showing a lot of heart, continuing to return fire consistently and throwing combinations. The bout ended up in a close decision loss for Bek, but lots to take away and we are so proud of her on getting in the ring, not an easy thing to do in the first place. We would like to wish Bek all the best in her travels to the UK, and look forward to seeing how her martial arts journey progressing!

Jasmine Choundary followed her brother into the ring, finishing up for the Choundary siblings for the day against her opponent Holly Davy. Jasmine did struggle in the first two rounds with her opponent’s strong forward pressure, but managed to win the first round on points. The third round saw Jasmine begin to integrate punches with strong kicks, breaking her opponents will to keep fighting. With the round looking to progress towards a potential KO, Jasmine’s opponent was granted a 30 second rest in which she was encouraged to complete the fight with 20 seconds to go in the final round. A controversial draw for Jasmine in the end, but it is all experience gained and we would like to congratulate Jasmine on a great debut!

Wilhelm Sisouw stepped into the ring next, fighting K1 rules against Mike Jia from Stan the Man Fitness Academy. Great performance from Will, who consistently returned kicks throughout the bout, and finished strong with a dominant final round. Will’s match resulted in a draw with the fight going the distance but we would like to congratulate him on showcasing his skill and a match well fought! Can’t wait to see you back in the ring Will!

Ben Ambas finished up for the team at the interclub, in a 3 x 2 minute round match up against Mislav Horvat. An even match up, in which Ben displayed good aggression, however the mental game got the better of him and his technique began to slide. An eventual loss for Ben via decision, however lots to take away and learn from, and Ben will be back stronger for his experience! Great work on getting in there Ben!

Thank you to all our students from Absolute MMA, and the friends and family who came to support. We would also like to extend our thanks to Coaches Laos Toohey, Jeremy Wharerau, and fight team members Georgia Verry, Fei Yen and Andre Nguyen who took the time to come down and support the team in the corner. Thank you also to Stan the Man Fitness Academy for having us an our team compete, and a job well done to all our students who fought hard!

The Muay Thai team continued to represent into the night on Saturday, with two of our students going to war on Hardcore Promotions at the Frankston Arts Centre. Danielle Franks was up first on fight one of the card, matched against Julie Balteskard (Supafight Gym) in a 3x2minute round bout at 60kg (mod-thai rules). Against a tough southpaw opponent, Danni kept the pressure on by staying busy and using her right cross and right kick. Strong performance from Danni who secured the win via unaimous points decision.

Fight three on the card came around, and Josh Grove stepped into the ring against opponent Jaiden Olive in a 3×2 minute round bout at 67kg. This was a very close fight for Josh and a great one to watch! Josh fought well against a strong opponent who favoured the clinch, with Josh holding his own at range. In a fight that could have gone either way, Josh came out of it just short to sustain a loss via split points decision. Great to see Josh back at it with us after his stint in Thailand, we look forward to what the rest of the year holds for him!

Subversion Jiu-Jitsu Invitational rolled around Sunday, and “Team ‘Steal Yo Girl” went to throw down on the quintet in Chullora. Comprised of Mikael Yahaya, Jeremy Paul Skinner, Keller Locke Sodhi, Lachlan Warne and Matt McGuinness. Despite the team sustaining a loss, it was great to see some high level grappling on display. Better luck next time boys!

Saturday, 6th of April at Novice MMA 9 at Adrenaline MMA saw two of our amateur MMA team test themselves in competition! Danielle Stevens was up first for the team, an showed impressive form for her second fght. She won both round in dominant fashion against Jess Beatson of Adrenaline MMA and was awarded the unanimous decision victory. We’re super proud of the way Danni conducted herself both in and outside of the ring. Congratulations Danni!

Next up for the team was Lou Kang against Jean Bezzine (Sting Gym Frankston). This was a fantastic fight with both competitors leaving it all in the ring. Initally set to go for just two rounds, they added in a third given how close the fight was. Despite Lou losing via split decision in the third, he should be very proud of his performance. Looking forward to seeing where Lou takes his martial arts journey next!

The eight man no-gi tournament at Kasai Pro 5 saw Craig Jones‘ first match as a relatively slow paced match against a strategic Pedro Marinho who was unwilling to engage, with the match ending in a draw. In Craig’s second match he beat Jon Blank via RNC after an impressive and crowd pleasing back-take. In the third match of the tournament Craig got his back taken and submitted by the eventual winner Kaynan Duarte. Finally, Craig defeated Jackson Sousa via straight ankle lock to earn himself a well deserved third place. In his post-match interview he expressed his disappointment, but also reminded the crowd – much to their delight – that it ‘was still a more exciting match than Palhares!’. Congratulations on your impressive perfomances out there Craig!

THAI FIGHT RESULTS (30/03/2019)

Last Saturday night, we were proud to have two of our fighters from Absolute MMA Thailand on ‘Thai Fight’ (established in 2010), one of Thailand’s biggest Muay Promotions. Held in Nakhon Si Thammarat, southern city of Thailand, this event celebrating the 10th anniversary of Thai Fight saw our fighters Alexander Whelin and Javad Bigdeli take on the big show! Alexander took on one of the top Thai fighters, Samingdej Dejfaifa, with over 100 fights to his name and Javad took on the famous Saenchai, headlining the show for the evening.

Despite both our boys being stopped early, we are proud to have two of our fighters representing the gym on the biggest stage in Thailand and look forward to what the future holds for both fighters. Looking forward to seeing you both back in the ring, stronger for experience gained!

FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (29/03/2019-31/03/2019)

It was a big night for our Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai teams last Friday with Ultimate Legends IX kicking off in Sunshine at the Westend Market Hotel, and the much anticipated Hex Fight Series 18 at Melbourne Pavilion. Coach Darren Gn was up first for the team, facing an undefeated home favourite on home ground from Ultimate Muay Thai. In a 3 round match under K1 rules, Darren was composed throughout, and very clearly calm in the ring. Using his range and reach well, Darren dominated the fight from the opening round, piling on the low kicks and body rips! Coach Laos Toohey and Albert Xavier both noted that Darren listened well to them in the corner, utilized his footwork to great effect and remained level-headed. Congratulations to Darren on taking away a well-deserved win via unanimous decision and on a great performance, it is clear how much work Darren has put into his fight game in recent weeks, and we would like to highlight that his technical skill truly is on another level! He has done his friends, family, team mates and coach very proud. As the main event for the evening, Albert “Timorese Assassin” Xavier stepped up against opponent Abbas “Golden Boy” Ahmadi, a long time veteran and former world champion with over 120 fights in a title match for the Welterweight Commonwealth title. In a 5 round bout with full Thai rules, Albert confidentally fought a clean and technical battle, making use of the push kick to keep his opponent at bay, and consistently landing combinations.  He stuck to the game plan, scoring three takedowns, rocking his opponent and catching him off balance with his cross and hook on numerous occasions through out the fight. Great to see Albert using his swift, clean boxing combinations to get the better of Abbas, who is known for his strong kicks. In the later rounds, both fighters picked up the intensity, however the match ended up going Alby’s way. A well deserved win via SPD for Albert and we’d like to congratulate him on his shiny new title belt! Champion! Great night for the Muay Thai team with two wins, thank you to everyone who made the trek down to Sunshine to support the boys, and of course a huge thank you to Coach Laos Toohey and Anthony Trejo for their hard work and support in the corner. It was great to see so many faces in the crowd from the gym! Meanwhile, back towards central Melbourne at the heritage listed Melbourne Pavilion, one of the most anticipated events for our MMA team, Hex Fight Series 18 was also underway! It was a three man show for the team, with Coaches Kevin Jousset and Kaan Ofli, and sambo practitioner Bekhzod Usmonov set to jump into the fray. New to the team and all the way from Tajikistan after training in Thailand, Bek was keen to prove himself to an Australian audience in the cage. Up against opponent Michael Barber, in the first and second rounds, Bek dominated with his wrestling skills, scoring a lot of takedowns and landing strikes. As the fight progressed into the third round, the high energy output of the earlier rounds left Bek with little in the tank for the last round, his opponent aggressively putting on the pressure through sharp strikes. It was a close fight, with the judges ultimately scoring in favour to Bek’s opponent, resulting in a loss for Bek via UPD. Job well done to Bek who took the fight on short notice, not the result we wanted, but he’ll be back in the cage soon and stronger for the experience! Next up for the team in the cage saw Coach Kevin “Monster” Jousset make his professional MMA debut against opponent Sam McNally. Wasting no time, Kevin landed heavy strikes after the opening bell of the first round, dropping McNally, who to his credit soldiered on, getting to his feet to throw a body kick at Kevin. Kevin aggressively took control of the fight, finishing off his opponent with his striking skills, with the referee stepping in to put a stop to the onslaught. Hats off to McNally who got up in a situation where not a lot of people would have, and of course massive congratulations to Kevin on a great start to his professional career! This marks Kevin’s FIFTH fight in a row where he has secured a win in the first round via knockout. Coach “Genghis” Kaan Ofli closed up for the Absolute team at Hex for the night, matched up against opponent Scott “Mad Dog” Macgregor. With both fighters known to finish fights before the final round, this was always going to be an explosive match! The fight opened with a few exchanges between the two on the feet, with Macgregor shooting eventually for a takedown. Kaan countered with a front head lock, using it to get back to his feet. Wrestling his opponent against the cage and showing great control, Kaan took him down quickly to work to the back and sink in a RNC for the win! A great performance from Kaan, who secured the submission just one minute into his bout. This brings Kaan to an impressive win streak of THREE in a row. What a weapon! We look forward to seeing you back in the cage again soon. To finish up the weekend for the team on Sunday, Tina Trinh and Tim Baker, our in house Melbourne CBD power couple went to throw down on Slap Jiu Jitsu 3 (Combat Jiu-Jitsu) in Hobart. This is a promotion created by All Styles Grappling. Tim finished his match within the first two minutes on the mats, after a throw from his opponent Tim transitioned from the bottom to secure a knee bar for the win. Slick performance from Tim, a very well-deserved win! It was a hard slog for Tina against opponent Claudia Gulino, and after over 11 minutes of aggressive back and forth on the mats, it went to overtime. Great work from Tina who has been training hard and working on her grappling, she showed great control in the match and was declared the winner via EBI overtime. Congratulations to Tina! FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (20/03/2019 – 25/03/2019)

Our Absolute MMA Thailand team got the team started this week on Wednesday with Yousef Gorgis taking away another win at Bangla Boxing Stadium! Yousef had his opponent on shaky legs in the second round, continuing to apply a high output of pressure to finish his opponent with a huge left hand. Yousef has now won 2 fights in the past month by K.O, and is in fantastic form. We look forward to seeing your next fight!

The boys from Phuket continued their run of great results on Friday night when Florian Advic and Benjamin Roberts took to the ring at Bangla Stadium. Florian had some great success in his bout with the low kick, securing 2 knockdowns in the second round, before getting the TKO stoppage in the 4th round! Congratulations also to Ben Roberts, who used his reach very well to set up his bigger shots early on in the fight. Late in the second round, the referee had seen enough damage and stepped in to put a stop to the action. Fantastic result for Ben, as this fight resulted in him becoming a Bangla Stadium champion! Two very impressive KOs from the boys, and we couldn’t be prouder.

We’re also excited to announce that our fighter Javad Turk is matched against the famous Saenchai on Thai Fight on March 30th! It is looking to be a big night for the team with Absolute MMA Thailand fighter Alexander Welin also matched against Samingdej Dejfaifa on the same card. Best of luck guys!

Back home in Australia, Friday was also shaping up to be a big night for the Muay Thai team, with “Smokin” Joe Coverdale also set to go to war on Eruption Muay Thai in Queensland. Coach Laos Toohey and Joe flew up to the sunny state on Thursday, aiming to put on a show for the crowd at Eagle Sports Complex in Mansfield. Even to us viewing the live stream back home, it was clear that the venue was packed out, and the crowd keen to see some action!

Up against an undefeated opponent in Albert Tuua, Joe moved forward consistently, displaying great control of the ring. Joe looked to establish the clinch in his game, struggling in the early rounds to keep a consistent hold on an evasive opponent in Tuua. In the last round, Joe did engage the clinch more frequently, however, didn’t manage to catch up on points. Despite a loss via UPD, nothing but respect for Joe on a great performance against a strong opponent. We look forward to what the rest of the year brings for Joe!

Saturday rolled around, and our Amateur MMA team went to work on the Wimp 2 Warrior card with both Danielle Steven and Luke Giannoukas matched, and stepping up under the guidance of Coach Simon Carson. Luke did well, debuting in his first MMA fight! Luke has been training consistently for the last 6 months and deserves the opportunity to have his first fight. He shot for a takedown early, got held down in position but held his nerve and stayed composed. The second round went a very similar way, with Luke shooting for an early takedown, getting sprawled on and held down but remaining patient, waiting for his opportunity to come up on top. Luke then successfully moved forward to mount to get a ground and pound victory! Congratulations Luke on a well fought bout and well deserved victory!

Danielle had a really high-quality fight against a strong opponent with significant karate experience. In what would be a fight fought completely in stand up, in the first round Danielle lost on two judges cards, so looked to be at a disadvantage in a split first round. Picking things back up in the second round, Danielle finished extremely strongly, almost finishing her opponent here. Great to see Danielle coming out with the win, thank you to coaches Simon Carson and Glen Fraser, and fight team members Lisa Kyriacou and Jake Savic for their support on the day!

Saturday night saw the much-anticipated rematch between Coach Joe Boobyer and opponent Chris Bradford come around on Powerplay 40 for the IWKBF World Muaythai Heavyweight Title, held at Melbourne Pavilion. Joe fought a five-round war, giving up significant size, and was often on the backfoot, but countered whenever Chris came forward. Strong performance from Joe, who we felt got the better of all the striking exchanges, however often did move backward while doing so. With more significant shots landed by Joe, we felt he out-pointed his opponent, unfortunately, the judges didn’t see it that way and rewarded Chris for his aggression in walking forward, with the fight ending in a decision loss for Joe.

It was a big weekend for our Absolute MMA Shanghai Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team with the SJJCF no gi Shanghai Jiu-jitsu Open taking place for 2019! Great efforts from our Absolute MMA Shanghai team who took 1st place as a team overall for No-Gi and 2nd overall for Gi. With this location just recently celebrating their 1 year anniversary of opening, we couldn’t be prouder of this result! Great work team!

We would also like to extend our congratulations to all of our Shanghai students who competed and medalled, please find the following list detailing our total amount of medals from the team:

ABSOLUTE MMA THAILAND RESULTS – BANGLA STADIUM (03/03/2019)

The Absolute MMA Thailand team went to war last weekend at Bangla Stadium! Previously on Bangla Road, this well-known stadium in Patong retained its name after moving to its new, larger location opposite Banzaan Market on Sai Kor Road (behind Jungceylon Shopping Mall). First up was our young gun and former lumpini stadium fighter, Toom Kraisit. After a great performance, Toom lost a very close decision against a strong opponent. Well done Toom, we can’t wait to see you fight again!

Our Frenchman Javad Turk returned to the ring looking to continue his winning streak and capture the Bangla Championship Belt. We would like to congratulate Javad, who succeeded and took away the win! Javad came away with a hard fought, second round K.O after delivering some punishing elbow strikes.

Congratulations also to Absolute MMA Thailand’s newest sponsored fighter, Yousef Gorgis. This was Yousef’s first time back in the ring in 8 months and he showed no sign of ring rust! Yousef continued to pour on the pressure in his bout, finishing off his opponent in the 1st round with some devastating knees to the body. Great work Yousef, what a return to the ring!

Thank you to our coaches and teammates who came to support the fighters, we could not have achieved the results that we have without your guidance!

FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (01/03/2019 – 03/03/2019)

It was the Absolute MMA striking team’s time to shine this weekend with four of our Muay Thai team stepping into the ring at Roots 10: Sun Is Shining on Saturday (02/03/2019) and six of our Boxing team competing in a inter-club competition at Ultimate Muay Thai on Sunday (03/03/2019). Our Absolute MMA Thailand team had two Muay Thai bouts in the works, with Phillip Engeroff’s rematch against Chanajon PK Saenchai  on Thai Fight, and fighter Nissanth set to appear at Bangla Stadium. In colder parts of the world, Jake “The Honey Bear” Heun flew to Siberia, Russia to fight on Sunday in a bout on RIZIN.

It was a hot weekend for Melbourne, with temperatures hitting 36°C at Roots 10: Sun Is Shining, but the community was nonetheless excited for Roots/Rebellion with the promotion moving for the first time to its new location at The Timber Yard in Port Melbourne. The Absolute MMA team was out in force to support our four Muay Thai fighters appearing on the card at Roots, Andre Nguyen, Georgia Verry, Fei Yen and Kyle Leung. Andre was up first for the team, in his debut at Roots against opponent Kiayl Bruce, and after a dominant first round, his fight was called off due to an unfortunate issue with the ring. We would like to wish all the best to Andre as he recovers from a couple of very nasty burns on the soles of his feet.

Quickly reacting to the issue with the ring, the Rebellion Muay Thai team shifted the crowd and the fighters inside the hall, where the fights resumed. Georgia “The Blonde Bomber” Verry was up next for the team (54kg), in a memorable walkout to Britney Spears ‘Oops, I did it again’ to avid cheers from the crowd. Great to see Georgia really coming into herself as a fighter, looking super relaxed and calm entering the ring. The bell sounded, with Georgia wasting no time and engaging clinch to throw multiple, devastating knees into the stomach of her opponent. The referee separated the two at around the 30 second mark of round one, however Georgia stuck to her game plan, engaging in the clinch once again to pour on those vicious knees! The stoppage was soon called by the referee, and Georgia emerged victorious in the first round against her opponent Amy Chan. Huge congratulations to Georgia, who has put in consistent training and hard work during her fight camp on a well-deserved win! We cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings for you!

Up next for the team was Fei Yen in a 65kg bout (3 x 2 minute rounds) against opponent Justin Berberick. Coming out strong and showing great aggression, Fei wasted no time in his first round, throwing a barrage of devastating combinations and using his reach to great effect! Pushing back Berberick with a powerful right cross, Fei dropped his opponent by following up with a vicious right kick to the body. Two wins for the team, both by stoppage AND in the first round! Amazing work by Fei who has clearly improved from his last fight, taking on the lessons learned to reach a new level. Congratulations!

Finishing up for the team at Roots was Kyle Leung on fight number 11 of the card, in a 67kg bout (3 x 2 minute rounds) against opponent Ryan Shepherd. Consistently returning kicks with perfect timing, Kyle continued to give back as good as he got, landing well-timed combinations against a strong opponent. With this fight going the full three rounds, Kyle came just short in the decision. Despite the loss, nothing but respect for Kyle for getting through some hard rounds and giving back. Great to see Kyle continuing to challenge himself as a martial artist, and he is sure to gain from the experience! Well done Kyle!

We would like to extend a special thank you to Coach Laos Toohey, Albert Xavier and David Lescai for cornering the team and putting in the effort to help out our fighters at Roots. We always say it, but we are lucky to have the community that we do, and could not be more grateful for your support. Thank you to all our members who came down to support the fight team!

Not content with just the local scene, the Absolute MMA Muay Thai team had two fighters from Absolute MMA Thailand also go to war in the ring! German fighter Phillip Engeroff was first up for the team in a 74kg rematch (Kard Chuek/Rope Wrapping style) against opponent Chanajon PK Saenchai on Thai Fight. Engeroff put up a solid fight until the second round, getting caught by his opponents right hand after attempting to counter by catching a right kick. Despite sustaining a loss, we would like to congratulate Phillip on getting in there, nothing but respect for taking the rematch and plenty to take into your next bout. Looking forward to seeing you come back stronger for the experience! You can view highlights from Phillip’s bout here.

We’re happy to report that our Norwegian Muay Thai Fighter Nissanth Karunanithy took away a win at Bangla Stadium in his second professional fight via fourth round KO! After a closely fought match, Nissanth came to life in the 4th round after being cut, finishing his opponent with elbows. Having taken this fight on just three days notice, stepping in for his teammate, this was a great display of heart for Nissanth and we’d like to congratulate him on a well-deserved win! Well done Nissanth!

In Siberia, Russia, the newest member of our professional team Jake “The Honey Bear” Heun was set to fight in a bout on RIZIN against opponent Vitaly Shemetov. Up against a strong opponent in Shemetov, who has been undefeated since 2010, Jake showed great heart and fought without a corner. Despite his loss via submission, we’d like to commend Jake on his dedication to the fight game, all the work he put in his fight camp with Coach Laos Toohey and Joe Boobyer, how far he travelled and for putting in all on the line on the mat! Can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds for Jake and we’re proud to have him on board with us.

Congratulations to all of our Boxing team who competed on Sunday! All of you performed really well, and showed good technical improvements. It was a busy day with six of our team leaving it all in the ring, shout out to Aneira, who fought twice and displayed great skill. We look forward to seeing you all move into the amateur level next! Well done!

FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (22/02/2019 – 24/02/2019)

It was a big day on Saturday last weekend (23/02/2019) for our Absolute MMA grappling team with both Grapplefest 4 in Liverpool, England and the UAEJJF National Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Sydney, Australia.

Internationally at Grapplefest we had a team of three competing with Craig Jones on as the main event, Lachlan Giles on the co-main and Izaak Michell (visiting from Arruda BJJ) on the main card. Izaak was first up against opponent Nathan Dunne (Next Gen) in an U70kg bout, looking super cool, calm and collected on the mat. Izaak avoided all submission attempts, and after displaying good top pressure and positional control, secured a win via heel-hook! Congratulations Izaak!

The co-main event saw Coach Lachlan Giles up against Braulo Estima black belt Bradley Hill in an U80kg bout. Lachlan found himself in trouble initially with Hill landing a rolling take down, but recovered, stringing together a series of attacks which resulted in another win via submission with an unorthodox inside heel-hook just ahead of the five minute mark. Job well done Lachlan!

In an exciting match up against 2 x IBJJF Gi World Champion Gabriel Arges, Craig Jones‘ U90kg bout rolled around on the main card and it was time to throw down! Craig kicked off the match with a slower than normal start for him, having just coached teammates Izaak and Lachlan in their bouts. Arges was first to pull guard, with Craig displaying his strong top game, passing the guard to mount. The clash continued with Craig throwing a number of leg attacks at Arges which were defended successfully, but once Craig took the back around the 10 minute mark, he wasted no time in sinking in a RNC to finish the match. Great result for Craig and the team with 3 wins via submission!

On the local scene in Sydney, the UAEJJF National Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship saw our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team go to work! Well done to everyone who competed and earned their medals on the day. Results from the team were as follows:

GIRLS GI / TEEN / 63KG / ORANGE/GREEN – Nacinta Tuuholoaki (Gold)

MALE GI / BLUE / ADULT / 85KG – Clay Lyne (Bronze)

MALE GI / BLUE / ADULT / 110KG – Luis Gabriel Contreras Olave (Gold)

UFC 234 WRAP UP | THANK YOU FOR VISITING!

When we found out that UFC 234 was going to be held in Melbourne at Rod Laver Arena on February 10th, 2019, we were more excited than anyone. The main event was intended to be a UFC Middleweight Championship bout between current champion and fellow Australian Robert Whittaker and The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen middleweight winner Kelvin Gastelum, however, Rob was forced to pull out of his bout the day prior due to a hernia, and a twisted and collapsed bowel that forced him to undergo emergency surgery. On behalf of all of us at Absolute MMA we would like to wish Rob a speedy recovery and we look forward to supporting the Australian champion when he can return to the cage!

Given the cancellation of the intended main event, the three-round co-main event between New Zealand native Israel Adesanya (City Kickboxing) and former champion Anderson Silva was set to headline the promotion. During the weeks leading up to UFC 234 we were lucky enough to have many of the UFC fighters, media and staff visit us to train at our facilities.

The City Kickboxing crew came down to train in full force, with Israel Adesanya, Kai Kara-France and Shane Young along with their Coach Eugene Bareman in the house on multiple occasions. It was amazing having the team train with us during the fight week, and you are all always welcome to come down again when visiting from New Zealand! Congratulations to all of you on your wins – an incredible 3 for 3 at UFC 234 for the crew! These results are a testament to how hard you and your crew work and it was great seeing you in action in the octagon. Check out “UFC 234 Embedded: Vlog series – Episode 5” which was partially filmed at our Melbourne CBD location here.

Popular UFC Featherweight Teruto Ishihara was another UFC athlete we were happy to welcome to our CBD facility during the week leading up to UFC 234. It was a pleasure to watch Teruto and his team go through the finishing touches for his fight. Although you did not get the result you were looking for on the day, we were cheering for you the whole way and we look forward to having your positive energy back in the gym next time you’re in Melbourne.

Wednesday 6th of February was an exciting day for the staff of Absolute MMA Collingwood! The gym filled with media staff, camera crews and reporters ready to take in the action of the UFC 234 media day. First up to workout was Jimmy Crute who wowed the cameras with his dynamic striking and powerful take downs. Jimmy looked as strong as ever when moving around our cage in Collingwood, and his TKO victory at UFC 234 showed just how at home he has become on the big stage.

Robert Whittaker was next to enter the Collingwood cage and impress the reporters with his slick footwork and fast hands. After showcasing his striking prowess he changed gears and rolled with Absolute’s own Craig Jones in a demonstration-type roll, in which staff of the gym were all too happy to see the Champ throw Craig on his head. The grappling was friendly and crowd-pleasing, as were Robert’s answers during the media scrum. We’re looking forward to having both Jimmy and Robert back in the gym next time the UFC are in town.

It was an exciting week for the team at Absolute MMA and we appreciate the attention and efforts of all UFC fighters, coaches and staff who took the time to come in and train with or visit us at Absolute MMA – including Dana White himself who dropped in and said hello at our Melbourne CBD location. We look forward to watching the continued success of all the fighters who call Absolute home while they’re in Melbourne, and cannot wait to see you all back in the gym next!

PATH TO HEX 8 RESULTS (16/02/2019)

It was one of the biggest ever cards for Absolute MMA on Saturday (February 16th, 2019) at Path to Hex 8 at the Chelsea Heights Hotel. A highly anticipated event for the gym with our very own Finnian Kinsella headlining the show on the main event for the Flyweight Championship! It definitely wasn’t just Finn though, we had a massive 8 other fighters set to put it all on the line; Adi Canimovic, Cristian Mejia, Jake Savic, Joshua Ber, Lisa Kyriacou, Rebecca Cerra, Sovann Q Ben and Tyrell Woollcott!

First up for the team was Joshua Ber in a lightweight bout against opponent Jack Wilshaw. Josh valiantly tried to hold his opponent in a triangle, but his opponent slipped out, Josh followed up with an arm bar but sustained a loss with his opponent escaping the submission and moving to ground and pound. In our next lightweight match up, Jake Savic faced off against opponent Jack Pelligana! Jake smashed it, dominating an opponent with a significant reach advantage to secure take downs every round and stay on top. A strong display of wrestling skills from Jake! Congratulation to Jake on a well deserved win via unanimous decision!

In the third lightweight bout for the team, Tyrell Woollcott stepped up against opponent Harry Webb. Tyrell unfortunately didn’t get the result he was looking for with a loss via TKO, however lots to take on board for his next bout!

Sovann Benoit up next for the team in a middleweight match against opponent Harley Bishop, coming out strong with a dominant performance in the first two rounds! Sovann got caught in a RNC at the end of the third round, sustaining a loss via submission. Lots to take away from the experience and to work on for next time!

In our fourth and final lightweight bout on the card, Cristian Mejia came out really strong against undefeated opponent in his 4th fight Mitchell Carter, showing a great striking game with sharp kicks. Unfortunately Christian conceded a take down late in the 3rd round which probably cost him the fight. Looking forward to seeing Christian back again and stronger for the experience!

Lisa “Savage” Kyriacou stepped up to the challenge of fighting Alish Smith (Spartan MMA), who has competed at the 2017 and 2018 World Championships, the 2018 Oceania Championships and the Asian Championships. This 60kg catch weight saw a weight advantage to Lisa with the experience advantage going to Alish. This was a tough fight for Lisa, with the bout going the full 3 rounds against a skilled opponent, however she came through with a win via split decision! Lisa always gives 100% heart and dedication in her training and we’re over the moon for her! Congratulations savage!

Rebecca “The Punisher” Cerra took on a strong opponent in Amber Thompson (Evolve MMA) who has represented Australia at the 2018 World Championships and 2018 Oceania Championships. Bec did a great job, getting in some solid shots and displaying her varied skill set, however just couldn’t get past Amber’s kicks and striking. Despite sustaining a loss via decision, nothing but respect for Bec, getting through some hard rounds and giving back against a technically strong opponent. Great to see Bec challenging herself as a martial artist by taking on an experienced opponent and she is sure to grow for the experience!

Stepping up in bout number eight for the Absolute MMA team, Adi Canimovic faced another undefeated opponent Bradley Shackleton in a light heavyweight clash which saw him give up a significant size advantage. Great work from Adi who kept the pressure on, securing take downs every round to take the win via decision! It’s been great seeing Adi put the hard yards in training in the lead up to his bout, we look forward to seeing what the rest of 2019 has for you!

Main event rolled around and Finnian Kinsella stepped into the octagon for his bout against opponent Troy Fumo for the Featherweight Title! A bit of a rocky start in the first round against a strong opponent, Finn picked it up in the second round and displayed his strong boxing skills. A close match ensued, with Finn eventually losing on points in a decision loss due to his opponents strong ground game. Hard day in the office, but great work by Finn who left it all in the cage, we’re looking forward to seeing you come back stronger for the experience and for what the rest of the year holds for you!

It was amazing seeing how many Absolute MMA supporters were in the venue, thank you all for coming down and showing support! We are so proud to be a part of this community and for our team all rallied around the fighters competing on the day. Thank you all once again, we’ll see you at the next one!
