MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: YVONNE CHOW

We have many amazing people with interesting stories that walk into all our gyms! The member spotlight turns to Yvonne Chow, one of our Mixed Martial Arts ladies and a savage southpaw with a heart of gold.

Occupation: HR Manager

Martial Arts/Sports: Mixed Martial Arts

How did you get into the sport?

Initially I got into the sport for fitness. I was always kind of intrigued with the idea of sparring someone but had always been too afraid to try it. I thought martial artists had to start training as kids and that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but that’s not the case at Absolute!

What are your immediate training goals?

I’d like to get fit, gain as many new skills and perfect existing skills.

What are your goals for the next five years?

Thiago jump-scares me every time I come in to train. In the next five years, I plan to develop the inner strength and alertness to sense when he’s around. One day I might even be able to return the jump-scare… but a girl can only dream.

Why do you love training at Absolute MMA?

I’ve been training at Absolute for like 4 years now and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Everyone is super friendly and just happy to help. My training partners all care about my progress and I am same to them as well.

What is your favourite move?

Single leg take down (it’s super ugly right now but I’m working on it!).

Favourite workout/walkout song?

X Gon Give It To Ya.

What do you like to do to relax besides training?

A little gin, a little tonic and a dash of grapefruit juice.

Who are the kind of people that you look up to and why?

Not many people, because I’m taller than most (dad joke, I know).

What’s your favourite place to eat in Melbourne and your #1 dish recommendation?

Ma Xiao Er (Carlton) – hot pot place with the most delicious broth!

“Don’t let her pretty made up face and big hair fool you, she will mess you up with her crazy strong hooks. Best training partner ever! (Minus messing up my arm right before my first fight).” – Nina Le, training partner

“Yvonne has the biggest heart in the gym. She gets scared everyday and she never has a heart attack. I’m helping her test her heart.” – Thiago Stefanutti

“Yvonne always trys hard and listens to instructions. When she gives, she gives 100%. Her style of fighting is do or die. To me as a coach, I always believe in her style…she’s a southpaw like me! Lefty Lady! I am glad to have her as my student.” – Laos Toohey
