WEEKEND FIGHT/COMPETITION RESULTS (24/11/2018-25/11/2018)

Great to see the Absolute MMA fight and competition teams finishing up November 2018 with a bang! Saturday saw our Muay Thai team head to Powerplay 39 and our Mixed Martial Arts team fly up to the Gold Coast for Eternal MMA 39. On Sunday we kept up our momentum, with six of Coach Pradeep Singh’s boxers heading to the VAMMA Interclub Training Day in St Albans and Susy Ferri from the BJJ competition team competing in NSW at the 2018 NSWBJJF Summer Cup. We’d also like to congratulate all our students who competed at the Dominance Sub Only No Gi Round Robin on Saturday!

Smokin’ Joe Coverdale (UFT Playgrounds/Absolute MMA) was up first from the team on Powerplay 39 against opponent James Hackett in a 3×3 round, 62kg match up. Looking relaxed and confident in the ring, Joe set the tone for the team, taking away a win via split decision. Congratulations on a great finish to the year Joe! We’ll see you back in the ring in 2019.

Albert “Timorese Assassin” Xavier was next up for the team, in a rematch against Quan Trinh, having previously faced off against him on Warriors Way and lost. After three rounds of back and forth, the judges awarded Alby the win in a unanimous decision. Great to see Alby super composed in his bout, throwing some slick combinations and showing great sportsmanship in the ring! Congratulations on a well deserved win!

Joe Boobyer stepped up to join the Powerplay 39 card for the semi-main event on just ONE DAY’S notice against opponent Chris Bradford (105+ kgs). What followed was five rounds of absolute war, in an bout that was truly legendary. Joe got knocked down multiple times, but got back up every single time, consistently giving back and throwing combinations! Despite losing on points, the crowd and the team were won over by Joe, who showed an immense amount of heart, lasting throughout all five rounds despite not having prepared for this fight at all. In the words of the commentator on the night, “reckon that was the best fight I’ve ever called”, and we couldn’t agree more! This was a truly inspiring performance and we couldn’t be prouder of Joe!

On the same night, but up on the Gold Coast, four of our Mixed Martial Arts team prepared to step into the Eternal MMA 39 octagon! Adi Canimovic was first up for the team, setting the tone for the team against opponent Christian Lapham. Looking cool, calm and collected, Adi secured a win via a first round TKO at 0:28! Congratulations on your win Adi!

Ben Higgins was up next against opponent Rafael Vilches, looking super comfortable and experienced in the cage! Ben  showed off his diverse skill set, securing a win via split decision. Great performance Ben! We can’t wait to see you in the cage once again.

In bout number three for Absolute MMA and finishing up for the team on the amateur card, Tyrell Woollcott faced off against opponent Jayden Binnie. After a tough fight camp and working with injuries, Tyrell sustained a loss in the third round via submission at the 2:08 mark. Lots to take away from the experience and to work on for next time!

On the co-main event of the night on the professional section of the card, Coach Sam Hibberd finished up for the team against opponent Michael Tobin. Sammy began well, starting aggressively and landing an overhand right before it went to the ground. Sam scrambled on top, but got stuck in a triangle choke. Showing a lot of heart, Sam tried to slam his way out of it about 5 or 6 times, but eventually tapped. Sam will be back stronger for the experience, and we’re looking forward to what 2019 brings for him!

Sunday rolled around, and it was time for the VAMMA Interclub Training Day in St Albans. Up first for the team, Linnea Victoria emerged victorious from her match, landing some good hits against a strong opponent! Congratulations on a well deserved win Linnea!

The boys finished up for the team, with Ben, Pin and Avinash showing great improvement from their first inter club bouts. Congratulations to Franky and Louis on two great first performances in their inter club debuts! It’s been great seeing you all train so hard to prepare, keep up the hard work.

In the Female Novice Adult 61kg(64kg) Gi (White Belt) of the 2018 NSWBJJF Summer Cup, Susy Ferri took away a double gold! Congratulations Susy! It’s been great seeing you put the hard work in on the mats and we can’t wait to see what you achieve in 2019.

MEET THE TEAM: MARYANNE MULLAHY

Coach Maryanne Mullahy aka “She Hulk” is a three-time World Champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a two-time World Championship Silver Medallist and before receiving her Black Belt she was currently ranked as the #1 Brown Belt female in the world for no-gi jiu-jitsu. She is also currently ranked as the number one Photoshop master at Absolute MMA and if you’ve ever made an awkward face in a photograph, even just once…no one can save you now. As strong as she is kind, we’re lucky to have her guiding our beginners through their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey at Melbourne CBD. Read on to find out about Maryanne!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Double gold at the 2013 No-Gi World Championships as a brown belt.

What made you start Martial Arts?

I was 16 at the time and some people came and did a self defense workshop at my high school. I really enjoyed it. The following week my friend dragged me to the local jiu jitsu club, and after my first class I was obsessed. Pretty much lived at the gym from that day forward, haha.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I moved to Melbourne for university and I trained at a few different clubs when I first arrived. One day Thiago invited me to come visit Absolute CBD for a training session (as I’d trained with him in the past when he had instructed at other gyms). When I walked though the door I knew Absolute was where I wanted to be.

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favorite memory from when you were younger?

I remember putting my older brothers into jiu jitsu holds when they annoyed me (haha).

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Retired on an island after a massive lottery win surrounded by a pack of puppies… a girl can dream, right?

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Cheeeessseeecakkkkeeeee.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

I actually work in financial services full time, coaching martial arts is a part time gig for me.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Ride my motorbike and I really enjoy drawing when I have the time.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

A unicorn! Why? It’s a horse with a sword on it’s head… need I say anymore? *stabby stabby*

What is your favorite travel destination? Why?

Europe. Cause I have a lot of friends and relatives over there. Always good to go visit them.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m originally from Geelong, but moved to Melbourne to study a science degree. Did the degree, but don’t work in a science field. I know… makes perfect sense.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

Con Air and Godzilla (the Matthew Broderick one).

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect and grade right away. Martial arts is a journey, not a sprint! Be sure to enjoy that journey.

During an Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Richard Lattemagi, as he’s my Estonian brother from another mother. Emilie Yap, cause she’s my sista from another mister. And Paul Bai…. cause every Zombie apocalypse team needs cannon fodder. Xoxox

“Maryanne is the P4P nicest person in the gym, and arguably, the world. She’s always been someone who will go out of her way to help me and others. She’s truly one of a kind, already an absolute legend in Australian grappling, someone I’m lucky to have learned off of and someone I feel privileged to call a friend. She’s also hands down one of the strongest humans in the gym, and that’s saying a lot when you look at who trains at Absolute.”- Amit Narayan

“Super Coach.” – Nathan Heddle

“Without her welcoming myself and my friend Mordor to Australia…I love her, she’s forever my best friend in Australia, my sister from another mister, and I can’t be more thankful to her for being the lovely open person that she is.” – Richard Lattemagi

“Being friends with Maryanne is like winning the friend lottery in life! Lucky to have her in my life, prouder to call her my sister. You won’t find anyone more supportive, encouraging and genuine. As one of the Introduction class coaches, Maryanne is one of the first teachers our new students have, and we couldn’t ask for a better person to introduce the gym. As Lady Gaga once said, “Talented. Brilliant. Incredible. Amazing. Showstopping. Spectacular.”…and that’s how Maryanne feels about me. Haha! She makes a phenomenal roast which is on par with her roasting skills so it’s best not to cross her or she’ll Photoshop your head onto…something. Nothing but love and respect for this amazing woman!” – Emilie Yap

“I’m convinced time machines have already been invented. How else could Maryanne have been the inspiration
for the creation of She Hulk in 1980?” – Sarah Wahjudi

“Maryanne’s a world class buttkicker, a skilled coach and a dear friend. She’s taught me to respect leglocks and is my dog’s favorite human. She once had her brother give my family $500 worth of luxury cheeses, saving us from starvation. Growing up, She Hulk had a poster of Maryanne on her wall. True story. Don’t miss out. Come train with her at Absolute today.”-
Han Wahjudi

“An amazonian with a heart of gold who also makes a mean Sunday roast. She once took in a couple of Estonian street kids out of a crack house and let them live with her. She once chased me across a room because I took her unlocked phone with Facebook open. It was the only time in my life where I experienced pure fear that my life would truly end, as I barricaded myself in a room as she was breaking down the door demanding that I give her phone back. She’s awesome.”- Kevin Lau

“Kind and strong, gentle lady as a person, the best Coach in the world! Don’t miss out her class ! It can be changed your life.” – Rhylie Kim

5 BENEFITS OF TRAINING BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu isn’t just a sport, it is a way of life. This martial art will not only give you some new skills but has the capability to transform your life for the better. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a.k.a “the gentle art” can be for everyone, and below are some of the benefits you will experience after even just a few months of training.

1. Get fit and strong
One of the most immediate things people start to notice after they begin their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey is the improvement in their overall physical condition. People become stronger, leaner, and have increased cardiovascular health after even just a short time training, and the best part is that this all happens by association of just turning up to class and having fun!

2. Stress relief
Turning up to class is an awesome way to let go of the stresses of life and to feel calmer and more balanced. Even when you are walking into the gym feeling stressed, your worries are pretty quickly forgotten once you begin to grapple with others. Jiu jitsu allows you to let off some steam, and focusing on rolling is a good way to give yourself time away from overthinking everyday stresses.

3. Making friends
Jiu jitsu is a great way to surround yourself with people of all ages and backgrounds, in an environment that is all about promoting positive teamwork and learning. At jiu jitsu you are surrounded by people with similar goals, levels of discipline and motivation. We all have different and busy lives, but one thing we share through jiu jitsu is that we all love learning, training hard, and having fun. Nothing creates bonds like training together, because a great part of martial arts is both trusting and looking out for your partners to work safely together.

4. Self defence
Jiu jitsu will give you the skills to learn how to manage conflict, anticipate an attack and in some circumstances control an aggressor without inflicting any serious harm to them. Jiu jitsu will teach you how to get someone to the ground, manage distance and understand how to move on the ground and use someone else’s aggression or energy against them. Most importantly, it gives you confidence that you can avoid conflict and feel less threatened in potentially dangerous situations.

5. Self development
Last but not least, jiu jitsu is an amazing opportunity for self development and improvement. You will find that your problem solving skills are improved by training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on a regular basis. Many of our students also note that they can remain calm in tough or high pressure situations after practicing jiu-jitsu for a couple of months. In jiu jitsu every day on the mats we face adversity, and when sparring we need to remain calm to ensure we can think instead of panic to get through tough times.

Life happened, and I was running out of money, so I moved back home to New Zealand for a year to be with family and saved up to travel all over again. “Jackie is one of the most determined ladies I know both in and outside of the gym. Having started at Absolute MMA together, I’ve seen her push herself out of her comfort zone and work hard to progress and improve her technique. Within the space of a year she has nailed the high kick, by asking for advice on her technique, practicing before and after class and pushing herself each week to do better than the last. Not only is she one tough cookie but underneath her tough exterior is the most sweetest, loyal and loving souls you’ll ever meet.”- Priya Johal

“Don’t let this lady’s resting stone face scare you off – come up to level 10 at 5.30pm and you’ll see J-Tan busting moves and cracking jokes in between the combos. One of my faves – always making training fun and putting up with whatever my ‘training mood’ might be for the day… what more to ask for! Lots of love J-Tan, you da best xx”- Linnea Waestberg

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?
Maryanne Mullahy, my sister from another mister, super strong and all around great human being. Oliver Smith to lead and calm down all the beginners (or survivors, whatever you want to call them) the team would come across and Richard Lattemagi because I feel like he could convince the zombies to not eat us through some demon sales magic.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: CARMEN HE

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! This member spotlight turns to Carmen, one of our super strikers who is always looking to improve, whether that be through her Muay Thai, or in her one-on-one training with Coach Daniel Howard. She’s an amazing cook, makes delicious pierogies (check out her business here: www.grandmasgirl.com.au) and has assisted fight team members such as Albert Xavier with nutrition and meal prep. Read on to find out more about Carmen!

Occupation: Financial Controller / Business Owner
Martial Arts/Sports: Muay Thai

How did you get into the sport?

Well, it all started off in Richmond when I lived across the street from Tao’s old gym. Hearing people train everyday through my bedroom window made me curious. I decided to go for a trial one Saturday morning and the rest was history!

What are your immediate training goals?

Be consistent and be better than I was yesterday.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Be fit – both physically and mentally.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

Great community, positive people, supportive network.

What is your favourite move?

Spinning elbow! Definitely looks better when other people do it though!

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Humble – Kendrick Lamar

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Yoga, watching food shows/documentaries and hitting up markets.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

Fun fact: I used to be over 200lbs in grade 8! I grew up with my grandma in China till I was 6 years old and I was always overfed. That didn’t stop when I moved to Canada and it went slightly out of control (ha). In grade 9 I went on a serious diet and lost 60lbs in one year and just kept working out and eating better to slowly shed the weight. I ended up in Melbourne after quitting my corporate job and backpacking solo for a year. Ran out of money and ended up in corporate again but in Melbourne! Figured I might as well make some money and do some traveling on this side of the world! And besides what’s there to not love about beaches and hot weather all year long… (and then I realized I’d moved to Melbourne.. ha!)

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

People who are driven and would do anything and everything to achieve their goals. I find it extremely difficult to always stay focused so I really admire people who can do it and kick some serious goals.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

San Telmo for a big hearty treat – anything and everything is amazing here.
Moroccan Soup Bar for the chickpea bake.
Loving Hut for a good catch-up spot with tasty vegan options – definitely get the laksa.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Be patient and have fun!

“She is one fierce chick! What can I say…..when she walks into the room, you know she is a pro with those striking kicks and those meal preps. When we partner up together she makes me want to push myself to the limits with a mean strike back. She encourages you to do your best and always supporting on the side lines where ever she may be. I am glad to have her on my side whether it may be us joking around or focusing on our techniques while laughing at each other. Beast!” – Jackie Tan

“Yeah, she’s alright.”- Dan Howard, Coach

“Carmen is fun to be around with as a student she always will learn to do a new thing she always ask you if something she want to learn and she learn fast always be on time when the classes start.” – Laos Toohey, Coach

“Carmen! This gorgeous lady actually helped me learn some of the basics in Muay Thai when I first joined. She was always patient when teaching us newbies and really supportive. If you ever need a hand in nailing the power behind your kicks – give her a yell. Just keep that guard up. Oh and when she’s not ripping it up in the gym this girl makes delicious pierogis for her catering business! This woman is unstoppable!”- Priya Johal

“Carmen is a beautiful, genuine soul and a woman of the world. No challenge is too great for her, making her an awesome training buddy and friend.”- Alyra Bartasek

“Not just another cool chick, this multi-talent can do much more than kick. Cooking mean meals is also her game, and part of her Absolute fame. A beautiful kind soul, she always makes your heart feel whole!”- Linnea Waestberg
