Favorite workout?

I enjoy my long runs from Collingwood to St Kilda and then I like to try and survive the ADCC sessions.

Frank Reynolds – Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Anybody that has their life together… you can learn something from everyone.

Never stop learning. You are a lot fatter then you think you are.

Dan Herb and Tao – they would have a shelter built real quick and it would be good. Imantha – He knows why, and I would probably be able to out run him if needed to.

“Sam is a wrecking machine. He has experience from training around the world and his snap down is sick.”- Sean Le Gourierrec

“Will always identify and reflect on the positives to take from a fight and areas to work on immediately after the fight.”- Josh Grove

“Sam is a great martial artist and passionate, energetic coach. On top of that he’s a stand-up bloke. I still owe him one from that time in Thailand I woke him up at 5:30am with van keys and a map to the airport!”- Oliver Smith

“Sam is one of our most valuable assets. A brilliant coach for the MMA team, and a formidable pro fighter. We are blessed to have an athlete like him.” – Jai Tao

“I’ve trained with Sam for more than over 10 years and it has been great to see Sam develop as both an fighter and a coach. Sam was very important in starting Absolute and was a key part of our early growth. Sam’s return has bought more than just Staph and ringworm to the club, he is a great addition to our team both on and off the mats. While Sam may lack in personal hygiene, he has still developed a great following at the club which is a testament to his coaching, personality and how he fights. It has been great to see Sam get the best out of his athletic ability and rise to upper levels over local MMA and it will be great to see him continue to progress over the coming years. Thanks for your contribution Sam.”- Simon Carson

“Sam is not only a very skilled fighter, but also an excellent MMA coach. I find his style of teaching to be extremely helpful and meaningful in every single class. He puts a great amount of effort into helping each and every one of his students reach their full potential and goals. His passion for MMA definitely reflects both when fighting and teaching.”- Lisa Kyriacou

“Sam is an expert coach, he goes out of his way to explain things in detail and will help you understand why you are performing this certain technique, the cues and will help identify your form, even if you’re like Lisa Kyriacou and have no idea what the hell is going on. If you’re (un)fortunate enough to be in the cage with him during sparring, get ready for a long and exhausting round.”- Imantha Alahakoon

WEEKEND RESULTS (26/10/2018-28/10/2018)

Big weekend for our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition team with the IBJJF Pan Pacific 2018 running from Friday through to Sunday! It was great to see so many of our staff and members from all three of our gyms competing on the day, a huge thank you to all the friends and family who came down to support the Absolute MMA team! To everyone who competed, congratulations on continuing to challenge yourself and moving forward in your martial arts journey. We could not be prouder of all of you for working so hard, congratulations once again to all who competed and received medals!

Overall as a team we received second place once again in Gi, and third place in No Gi. Thank you to our whole team and everyone who trains BJJ at the club, this is a result of our whole team working together, irrespective of whether you competed or not. We’re lucky to have such a tight knit team that is super supportive of each other and we are very proud of the positive attitude you all take to the mats! Well done everyone!

On Saturday (27/10/2018), three members of our Mixed Martial Arts team, Coach Kevin Jousset, Ridz Wan and Josh Ber went to Adelaide to fight at Eternal MMA 38.

Ridz secured a win via unanimous decision in a tough three round war against opponent Jack Hayes. This was a close match, but a well deserved win, congratulations to Ridz on the result of all his hard work! Can’t wait to see you back in the cage again soon!

Coach Kevin Jousset pulled off yet another first round win via KO against opponent Marc Luty via slam at the 2.17 minute mark! This marks the THIRD first round KO Kevin has made for his last three fights. What a beast! If you are interested in learning from Kevin, be sure to attend his Takedowns for Gi BJJ classes at our Melbourne CBD location every Friday at 1pm.

Hard day in the office for Joshua Ber, who was up against opponent Ryan Cooper. Josh looked great in the first round, putting up a good display of his striking and shooting skills. Unfortunately, he got clipped in the second round, with the ref stepping in to stop the fight. Lots to take away from the fight and Josh will be back stronger for the experience! Good on you for getting in there Josh.

Up in New South Wales at the Coffs Harbour Invitational 3, Coach Mikael Yahaya of Absolute MMA St Kilda was ready to throw down! Mikael secured two wins via heel hook in the four man (sub only) tournament to take away the 65 kg championship belt. Congratulations Mikael!

Continuing the Absolute MMA St Kilda Coach trend for the weekend of wins via heelhooks, Coach Lachlan Giles represented the gym internationally in a super fight in China at Wu Lin Fang, Zhengzhou. Matched up against opponent Rida Haisam, Lachlan stepped into the match 20 kg lighter than his opponent. This match was the best of three five minute rounds (submission only), with Lachlan securing his win with heel hooks in rounds 1 and 2. What a weapon! Proud to have you on the team Lachlan, safe travels and we look forward to having you back in the gym soon.

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

My greatest achievement in this art is getting to meet all the lovely people from around the world that share a love for jiu-jitsu as I do.

What made you start Martial Arts?

Fitness and self defence, as well as a learning experience.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I practiced jiu-jitsu all throughout university and I attempted to make a full time thing of it during my gap year after I graduated. I got the teaching role with Absolute MMA 6-7 months into that year. Here I am now!

What is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

Seeing my sister for the very first time.

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Anyone that loves learning and stepping outside of their comfort zone is someone I’ll be inspired by. Someone that’s always changing and adapting. I love seeing that.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pizza. There’s always room for one more slice.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

I’d like to say if I didn’t do martial arts that I would have taken a risk to try and make a music career. But who knows?

Mantra/Quote to live by?

“Always down to throwdown”.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

A monkey. If you met me you’d understand.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I only learnt how to ride a skateboard at the age of 25. Thanks Sean Le Gourrierec!

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I was born in Malaysia. I lived there till I was 12 and my parents sent me to boarding school here. Now here I am!

Can you think of a common inspirational quote that you completely disagree with and why?

Drillers make killers. No comment. The world ain’t ready.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

Music definitely. I love the art of music. There is always so much to do and learn. Like sparring, every song played is always different. Things can never be replicated exactly. Nor should they be.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Most people. I’m pretty short.

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

I’m really good at making fun of Tom Everett.

Have you done other sports besides martial arts?

Rugby union. My first love. I was always the scrappy runt getting into fights. Not much has changed.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Hello Sam Cafe in South Yarra. Any burger is delicious!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Don’t be so harsh on yourself. Things will click eventually. We get better with light bulb moments. Not a steady gradient.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

I believe I can run the furthest and the quickest. I think I’ll be fine on my own ?

“Mikael would probably be in the top three male light-featherweight brown belts from Malaysia that are living and competing in Australia.” – Dr Lachlan Giles

“I first met Mikael 3 years ago when he came into our old South Yarra location looking to train. Sadly Mikael was homeless, but he was a good kid so we decided to let him train anyway. He actually doesn’t even know how old he is. Some say he’s 15 others think he’s 37. He trains relentlessly, sometimes even 5 sessions in a single week. Obviously with this hard training schedule comes great results and we’ve seen him smash his way into the rankings, coming in as the 37th ranked light featherweight, masters 3, half Indian, half Malaysian jiu jitsu fighter he is today.” – Craig Jones

“Mikael is not only a dedicated kids coach he’s also a kid himself. Pound for pound the hairiest kid on earth.” – Tom Everett

MEET THE TEAM: RICHARD LATTEMAGI

Coach and Center Manager Richard “Lättemägic” Lättemägi is most likely the first familiar face many of you saw when you entered the doors of Melbourne CBD. Devoted to the gym and the people in it, he’s got endless energy to help out our members and crush people on the mats with his freaky rubber-esque boa constrictor skills. When he’s not running the gym from desk, he’s guiding people in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Absolute MMA Collingwood on Fridays at 12.30pm. Be sure to check out his classes, and read on to find out more about our favourite Estonian!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Surviving Big Nog’s crushing side control.

What made you start Martial Arts?

Watching UFC and going “This BJJ thing seems interesting!”. Plus I wanted to be kick ass. Now I just want to pull guard and heel hook people.

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

Started training BJJ at Absolute MMA before I started working here. I was actually in financial software before this!

Favourite workout/walkout song?

“Are You Man Enough” – The Four Tops.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Pretty decent at pulling guard.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A succulent reverse-seared steak with chimichurri prepared by James Walters.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

Travel around Victoria. Recently got into photography. Read. Browse /r/BJJ.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

I AM a monkey.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I can scratch the back of my head with my foot.

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I’m from Tallinn, Estonia. Most people think it’s a made-up country but I swear it exists. When people ask me to speak Estonian I just say “Jäääär!”.

Can you think of a common inspirational quote that you completely disagree with and why?

Lachlan Giles stole my answer to this one.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

People who can admit when they’re wrong. Still working on that one myself…

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

My face. And it’s more like “laugh” than “smile”. I am also able to triangle choke myself.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Recently went to Chin Chin for the first time and had the “Feed Me” option. Blown away. So delicious! EDIT: Gone there twice now. Moved up a weight class.

What movie have you seen over 5 times?

“The Bodyguard” with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston.

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

Plenty of great books I’ve read through the years but more recently “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to suck a bit less at communicating with people.

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

I wouldn’t give any advice. I’d just heel hook myself.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

James Walters as the chef. He’d be able to cook up a mad zombie-feast.
Joe Boobyer because he’s great at staying out of trouble.
Em Yap because…well. She’s Em.

“There are 3 things that motivate and describe Lättemägic. Coffee, bjj and sales…and only closers deserve coffee.” – Apryl Eppinger

“Richard has a shiny head.” – James Walters

“One of the best things about martial arts is the friendships you make, and through martial arts I was able to meet Richard. Richard is the family you choose. Funny, smart, caring, and a boss grappler… practically part of the furniture at the gym from the day he came to an open mat all those years ago. The gym is a better place with our Estonia brother from another mother there!”- Maryanne Mullahy

“If like me, you’ve been wondering what it would be like to roll with gumby on steroids, Lattemagi is your man.” – Maxwell Mews

“As charming as Richard is, he is 100 times stretchier (I have borne witness to him speaking on his phone with his foot to his ear) and passing his guard is hard. I love and hate him at the same time. Also he has one tight triangle.”- Tina Trinh

“My Estonian brother from another mother. A great guy who is an even greater competitive grappler. Happy to see how his life developed here in Australia through Absolute MMA. Always friendly and always willing to tell it like it is. His usual maccas order is a large big Mac meal with a sprite and Apple pie.”- Kevin Lau

“Richard has perfected the art of the 7/11 strong flat white and for that, we thank him. Everything else I came up with about the man was NSFW.”- Oliver Smith

“This one. Helps us keep the gym together and always makes me laugh with that crazy wide eyed grin he loves to pull! When he’s not developing his already formidable sale skills, he’s helping me save money with his endless list of life hacks. Here’s to many more shared coffees on desk, thanks for being my partner in crime at Melbourne CBD, and to taking over the martial arts world!” – Emilie Yap

“Richard is one of the friendliest people in the gym, staff or member. He is always happy, full of energy, and down to have a laugh. He has great jiu jitsu, when rolling with him, watch out for his damn octopus legs! 11/10 great guy”- Tim Baker

“This Russian is a pretty nice guy.He could sell sand in the desert and ice in Antarctica. He is a flexible bastard in Jiu-Jitsu who dreams he will heel hook me but it will never happen and he knows that.”- Thiago Stefanutti

WEEKEND RESULTS (06/10/2018 – 07/10/2018)

Our Boxing team got things going this weekend at the VAMAA Inter-club at Ultimate Muay Thai in St Albans with four members of the team participating. Linnea led things for the team on fight 2 of the card, going up against a technical opponent. After two rounds, the match ended in a draw. Congratulations to Linnea on her debut in the ring! Great seeing you get in there.

Ben, Avinash and Pin also all had bouts on the day and put on a good display of skill. We’re proud of the team for being great representatives for the gym and conducting themselves calmly with composure in the ring! Well done to you all.

Meanwhile on the west coast coaches Livia, Lachlan Giles and Connor Evans took to the mats at the Australian Wrestling Nationals in Western Australia. Liv took out the gold medal respectively in her weight division, showing her prowess and dominating by technical superiority. We are proud to report that in her exhibition matches she also walked away from both matches with wins!

Lachlan Giles battled his way onto the podium, in a series of epic matches to take the Bronze medal in his division. Wrestling Coach Connor Evans also stormed into his division, taking home yet another National Championship and adding to his already sterling record. You can check out some highlights from the day on Connor’s Facebook page here:

Sunday saw our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team head to compete at Grappling Industries. There was a great representation from all three of our gyms participating on the day and we would like to thank everyone who came down to support the team! As always, we are proud of everyone who competed and challenged themselves on the day! Congratulations to you all on your medals and the culmination of all your hard work.

We’d like to highlight a couple of stand out performances from the day, like Vanessa Natoli who took to the mats after a 2 month break with a rib injury (having been back on the mats less than a month) to take on some fierce ladies in her division. Showing her determination to stand and work her top and take down game, saw Vanessa take the silver in her division in the gi with fellow Absolute teammate Sophia taking the gold. Sophia also then went on to dominate in the no-gi division bagging yet another Gold.

Natalie Hobbs also fought her way through 4 matches on the day, scoring over 10 points in 3 of them! Well done to Natalie who takes away an end result of 2-2. Liv Zago also took on some tough competition in the gi and no-gi, walking away with Gold in no-gi and gi division with Suzy Ferri taking the Silver. It was great to also see Juliette Brillet taking home a silver medal in the her gi division, displaying great skill in some amazing battles, coming back from being down on points and submitting her opponents. Then in the no-gi she battled her way to take the Bronze. Congratulations ladies and thanks for representing us on the mats over the weekend!

It wasn’t just the ladies performing for the team, with Vince Phan from Absolute MMA Melbourne CBD taking out bronze in gi and gold in no-gi, in a double medal affair. Joseph Schwef of Absolute MMA St Kilda took out a full rainbow, with three medals on the day (competing in both gi and no-gi), taking home a gold, silver and bronze!

Last but not least from Grappling Industries were our amazing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prodigies! Veneta won 2 silvers in gi and Aaron won a silver and a gold in gi as well. Great job kids! It’s amazing to see your progression and we could not be prouder of you. Shout out to Coach Mikael Yahaya for always looking out for our prodigies, and for having two epic throw downs of his own. We’re sure there’s plenty of results we’ve missed, and we would love to hear about them. Please share your results with us on social media by tagging the gym, or hashtagging #iamabsolutemma on Instagram! Congratulations again to you all.

Overseas in the USA, Las Vegas, Coach Craig Jones was a force to be reckoned with at Quintet Grappling 3. In a team grappling format Craig (or Kreg as some would call him) was part of team Polaris. In the semi-finals Craig defeated 10th Planet standouts Richie Martinez and Adam Sachnoff by submission. In the finals Craig defeated Antoine Jaoude via submission but finally succumbed to Gordon Ryan representing team Alpha Male. All in all a great effort with 3 submissions in a very exciting format of grappling!

In Asia, our Absolute MMA Thailand Muay Thai team stepped up! First stepping into the ring was our guest from Canada, Alana DeLisle.. Alana got some great shots in, prioritizing her punches against an opponent who utilized higher scoring techniques in their bout, with the fight ending in a loss for Alana via points. A close, tough match for Alana- well done on getting in there!

Sebastian Johannsson from Sweden had his first fight with Absolute MMA Thailand, in a big win in round 2 via KO! This was a beautiful straight right hand from Sebastian, congratulations on your win! Helen Harper, our guest from England was up next against a young fighter from Krabi. Great stamina from Helen who went the distance, tiring out her opponent to win on points in a close match.

Alexander Welin, our fight team member from Sweden closed up for the team in an exciting back and forth fight. This was an absolute war and an absolute elbow fest! Both fighters sustained significant cuts after two rounds, with Welin changing up tactics to win via KO in the third round with his boxing skills. Heavy hands! We’ll be excited to see what comes next for Welin- congratulations!

Can you tell us about where you’re from and any interesting stories growing up? If you’re not originally from Melbourne, how’d you end up living in Melbourne, Australia?

I grew up in a tiny village of 6000 people in southern Sweden and am the youngest of three siblings. My family calls me ‘the little ghost’ as I often woke up in the middle of the night when I was little, and tip toed into my parents bedroom when I couldn’t sleep.

When I was 19, I had enough of the Swedish climate and travelled to Sydney where I lived for 6.5 years – then got bored and moved to Melbourne. Oh and also – my first overseas trip as a 10 month old was to Australia – where I took my first steps. It was meant to be!

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Oh…everyone – love how we’re all so different and have so much to share with one another – there is always something to learn from everyone you meet.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Urban Projuice in South Melbourne – and everything on the menu!

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Patience, patience, patience (I still say this to myself every day…).

“You think her guns are big? Her heart is bigger. <3 <3”- Carmen He

“Linnea is one of the sweetest, kindest souls I know…but as soon as she steps into the gym she’s an absolute monster! Giving her best to each session, perfecting her technique, learning from and sharing tips with her peers. Oh and make sure you keep those hands up, she’s not scared to teach you a lesson or two. ” – Priya Johal

“Linnea ‘Scandinavian Assassin’ is an asset to the Absolute Gym. She is always there with a smile and motivated. Her dedication and work ethic is second to none. You know when she is your training partner you are going to get a great workout, with no time to slack off.”- Karman Moodley

“What can I say about my Swed! Don’t get intimidated by those gorgeous eyes, it may look like she is looking at you from afar, but really you’re being rejected with her being too focused on her destination. Linnea is a feisty hunny, but also one strong women who is growing her strengths to be an amazing fighter one day. She focuses on her techniques the most but also remembers to stretch out all over the mat to get her hips moving, and flow those hits smoothly. Definitely one of my main partners in class who pushes herself to the limit but also makes sure to have a good little boogie in between.”- Jackie Tan

“She’s training hard, and improving her boxing consistently. Best of luck to her in the future to do well in boxing and achieve her goals!” – Coach Pradeep Singh Sihag

MEET THE TEAM: OLIVER SMITH

Coach Oliver “Oli” Smith started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2012, and currently holds a purple belt. He’s our resident big, friendly giant (although maybe not if you’re rolling with him) and helps keep Absolute MMA Collingwood in tip-top shape! He is active in the BJJ competition scene and has placed in almost every competition he has entered, including a silver at the UAEJJF International Open as a blue belt. Read on to find out about Oli!

What would you consider your greatest achievements in Martial Arts?

Silver at the UAEJJF Melb International Pro (Blue Belt).

What made you start Martial Arts?

My father practised karate when I was young, and I always wanted to go with him. Finally when I was about 11, he let me!

How did you first get involved with Absolute MMA? (What industry were you in prior to Martial Arts? What made you change?)

I broke my foot practising karate, and as soon as it healed I wanted to go back to back a non-striking form to give my foot a break. That’s when I found BJJ!

I managed a backpackers in Melbourne for a number of years. This really tested and improved my communication skills, which directly translated to being able to help explain things while helping out with the white belt classes. I pursued teaching because of the reward of seeing someone improve and grow in confidence. It also helps me better understand the details and intricacies of techniques.

Favourite workout/walkout song?

Wolf Like Me – TV On The Radio

Tell us about your life growing up, what is your favourite memory from when you were younger?

Had a great, very outdoorsy childhood with my father and 2 younger brothers and our friends. Lots of hiking, camping, rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, etc.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Now that I’m mostly recovered from a knee injury, I’m looking forward to competing as much as possible, and representing the team as much as I can!

Who is an inspiration to you, and why?

Josh Waitzkin – He’s the dude that the book & movie ‘Searching for Bobby Fischer’ was based on – about a young chess prodigy. After chess he went on to become a ‘push hands’ world champion (combative tai chi) and then later moved on to BJJ and received his black belt from Marcelo Garcia. He’s a fantastic thinker, and does a great job at breaking down his process for learning a new discipline in a book called ‘The Art of Learning’.

If you weren’t working in the Martial Arts industry, what would you be doing?

Eating pizza. Or be working as an osteopath. I was actually accepted into the course, but deferred to take training/teaching more seriously.

If you were going to be an animal, what would you be and why?

Maybe a chimpanzee, or an orangutan… imagine a monkey that could grapple!

What is your favourite travel destination? Why?

Thailand so far. I’ve had great experiences training and competing there, and I love that you can hire a scooter and be mobile straight away.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I once had a grappling match against Amir Aliakbari, former Iranian heavyweight Greco-Roman champion (who was stripped of his medal for doping) – it didn’t go well.

Besides martial arts, what else are you passionate about and why?

I have a weird obsession with bonsai plants at the moment.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

People who manage to study/work AND compete at a high level. Like Lachlan Giles! How the hell did he become a doctor of physiotherapy, train, compete and teach? All to an exceptionally high level?!

Do you have a “useless” talent that makes people smile every time you use it?

I can wiggle my nostrils. When i was young I thought I was the only one who could do it, but as I told more and more people, I realised it’s really not that hard 🙁

Have you ever worked a job not in the fitness/martial arts industry? What were the highlights and lessons you learned?

I managed a backpackers in Melbourne for around 5 years. I had a great time and I feel like I graduated my with my PHD in hand signals and guessing what people who speak English as a second language are trying to say. It really stepped up my communication skills, and also made me realise that it’s still possible to get an accurate sense of someone’s personality without speaking their same language. Even if you don’t share the same language, with a little bit of patience and curiosity it’s possible to communicate almost anything.

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

I love Don Dons on the corner of Swanston and Little Lonsdale. $6.90 for a chicken curry and it’s ready before you put your change back in your pocket – what’s not to like?!

Is there a book you’ve read that has influenced your outlook on life or the way you approach certain situations or people?

It’s a cliche, but reading ‘The Book of Five Rings’ by Miyamoto Musashi can feel like you’re getting ancient wisdom downloaded into your brain if you read it at the right time. Also ‘The Art of Learning’ by Josh Waitzkin is an amazing look at the obsessive life led by a young boy on his way to becoming a chess master and the lessons he learned.
Lastly, ‘The Border Trilogy’ by Cormack McCarthy. It’s beautifully written, but it’s a very sad story about a boy, his brother, their horses and their relationship with nature and life. (Just read it!)

If you could go back in time to your first martial art class, what would be the advice you give to your past self?

Chill Winston.

During a Absolute MMA staff retreat a zombie apocalypse breaks out. You get separated with 3 AMMA team members. Who would be part your dream team and why?

Sean Le Gourrierec because he’d bring the best supplies and most enthusiasm to the situation. Emilie Yap because when we do survive, someone’s going to have to organise the world… Aaaand I’d use Thiago Steffanutti’s massive head to block the door of our bunker while we escape out the back.

“Mr Oli ‘Fantastic’ Smith super cool and super chill. Will entangle you with skills, detailed knowledge and darn friendly smile.”- Apryl Eppinger

“I remember the first day I met Oli, it was before a jiu-jitsu class and I was like, wanna have a warm up roll? He then proceeded to throw me around like a rag doll.. And he hasn’t stopped since. Lucky he is my friend now.
You won’t get a more thoughtful and genuine person than Oli. He will do anything for you and has a heart of gold, and regardless of what he has going on, is always willing to put others first. He’s pretty lanky though, so there’s always that.” – James Walters

“Olli has a way of making you feel very special when you talk to him and very humble when you roll with him. His chokes are the real deal.”- Sean Le Gourrierec

“I guess he’s pretty good, I heard he was a white belt for bloody ages though.”- Matt D’Arcy

“I hope one day they invent a 4-meter long expert jiu-jitsu robot and have it attack Oliver. That will be the day Oliver realises how fucking annoying he is to roll with. Great friend though.”- Richard Lattemagi

“Oli is one of those genuinely friendly individuals who radiate positive vibes, and lift the spirits of whoever they are around. He also has the ability to literally lift you straight off the ground. He’s a great coach, explains technique clearly and is unbelievably patient with all his students. Thanks for getting all the things I can’t reach at the gym and looking out for the little people Oli, your heart is as large as you are tall!” – Emilie Yap

“Oliver is a gentle beast. A gentleman outside the mat and a monster inside of it. My face is frequently punched by him during our grappling sessions but I still like him anyway.” – Thiago Stefanutti
